i had no idea that other people followed artists as living creators, rather than just sources of art for the old homework folder. unless an artist i follow keeps sperging out about politics in 75% of their artwork like jollyjack does on deviantart, or they got caught slopping, i really don't care what happens with the artists i commission or subscribe to.

>>
A few weeks ago, I asked my boss for Sundays off. He agreed, but due to his enthusiasm and the fact that some projects took longer than usual, I ended up working every day.
Recently, I’ve wanted to be stricter about this. However, in a recent email, he told me that he now has two jobs while working on his personal project. He even finds time to watch movies. He told me that he only sleeps four hours a night, even though he’s much older than I am.
Now, I feel guilty asking him for a day off. However, the truth is that I’m really sick of working on his illustrations and comics every day.

Had a weird moment yesterday when drawing in that I realized I have improved. For the first time in my life, I feel like if I can just tighten up my study methods a little more and work a little harder I can get even better this time next year. Not everything I do is total dogshit (or at least, not to the extent it was a few years ago). It's so freeing because I've spent most of my life thinking I was a giga Chris Chan tier retard who simply couldn't do it, turns out I just needed to lock in and apply myself.

>How do you power through the depression so that you can draw?
I don't.

Depression is the biggest talent killer. It's funny how nobody ever talks about this. You get all these guides about how to become a better artist including all kinds of techniques and philosophies, but you never see people mentioning the obvious. Probably it fits more into psychology not art, but still, depression is your biggest enemy as an artist. It also can fuel your creativity but you just don't benefit from it when you never feel like drawing.
>>
>>7992638
Some things which helped me tho (regardless of still being lazy as fuck) is reading philosophers.
Writers like Arthur Schopenhauer or Carl Gustav Jung can help you a bit to accept your depression more and become active regardless.
Carl Jung for example said that being lonely gives you authenticity and creativity. When you are always alone then the voices in your head just become so loud that you must do something to get rid of them.

Schopenhauer says that you have to actively fight against boredom because boredom is very dangerous. It's like the wet wall where depression can grow like fungus. And making art is a very good way to fight against boredom.

It's all still very difficult tho. At least for me it is. Because in the end you always still have to accept your sad reality and circumstances. There is not much you can do to change them.
>>
>>7992638
I don't power through anything. I just draw or do something else other than ruminate.
>>
>>7993382
>>7993493
It truly looks like one of the Gabe's characters, even a bit the style
>>
How do you cope with seeing talented artists who are way younger than you? I know all the platitudes like "focus on yourself", and I'm practising to stop being a /beg/, but it still stings. I feel like I could throw a rock and hit 9 of these little fuckers.
>>
>>7993615
I have bigger problems than some random guys being younger than me or being better at art than me.
I already know my life is a train wreck so little details like this don't really concern me that much.
>>
>>7993618
Pretty good way to think about life in general tbqh. There are people out there who are ACTUALLY suffering. If you’re not dying or being actively tortured by the cartel or some shit like that, well, be thankful for what you have. Your art problems are tiny in the grand scheme of things.
>>
>>7993615
just think of it as privilege instead of talent
>those kids can draw better than me because they have privilege
>when i was around those age, i dont have ipad with procreate or time alone so that i can draw in a /calm/ state inside my room for hours

Also, I hate getting the most inspiration and drive to draw when I'm about to go to bed, or it's late at night. Where's that shit when I'm energized and awake.

Been into femboys lately. I want to improve my anatomy, is there a book you recommend specifically for that niche or should I stuck to studying femboy artists?

I guess the only way out is to draw. Maybe I'll start drinking to help me actually get started in doing it
>>
>>7995352
Draw a girl, call it a boy. There's nothing more to it than that.
>>
>>7995359
Drinking just makes me more depressed. It actually made me sick too. Plus you can't really concentrate anymore while drunk so your drawings become shit.
>>
>>7995352
There isn't anything special about their anatomy, just study any decent anatomy book and try to apply what you learn to studies of artists you like
>>
>>7995352
As a professional femboy Conne sour draw a twink and call it a femboy people appreciate that more over the just draw a girl. The masculine features are a part of what makes them hot
>>
>>7995367
I need something to help calm my mind and get started though. Video games don't work as well anymore because they make me feel like a bum whenever I'm depressed and I usually end up spending more time playing them than I should

>>
>>7995371
>The masculine features are a part of what makes them hot
>masculine features
>femboy
>fem
Isn't the point of Femboys to deviate from masculine features. We're talking about Traps here right.
>>
>>7995384
Not him but I think that the point is a mix of masculine and feminine features, though people have different tastes on how those features are combined
>>
>>7995386
I guess, but having mixed features just makes the niche fall apart in my opinion. Men know what other Men look for and Femboys that make porn appeal to that which where the term "Traps are not Gay" stems from.
>>
>>7995394
which is where the term "Traps are not Gay" stems from*
>>
>>7995395
I think that idea fell apart when people had a visceral reaction to Bridget becoming a girl
>>
>>7995384
Its a mix what makes it hot is the androgyny the boy having feminine features while having masculine traits is part of the gap moe. Draw a girl and call it a boy can work though it just depends on how far you push those feminine features. Too feminine and you lose the appeal except to people who just like to get off to the femboy title than the femboy itself
>>
How do you build a following for commission work when you really dislike drawing popular shit? I dont care for the 5 recurring characters raven, bunny bitch from mha, etc?
>>
>>7995458
>How do you build a following for commission work when you really dislike drawing popular shit?
You don't. Either you draw furry slop or you are some rare genius. Otherwise there is no money in art.
>>
>>7995458
Find a niche fandom and draw art of it until you become known or draw a niche fetish until you become known
>>
>>7995384
>>7995440
Adding on I think the draw a girl call it a boy approach works best when its something like what yuruyakatou or etori yuuya does where they look like a girl at a glance but the longer you stare the clearer it is that its a boy. Despite the soft feminine feel of the body in the drawing you can still see some bit of subtle boyishness in the design. pre strive bridget has the same feel too

Animation production for cels too? Because that would be interesting to me.
>>
>>7995531
Presumably not?
I don't think there's any studio in the world still using handpainted cels, if that's what you meant.
>>
>>7995667
That sucks. Cel art always had a distinct look to it. The colors on cels are just so juicy. It's a bit like digital art but with actual real juicy colors.
>>
>>7995886
Digital animation could have juicy colours too if we took after effects away from post production teams. So much gets muted now because its just covered in bloom and post processing effects everywhere that strong colouring isn't incentivized and even when its done it gets washed out and smothered to death. They can't replicate the feeling of physical paint drying into paper but they can very much still have juicy colours today
>>
>>7995927
It's not the same kind of juicy. Digital will never be able to replicate the feel of real pigments.
Hell even real synthetic colors can't replicate the feel of real pigments. Synthetic colors just look more dull compared to real pigments.

>>7993813
We are not here to socialize after all.
Why would you?
>>
>>7997995
I found out about the artist beware site recently and it's astonishing how many artists leave their clients waiting for a year or more specifically due to moving. Like "moving" is 9/10 times the excuse. Why even give an excuse? Why not say earlier you can't do the commission and give them a refund, do they just hope the client eats the loss and never follows up? These artists aren't jeet scammers so I don't it.
>>
>>7998123
I'm assuming they are trying to hoard as many clients as possible and are sitting comfortably enough on a decent flow of income from other sources to passively reject their smaller clients because they'll still come back if they believe you're still "working" on their project, there are other reasons like being awful at time management but if they're not directly under pressure they'll not take it seriously. Popular artists can get away with some nonsense, but some of them take it to the extreme.
>>
>>7998123
I like how most client bewares are underage children stealing their parent's credit card for commissions and causing a chargeback when mom finds out
>>
>>7998162
I aim to take commissions in the future. How do I avoid dealing with bullshit like this? Are you expected to research every client if you don't want to get fucked over? Are these incidents exceptionally rare?
>>
>>7998123
>Why not say earlier you can't do the commission and give them a refund
The artist already spent the client's money on ubereats. Especially if it was "emergency commissions"
>>
>>7998123
Sometimes life just happens. Drawing is a bit of a mental thing and if you're not in the right frame of mind it can be hard to start or finish something to the standards you'd like. Some of them are definately lazy but its possible that a lot of them just get tied up in constant minor life stuff breaking their focus. If you work a job for example it can be hard to come back from work motivated to draw on top of other responsibilities you might have
>>
File: hqdefault.jpg (16 KB, 480x360)

>>7998302
If you're stringing someone along for over a year just cancel the order and refund. You can't tell a paying customer "Nah I don't feel like it" and just not do what they paid you for. Responding with rationalizations for the wait is even worse because they're almost always guilt-tripping to make the customer feel like the bad guy for asking. If your reasoning is you want it to be perfect/to a high standard, your art at its absolute best is still probably not worth waiting as long as you're making them wait.

If you only want to draw when motivated, keep it as a hobby and don't make it a job. In every other job you still need to do it when you're not motivated or have shitty mental health or being distracted by life. And even when you do get exemptions in other lines of work, you don't get an indefinite recovery period that ends at your own discretion. Stop stalling and draw the furry diaper hyperscat he paid 200 bucks for.

You can't get attached to the sketch. That's the most important part. As soon as you get attached to it because you think it looks nice and you don't want to ruin it, you become hesitant to refine it and finish the drawing.

Other methods which help are
>draw smaller, less ambitious stuff
>actually enjoy the process of finishing stuff
>color traditionally to enjoy the process more (helps for me at least, digital coloring is not very fun to me)
>work in layers so you don't get the fear of ruining the sketch
>develope an ADHD mindset when creating, you kind of need it to work faster and actually finish stuff
>learn to not give a shit and accept that art is never perfect
>do quick paintings
>actually finish stuff so you internalize that you can do it, then finishing stuff just becomes a habit
>>
>>7998920
>is there a secret global rule everyone knows except me that says nobody can talk to me?
Engagement is a form of currency, and ever since farmers began to monetize it other people treat viewcounts as such. The reason why you're not receiving feedback or any engagement back is because you are viewed as a vampire attack siphoning mindshare and attention away from them.

Your best bet is to join a niche group/cult that promotes the collective instead of the individual as the odds of engagement are much better.

I sort of get the idea, but how would that reflect on his girl in the mirror painting, as in actual examples? He said you wouldn't need to completely redo the painting.
I can only imagine making the shards of depressed doll version just tired in sort of a comical expression vs the dolled up fake image where she looks all happy mr.perfect girl with a fake grin.
I don't know but it made me think of how artists feel with just making misery porn and not giving a positive or fun spin, I don't think there's really something wrong with it, I've read manga that use that idea as their wheels. Other than not having a secondary idea to support the negative theme, it doesn't strike me as "wrong", but reflecting on that idea, this logic can apply to pretty much any kind of painting, so it doesn't feel somewhat shallow, a lot of drawing of a cute girl just being cute could fall under that category, I guess the reward of seeing something aesthetic with a skillful hand may be considered a reward on its own, so it's kind of a win.
But I don't know, a single illustration on its own can be so easily forgotten. I'd not like to dread over such things but there are amazing paintings in history that prove you could just take narrative seriously and put it all on a single canvas that it'd take you quite some time to ever finish it, but would that ever reflect on people caring about it? Does the success reflect its merits?

If they didn't follow back, they either
1. Don't like your art at all
2. Think your art is ok but want to make sure you actually like them before following back and based on how you described your replies, they know you don't and are just clout chasing
3. You post some crazy shit and they don't like your art enough to ignore it

3 is the least likely if you're complaining about not having followers because usually this type of schizo has a decent amount of followers, it's just that artists don't reply to them. Honestly if you only followed them after they liked your reply, it's very blatant you're clout chasing. Don't be a dumbass.

>>
Do you guys get this feeling that if you're able to get this piece just right, you'll get a breakthrough in your art?
>>
>>7998866
Not gonna try to pretend I know the real answer but brute forcing it is an awful way to go about it.
As for clarity in your situation distinguish the difference between burn out and fear by plainly asking yourself what's putting you in that spot, writing down some of your current grievances with how you're going about making your art and how you propose it'd feel smoother or less stressing. Then you can list other reasons that aren't directly related with art (time managament and other tasks taking up space, distractions, life getting in the way) applying that same logic.
All solutions should accomodate to what you're currently capable of doing, I am not of the belief of treating art as a workout, you can isolate certain skills and borrow some of that mindset if you want, but sidelining others aspects such as curiosity or creativity in spite of a lack of output sounds pretty myopic. If you want to do iterations, thumbnails, search for reference, doing deep dives on specific techniques or methods, you need a healthy amount of interest, it's not something some concept art instructor can squeeze out of you by simply shoving you in the "not grinding enough" lot.
Even with all this said, there will be times where you won't feel like drawing, don't guilt trip yourself into beliving this is some kind of abnormality, come back when you feel like drawing, even if it's a 2 minute shitty doodle, finding inspiration somewhere else will make you naturally come back and stay longer anyway.
Figure out what's really bothering you, then take some reasonable steps to get it off your way so you can actually enjoy drawing, even if it's a 5% improvement, it's worth the effort.

My dad’s getting a reconstructive surgery for his face tomorrow (got cancer cut out of his face last year). I asked off at the beginning of the month so I could be there for emotional support and shit.
I work at a small business, we don't really require a 2 weeks notice or anything like and my co workers that full advantage of that. These bitches are constantly taking off and leaving work early with little to no notice. In spite of this I asked off and marked off on the calendar in advance. Lo and behold my fucking co worker decided last minute to take a 10 day long family camping trip even though I had already asked off one fucking day for my dad’s surgery. We have very limited staff so both us being out is a big deal. She’s already taken so much time off work for trips, meanwhile I’ve only asked for one other day off this year (my birthday). She suggested I work tomorrow anyway and wish my dad good luck from work. And she was talking about how much she didn’t want to go on this trip and how stressful it is for her. As she was leaving work early today for the trip (I had come in even though it was my off day) my other co worker was wishing her farewell, saying “It sucks that your family is making you go on this trip, try and have fun anyway!” Or some fucking bs about how rough it is for her to go to a fucking camping trip.
I’ll keep her in my thoughts and prays tomorrow from the hospital waiting room. God I need a new job.

Some of the libraries around me are old and large enough to have a decent selection of art books. I go there sometimes and flip through some, occasionally taking photos or notes of things I want to remember. Also, 90% of the children's illustrated section will be dire. But the remaining 10% will be quite marvelous. Maybe take a bit of time searching rather than drawing.

Mostly, I draw for family members-- Christmas, birthdays, whatever. Nobody needs me to buy them a toaster or phone charger. Holiday cards are pretty good, too. You get to send a bunch of people your own work. Stickers work, too.

i can't decide between having a dead twitter that i only post art on occasionally, or actually using twitter but (a) annoying the 20 people who followed me for art by posting other stuff, or (b) annoying the people who followed me for other stuff by occasionally flashbanging them with bad anime art.
either way i wouldn't post enough to justify having 2 accounts.

I always felt like talking to myself on twitter. I think it's best to just post art and that's it. Unless you already have some kind of community there, then there also isn't really a reason to post your thoughts there.

Maybe I should go to some kind of art class
>>
>>8002760
I wouldn't expect too much much from art schools. It's not rare that artists who went to art school completely forget what they learned there. The most important thing is that you try to fogure things out yourself. Also with the internet you don't even need art school anymore. You can find better teachers online.
>>
>>8002747
doesn't matter
post whatever you want
>>8002760
that's also an option
the problem with anonymous feedback is that it's often unqualified or simply doesn't align with what you want to do with your art
so the best it can do is stay generic (i.e. learn perspective, construction, values, anatomy, etc)

I'm trying to paint bell pepper and it's kicking my ass. I only did preliminary drawing and already struggling to put all the reflected light in shadows in all these bumps. And it's only one of 11 more paintings I have to do. Also my back hurts and sun keep sneaking in and ruining my light.

I've gotten so little critique or feedback on my art I'm genuinely considering sending it to some chatbot and trying to get some comments from there..
Has anyone tried that?

I generally like my art but it's got zero reach. other artist in disc seem to like it, and so do anons on other boards, but no one sees my stuff on SNS.

Yeh, it can be fun, especially if you combine it with normal digital art.
Pure prompting is kinda limited, so tard wrangling with drawing helps a lot.
But sometimes I just prompt whatever monster girl strikes my fancy.
And sometimes I draw trad too.

drawing is like going to work and then at the end of your shift, your boss flips a coin to decide if you will get paid for that day.
>>
Wait...maybe it's good that I'm hyperfocusing on my art all day, but I need to focus on technical and aesthetic problems and not existential artist woes
>>

No. I don't express my ideas through words. I just draw them. Trying to express an idea in words for a dumb machine to interpret and gacharoll an image is a completely alien concept to me.

>Be diagnosed with ADHD but never told about it
>Develop bipolar disorder but not realize it for years until my issues got so blatantly bad that it caused me to lose my job
>Even after treatment with lithium which largely reduced the mood changes, still afflicted with near constant brain fog and what I thought was depression
>These episodes are so bad that driving is legitimately dangerous, often try to leave to work and have to turn around and go home for fear that I'll get in an accident
>Ataxia, slurred speech, horrible depression, can't think, on some days I can't do anything but lay in bed and scroll youtube because literally everything else, even vidya, is a monumental effort
>even arthritic symptoms and muscle pain that gets worse and worse over time to the point that I have to stop and get out of the car on long drives because it's too painful to keep driving
>Realize that these episodes tend to hit after eating and that I feel better on days when I don't eat
>it's gluten
>gluten causing an inflammation response that's severely affecting both body and mind
>God only knows how long I've had it and what damage it's done to my brain, for all I know it could be responsible for my ADHD in the first place, or at the very least made it worse
>Even after learning that, still spend almost literal months in the same state because gluten is in almost everything, mostly because of yeast extract, and every time I screwed up by not meticulously scouring the ingredients of every single thing I ate it was guaranteed to be nearly two days of straight misery, meaning that I could lose almost an entire week just by eating the wrong thing on two days of it
>only just now managed to get through (almost) an entire month without gluten contact
>tl;dr my life has been ruined by three layers of life altering health conditions with all their powers combined to fuck my shit up as thoroughly as possible
As you might imagine, this isn't very conducive to drawing :)
I'm so tired, family.

I think I'm in a similar boat. Sometime I wonder how different my life would be if I didn't live in a country that views mental health as american nonsense or white people shit. I feel like I'm going to live being forever forced to tough it out. The worst part is how people treat it as if you don't care or aren't trying or lazy. Or that your mood swings or depression is just you being rude or unreasonable

The porn I draw tends to give equal attention to male and female characters. I generally draw fairly generic male characters so that others can relate to them. However, I often wonder if I should create characters of other races for people who aren’t white. I’ve considered creating multiple versions of the same image with different protagonists, as well as trying my hand at video games and allowing users to create their own avatars.
In the end, I often ignore all of this because I don’t have much time to draw. Perhaps I should stop overthinking and just draw whatever works best for the illustration.

Any anons here also paint minis? My airbrush spray booth is now in my PC room. Even though I have a ventilation booth, I'm wondering if I should cover my screen tablet with a towel or something just in case to avoid any fine mist getting on it

struggling after almost a month of only getting crabbed or getting no (You)s. when i get crit it's always the same guy telling my the same things repeatedly whoch stresses me out because i can't fix the things he wants to me to fix.

maybe i should just learn and practice for an entire year before trying to seek feedback again. i don't feel like posting every day when i improve like maybe 0.1% per drawing is helpful nor does anyone enjoy seeing my art.
>>
>>8005163
you may want to take notes on what categories of fundies people tell you to work on, work on one of them for 2-4 weeks via studies and sketched applications, then ask for feedback specifically for what you studied.
try not to get stressed. you can't wholly "fix" your own art, just make it better than the last time you attempted it.

Ask that guy or someone else to show you an example of what the fix looks like? Like ask them to redline your drawing. It might sound cheeky, but you also might find a kind soul who’s willing to help you
