soul vs souless
Raima is such a dissapointment, why do so many webcomic artists just make incoherant bad shonen ripoffs. Their western comic artists trying to imitate a medium they dont understand. How much better would it be if it was about something the writer understood and cared about. Its so incoherent, theres nothing human or real in it. It'd be better if he told some story in france, and then just makes some of the woman tall and buff just cause. Maybe I should write a story about a socially awkward 9 foot tall buff woman...
>>7993991Golden Smurf was always a fag, so it's not surprised the shit he makes sucks>Maybe I should write a story about a socially awkward 9 foot tall buff woman...Do it, faggot
>>7993984the one on the right is an improvement
>>7993991>why do so many webcomic artists just make incoherant bad shonen ripoffs.Because all they understand is engagement farming on Twitter, the peak of creativity for their mindset is either overdesigned OCs or "hype moments and aura." Pre social media it was understood a writer or artist could take months or even years to build the structure for their story or world before they publish, but when a big titty demon waifu sketch and lore dump does numbers idiots think they can skip workshopping an actual foundation.
>>7993991I think there was potential for them to become actually good but they were still immature and didn't get a chance to develop before getting dealt a fatal reputational blow during the laugh-at-cringe era of the internet, and basically everyone stopped making them.
>>7994414cont, it's pretty clear that webcomics were largely inspired by 80's and 90's anime, things like pic related, Outlaw Star. But the inspiration only led to surface level imitations, and not very good imitations at that. They copied the brightly colored hair, big eyes, wacky expressions, and oversexualised women.
>>7994427But they never paid closer attention. They never learned any good storytelling, or how to actually draw well. Their works remained totally amateurish throughout. In their defence, they had basically no learning resources back then, especially not for anime style. I think webcomics had survived a few more years they would have eventually gotten good. But nowadays nobody wants to make a webcomic because it's synonymous with lame.
>>7994430Shortcuts and other efficiency increasing techniques are important in making a comic... but webcomics latched onto too many corner cutting habits too quickly before learning how to actually draw, and it totally handicapped them.Looking at this pic, there's no attention given to the lighting. The characters have a model sheet which dictates their colors in all situations. The very anime that inspired most of these webcomics didn't do this, their colors varied dynamically as the scene demanded. And many other crutches like stiff compositions that featured characters 3/4 view standing still in the middle of the panel.Overly thick lines that are easier to draw than thin lines, but which hinder any sense of realism.Total laziness towards backgrounds, either omitting them entirely or drawing htem simplified, or using photos. But perhaps the worst of all is that they all had no structure to their storytelling. They either got abandoned halfway through, or the story totally changed and characters became either fetishes of the author, or political commentary. At no point did it ever feel like an interesting world was made with living breathing characters.
>>7994438I think a big cause was the lack of professional environment for these webcomic artists. Pretty much all of them were just young nerds doing it for fun, maybe they had a donation link on their website or sold some stuff at conventions. But it's nothing compared to the crucible that is manga serialization. If they were a manga artist, they would have be working flat out 10 hours a day, and dropping the quality wasn't an option because poor sales figures meant quick cancellation. It's boom or bust. But these webcomic artists weren't under any such pressure. Basically all of them quit out of boredom, and they had the freedom to do that. But even when they didn't quit, they had a very casual attitude towards their webcomic. They didn't see it as a serious project they were creating that had a definitive finish point. They viewed it as a habit, just a thing they do regularly. You don't say "I'm building a house as a habit", you say "I'm building a house and I hope it will be done soon". One is intense, goal driven, while the other is laid back and directionless.
>>7994441The only thing that webcomics have going for them is soul. Which is nice to have, but if it comes at the expense of being total amatuer hour, was it really worth it?
Raima would be far more enjoyable if Smurf actually released pages consistently instead of fleeing to his autism cave and just coming back with 60 pages at once whenever the fuck he feels like it.I don't know how much he stole from Berserk but he surely took the ability to make me forget it even exists 363 days a year, I see him draw his OCs and I just think they're from some gacha I didn't play
>>7994565Drawing comics takes a hell of a lot of time, especially when it's up to your own self to crack the whip.Doesn't help that this retard decided to drawn in this inefficient, over-rendered style.t. currently stuck the same traps
>>7994565>I don't know how much he stole from BerserkSome panels look straight up traced but I don't care enough to compare them in depth
>>7993991>implying the comic wasn't just an excuse to sell porn on patreoncome on what are we doing here?
>>7994624I know, when you look at other webcomics everyone does a page a week so with the occasional break that's also 50 a year, give or take, I'm just saying he should consider dropping them 3 or so at a time to keep people interested. Unless he has the shittiest workflow in existence there's no way he never has a few pages sitting on his hard drive for months he could just post instead. It's a somewhat competently drawn webcomic with tits and violence on every other page, I feel like it could be way more popular that it currently is and it's more of a marketing issue than tracing Berserk, looking like AI or whatever.
>>7995259If anything it's more popular than it should be. It just isn't a very compelling reading experience. I don't say this to shit on the guy or anything, just my opinion having checked it out more than once. That fact that you or I are even talking about it now is way more than works of this quality tend to get.But anyway, it's clear he spends a fair amount of time not even drawing it, instead working on the coom and fanart people here are talking about.
>>7993984you know it's shit when the artist is publicly advertising their paysite within every page of the work itself
>>7994430>Miss Dynamitewhat a fucking throwback
>>7993984Is the artist on the left Phil Foglio?
>>7993984I like Smurf's style. That's part of what made me like Ramia. I also like strong ladies with abs. That is also what helped. His manga is dumb fun but I think he dropped it.
>>7993984>>7994427>>7994430Did or does stuff like this ever get picked up by publishers? Maybe the western comic scene wouldn't be so dead if stuff got picked up like in the east instead of the constant big IP cannibalization.
>>7995495In the east stuff doesn't "get picked up". A prospective author approaches the publisher (sometimes an editor approaches them) and they start from scratch on an idea.
>>7995495The middle one is Outlaw Star
