/beg/ here, normally I only post alcohol marker + colored pencil weeb art in /beg/, but yesterday I was possessed by the idea to make red ochre pigment like the cave painters of old and make my silly little anime art with it, maybe on wooden blocks. Today I found some nice rocks, and spent a whole two hours grinding just one of them down to this amount. What's next? I tried applying more beige powder to a wooden block with just water and a brush yesterday, it changed the color a little bit but was very flakey. I have an order of gum arabic coming in a few days, anything else I need? I heard I might need gesso too?

>>7995626The finer the grind, the better the color. you also want to levitate the pigment if you haven't already. You technically only need gum arabic and water as far as ingredients go, some people add clove oil to stave off fungus. You almost certainly want to add honey, glycerin or other humectant because earth pigments dry into clay and will be a bitch to rewet otherwise. I'm fairly sure you could apply the paint directly to wood if you don't dilute it too much, it should be very opaque and stick well, gesso is more for washes and to get a lighter ground. You can also skip the gum arabic and paint using egg yolk for wood or whites for paper, then you'd want gesso for wood

You'll also need to seriously mull it to make paint in the first place, it's not something you want to do while painting

Orthodox icons are still painted with egg tempera on wood and hang in every home.
