I am taking an animation course and the instructor said that I should stop using templates and start drawing a lot of references without any guidelines or templates, because the drawing process for animation is different, he said I should start just drawing 3D shapes and memorize the proportions, what do you think?

He’s right.

templates arent even that great for illustration, being able to freehand into a beautiful sketch, then going over form and perspective is far superior. things shouldnt be perfect you need to adjust after.
>>
>>7985922
Yeah absolutely, that’s good advice for any 2D art not just animation
>>

Yeah that instructor knows what's up. Keep listening to them.

the same way westoids meme about copying bridgman twice, jp animation students have the meme of copying all of dennou coil's artbook

Your teacher is right, drawing for animation needs constructive drawing because it's closer to live action movies than painting.
You need to master drawing form, camera angles, acting, and so much more than just drawing from observation like fine art.
