>this used to be considered professional-quality art that a major game studio would actually publishStandards have gotten so much higher in the last 10-20 years it's crazy. To the point that it feels unfair
>>7988487she cute
>>7988487All anime looks like this to me.
>>7988487Back when the Japs actually had taste
>>7988495Retard.
>this used to be considered professional art that a game studio would actually publishstandards have gotten so much higher in the last 20-30 years it's crazy
>>7988502i mean 30-40 years, 1992 was more than 30 years ago now...
>>7988487That's better than 90% of anything published today
>>7988487CounterpointThis is one of the biggest manga soon to be mainstream anime right now
>>7988487Retarded take. This is just one asset among thousands of illustrations.
>>7988536Her eye is floating away back to its home planet
>>7988487if that silhouette had been designed today for a gacha game you would be dickriding
>>7988487to be fair they got Sugimori onboard back when they were a nothing burger studio looking for character designers in newspaper ads. Games weren't the huge AAA money sinks they're known for today back then and that was a good thing. a lot of the more "iconic" artists in vidya were usually brought in during the infancy of the company before they became powerhouses. I can't think of any big artists being brought on after the success of a ip/company.
>>7988546And i forgot to mention I don't think ken sugimori is a bad artist by any means. His drawings fit the style of the series in fact one could say his style MADE the series. Point is if you want a position similar to his your best bet is contributing to a promising indie project and sticking it through.
old pokemon art is mega soul, giga soul even.
>>7988557>>7988576Yeah I didn’t mean to insult Sugumori, I love his RBY era illustrations and his style is iconic. The OP pic just looked like the kind of thing that would make people say “needs loomis” on /ic/
>>7988487Easily recognizable designs even decades later? Yeah. Not everything has to be photorealism
>>7988533You really don't see the difference in skill between these two? It's actually so dramatic I'm not sure if this is a shitpost or not
>>7988487Back then Pokemon was basically an indie game, now it's the biggest game franchise in the world, it's made more money than Super Fucking Mario.
>>7988518It's better but it is not an over designed eye drug, complex Jeet rendering or ultra realistic slopYou just needed to be low int back then to be GMIAnd it all was ruined thanks to feminism and women flocking into the workplace, saturating every niche and market
>>7988583/ic/ is a bunch of no talent brown retards trying to tear down everything around them so they dont feel so worthless.
Once again, schizo /ic/ tries to shame on things they aren't able to replicate themselves.
>>7988487I miss when game art would look pencil drawn, even in game when they scanned it.
>>7988781What games are you thinking of? I don’t think anything on PS1 era hardware or earlier really looked “pencil drawn”, the technology was so limited that everything mostly had the same pixellated or low poly look in-game.It’s a shame that we have the technology now to actually makes games where the realtime graphics look like 80s/90s era illustrations but so few creators actually push the technology and experiment with different styles.
>>7988825portraits for many JRPGs, for one
>>7988828Oh are you thinking of like menu portraits? Yeah they looked great. Really a shame that games stopped doing that. Everything has to be homogenized now
>>7988502This likely took way more time and effort than AAA realismslop.Shit was legit better when games were made by 4 people with a $5K budget.
>>7988487well stylized combination of 3d objects, its good enough. they had like a million pokemon to make sprites for
>>7988487it looks better than modern game art though
>>7988502The bar has been raised due to accesibility
>>7989006>$5K$5k is $200k in today's economy
>>7989215I hate this look so much. Not really interested in the game, but even though the original xenoblade game had kinda ugly models, I hate the blandness of the new look even more.
>>7988502The PC-98 had such amazingly beautiful art. Feels like it wasn't as influential as it should have been on later styles
>>7988487>BRO WHY ISNT SHE COVERED IN MILLION MEANINGLESS GIZMOS>WHERE IS THE EFFORT I ONLY CONSOOOOOOOOM SOMETHING THAT TOOK EFFORT
>>7989215I feel like complexity in character design can work well when there are clear areas of non-complexity. Gacha designs that just throw on shit everywhere are awful though
>>7989293And $200K is 20% of just the marketing budget in modern aaaslop.Hollywood accounting already killed cinema and the music industry, now it's come for gaming.
>>7989726>anon has figured out just now that normies are shallow faggots who want to be constantly wowed and amazed at things they can't even begin to grasp to conceptualize the thought of comprehending due to their low intellect or because they cannot be bothered to know what they could not know
>>7988502>standards have gotten so much higher in the last 20-30 years it's crazyIts funny you say that but then nobody on this earth comes close to creating art like the old masters, let alone other masters that have since come and gone in our life times like the ones of old Disney and Tom and Jerry. Standards fluctuate over time. Other new area's are explored, masters come and go in those area's as well (Pixel art). Now we are in the AI slop age where it just tries to merge everything without "learning". >>7988533Comparing different mediums art that have different purposes is a sign of a /beg/.
>>7990358literally old good new bad the post.
>>7990358There's definitely plenty of people who beat the old masters. But they don't use the medium of the old masters. The industry moved on and now digital is where the best of the best are.In regards to traditional painting a look at ARC shows that there's still artists around that are on the level of the old masters - but the artist and leisure class is much smaller now... the average artist making at least a part time living off his art is definitely worse than the artist of the olden days.
>>7989215this, modern gacha slop design is so bad these daysthe simpler pokemon trainers still hold up today. none of the modern designs will stand the test of time.
