How do you master shading?

>>7992410>2 hour videoTL;DR?
>>79924361. Separate light from shadow + Do terminator studies2. Understand light modeling factors - Form Light - Form Shadow - Cast Shadow - Terminator - Highlight - Center Light - Core Shadow - Reflected Light - Halftones - Ambient Light - Ambient Occlusion - Penumbra + Do Modfac Hunting3. Develop Value Control + Value Scale + Value Gradient + Value Couplets4. Organize Values (5 Groups Max) + Do Value Studies5. Understand Common Mistakes - Reflected light too bright - Light halftones too dark - Dark halftones too bright - Missing ambient occlusion + Render the perfect egg6. Shading = Subject + Environment - Reflection - Shading + Paint light probes7. The 1-2-3 Read + Deconstruct into cubes8. Halfway to black + Paint the halfway to black worm9. Create your own reference + Dp a maquette10. Make something you care about + Work on a meaningful project
>>7992400You can get very soft and complex gradations by just starting very very light and slowly building up layers of graphite in the desired areas. No blending or smudging required. You just kind of lightly “scribble” wherever you need to make it darker and work up slowly. This is assuming you’re doing trad of course.
>>7992400Try working on neutral paper with both a dark pencil and a white pencil. It's relatively easy to identify the two extremes in a subject and apply them. (As opposed to working in darks alone and leaving the lightest parts of the drawing untouched.) Working this way will often produce something that pops from the page satisfyingly. You can then practice working towards the midtones from either end. Also, while you're learning, it's super helpful to reduce your reference image[s] to four color grayscale images. (Especially if you're working from something colorful, like a photo of a flower in the sun.) This will help you see and group equivalent values in a subject. (i.e., the side of this house should be equally as bright as the surface of this puddle in the road.) Keep using the original reference, too. The grayscale version is an additional guide.
>>7992520>four color grayscale imagesI should have said "four-color".
>>7992400Drawing from life
>>7992520I don't have a reference. I'm constructing corinthian pillars purely on a geometric basis as the OP shows.
>>7992653Imagine getting out of your own fucking way for a moment. If you're looking for specific information, you could, and I know this is a wild fucking stretch, phrase your question such that people might have some fucking clue what you actually want to know. Are you interested in knowing what parts of your own particular constructed Corinthian column and darkest? Are you instead interested in the mechanics of producing value x with a pencil?Would you be interested to know that photographs of very similar columns subject to various light sources exist? (Granted, they tend to be holding large opaque things up.)

>>7992400>shadingits called rendering. start from beginning and go learn to read retard.
>>7992662There is no reason for you to cuss at me. I am just asking a question. If you want to be cruel you can just leave the thread. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.>>7992669What is this?
>>7992685look at the image and use your brain, retard
stuff that ive learnt- a composition of 20% light, 30% shadow and 50% midtones is appealing- start with 3 values then transition to push to 5. compress shadows to ~6-8 (9 for black), and keep 0-5~ for light and midtones. i group them like v1 = 9, v2 = shadows/~7-8, v3 = midtones/4-6~, v4 = light/0-2.- you can ignore reflected light and tiny shadows, at least for most of the drawing. focus on big bold statements of value. squinting helps a lot here to observe the big shadow shapes.- be careful of simultaneous contrast!
>>7992688>contextless image>cussing at other people accusing them of being mentally deficientYou're a real piece of work.
>>7992726Thanks! Actual useful advice.
>>7992734the context is rendering, retardif you have a percent brightness and angle of inclination, what do you think the image is telling you, retard?
>>7992748Stop calling me the r word when it clearly applies to you more.
>>7992400Grind those hatching value scale thing. To train your technique and eye.
>>7992774come on, retard, your post about constructing pillars on a geometric basis, in your thread about rendering gets a reply with scales of inclination and percentage of brightness, what does it mean? you can do this, retard, I believe in you
>>7992780Please stop. I didn't say anything mean to you.
>>7992788come on, retard, believe in yourselfwhat is the correlation between angles of inclination and percentage of brightness in the context of rendering geometry?
>>7992400Did you draw this, anon? This is very nice
>>7992804The Pearson correlation is roughly -0.88. Why are you treating me like this? I didn't do anything wrong to you.
>>7992821holy fuck, you're an actual fucking retardkill yourself, I don't even know why bothered trying to help a fucking mongoloid
>>7992819Yes I drew it. Was bored at work. That was my second attempt. Here's the first attempt (this one is bad I know).I am working on a third more polished one this weekend. I'll put it in the next post. The one this weekend is a full-length column and I want to do a zoom in on the capital next to it.
>>7992826Here is what I have so far this weekend, so attempt #3 I guess. Plenty of blank space for a zoom in on the capital.>>7992825That is so cruel. What if I was actually suicidal? Do you ever think about that before you say such cruel things?
>>7992826The ones on graph paper were done with a straight edge and some calculations of angles from the graph paper itself. >>7992828This one was done with a straight edge, compass, and protractor.
Here's the full column, with my attempt at shading. I may try to do the capital zoom tomorrow. Tired now
>>7992685You are a genuinely frustrating person.Nonetheless, I regret going off on you.
>>7993108No worries, anon, I was being deliberately obtuse to get a rise out of you.
>>7992975Still haven't gotten around to the rest of this since I've been working on the farm. But if anyone can offer a critique of what I have so far I'd appreciate it. Some of my geometry was off when I measured the angles of the circles for the column, so I know that needs work. But please critique the shading.
>>7994266I'm new to this so treat me like a babby.
>>7994268Bump. I made some progress but I don't know the geometric rule for the construction of volutes of Corinthian columns. I found a resource for Ionic volutes, but that doesn't do me much good. I have some plates from Diderot's Encyclopedie, but they don't seem to cover it. AI isn't being helpful and google searches are turning up Ionic volutes and other irrelevant stuff.Anybody have recommendations?
