Ah okay, if it helps one live as an artist it's fine.
Recently got myself tangled up in an art market with my plein air paintings. One thing I quickly learned is that people don't really look at your work as you do, they just want to see things they recognise and hear stories about the painting.

Hey anons some of my Liquitex and Daler Rowney acrylic ink jar caps have a weird "bounce" when I twist them and they come loose even if turning them in the tightening direction.

What are the thread sizes of Liquitex and daler rowney acrylic ink jars so I can get replacements off amazon or aliexpres?

Speaking of aliexpress what brushes do you buy from there that actually are good? I'm looking for round tip brushes and line rigger brushes.

/beg/ here, normally I only post alcohol marker + colored pencil weeb art in /beg/, but yesterday I was possessed by the idea to make red ochre pigment like the cave painters of old and make my silly little anime art with it, maybe on wooden blocks.
Today I found some nice rocks, and spent a whole two hours grinding just one of them down to this amount. What's next? I tried applying more beige powder to a wooden block with just water and a brush yesterday, it changed the color a little bit but was very flakey. I have an order of gum arabic coming in a few days, anything else I need? I heard I might need gesso too?
>>

>>7995612
im posting from nz. art markets still exist in countries without jews.
>>
>nz
>without jews
>>
>>7995626
what kind of paint/marker are you trying to make? pigment needs a binder, which one you use determines the product
gum arabic = watercolour
egg = tempera
casein = casein
oil = oil
wax = crayon / coloured pencil
gum taragacanth = soft pastel
if you want the natural colour of the wood to show through priming it with clear gesso / gac 100 / pva will work for most of these. not sure about water colour though
>>
>>7995626
The finer the grind, the better the color. you also want to levitate the pigment if you haven't already. You technically only need gum arabic and water as far as ingredients go, some people add clove oil to stave off fungus. You almost certainly want to add honey, glycerin or other humectant because earth pigments dry into clay and will be a bitch to rewet otherwise. I'm fairly sure you could apply the paint directly to wood if you don't dilute it too much, it should be very opaque and stick well, gesso is more for washes and to get a lighter ground. You can also skip the gum arabic and paint using egg yolk for wood or whites for paper, then you'd want gesso for wood
>>
>>7995638
>levitate
*levigate
>>
>>7995626
Oil and Egg tempera is suited for painting on wood. Gesso is recommended but not necessary.

>what kind of paint/marker are you trying to make?
I'm /beg/ and am unfamiliar with most of these. I went with gum arabic since I have been curious about watercolor already (I have a set of watercolor pencils I've been meaning to practice with), but do they still work on a wooden surface as opposed to paper? The idea of making pastels or even pencils does appeal to me a lot, I already do a lot with colored pencils.
What I'm hoping to do here is still a bit hazy and open to change, but basically I'm hoping to make something primarily black (Ohuhu fineliner for now, homemade black pigment in the future?) and 'white' (uncolored wood), plus some splashes of red ochre color, going for a minimal color scheme. I'm hoping for the result to feel prehistoric (matching the prehistoric theme of the art), so if it looks like a cave painting, that's what I'm going for.
>>7995638
Right now it's a powder in a jar on my shelf, along with the rocks I haven't processed yet. I'll levigate them tomorrow.
Sorry if I misread, but are you suggesting I store it in liquid form + clove oil and honey to keep it from drying? My thought was that if I picked gum arabic, the red ochre would be stored in powder form, then I'd take the amount I need for a given project and mix it with the water + gum arabic at that time.
>>7995644
I was considering egg tempera but was concerned that the egg yolk paint would smell after a while, especially since I live in a very humid place. Is that wrong?
My fantasy is that I could refine these and sell them at like Comiket someday, so I wouldn't want it to smell.

No, you're thinking of tempera (egg yolk/white), gum arabic and pigment is literally watercolor, it's infinitely rewetable, there's absolutely no reason not to store finished paint, you just need a humectant if you want to dry it because earth pigments are stupidly thirsty and you'd basically be mulling the paint again if you reconstitute a pure gum arabic ochre. You'll also need to seriously mull it to make paint in the first place, it's not something you want to do while painting
>>
>>7995574
ncie to know i thought it was a paint thinner mostly which also happened to dry quick, though im sure it´s somewhat of one too

my bad. i almost forgot jews are always secretly pulling the strings.
do you think the jews at these wef conferences, which some of our politicians have occasionally attended, really care about the nz art market? if they do, what have they done to it? dealer galleries are privately owned businesses, they dont rely on government funding.

I think literally every wood panel painting and probably 90% of manuscripts until like late 1300s were made with yolks or whites as binder (tempera/glaire). Orthodox icons are still painted with egg tempera on wood and hang in every home.

I see. I think I might try both egg tempera and gum arabic then, see which one feels right on the wood. Not that I'm going for 100% historical reproduction here but they both seem authentic to the time period I'm interested in.
>>7995698
>>7995703
I wasn't considering selling the paint, but that wouldn't be a bad idea. It depends on which convention, but at Comiket you can find all sorts of enthusiasts selling all manner of things, including a lot of crafts, so it wouldn't be out of the norm.
In which case it would be the homemade watercolors, of course.
I don't know if they would let me sell rocks I found and just ground up though, a bit more processing might be necessary.

Idiotic statement, egg tempera is factually more lightfast than oil, you've probably seen plenty of tempera paintings you assumed were oils, no shit monks and medieval artists weren't as good as post-renaissance masters. The hatching capacity alone makes egg tempera amazing.

>>
>>7995721
it’s more lightfast historically but they are probably pretty even now
we underestimate how trash and poorly regulated pigments were historically.
i highly doubt oils from old holland or blockx are less lightfast than same pigments with egg tempera
>>
>>7995729
Lightfastness has more to do with the pigment than the medium. Vermillion never fades, but it can darken in watercolor, but the oil prevents it from interacting with atmospheric gases any more than is necessary for the oil to cure. Rhetorical downside of oil is that it becomes progressively more brittle over time

>>
>>7995729

Gross, dude

Wrong, it has a lot to do with the medium because it changes the amount radiation the pigment is exposed to, that's why opaque mediums fade more, the pigment is naked

What's the /trad/ stance on limited palettes? The way people talk on the internet makes me feel like a hack if I use a full palette
>>
>>7997441
This is always going to be personal.
I prefer a limited palette, with 4-6 colours, it can help make your painting look more harmonious and by using the same few colours you learn exactly what you can mix and how to solve colour problems within your choice of pigments.
I don't think you necessarily need to use a limited palette, I personally like to explore the limitations. But depending on what you want out of painting it's perfectly valid to go with a palette of many different colours.
>>
>>7997441
I'm a poor fag so limited palette sounds great to me
Also could be a good way to define your style and become more recognizable
>>
>>7997537
>I'm a poor fag so limited palette sounds great to me
until you realize you're mixing the cheapest, most lightfast pigment colors with your expensive primaries
>>
>>7997567
>Lightfastness is a property of a colourant such as dye or pigment that describes its resistance to fading when exposed to light.[1][2][3]
What's wrong with lightfast pigment ?
>>
>>7997747
no, I'm saying you're replacing readily available cheap, lightfast pigments with more expensive primaries
eg nuzorn generally uses cad red instead of vermillion, so instead of a cheap and lightfast light red, burnt umber, burnt sienna etc, you're using cad red so the same painting costs more money to paint even if you skip paying for more tubes
>>
>>7997784
cad red and vermillion aren't exactly interchangeable

>>
>>7997784
A limited palette can limit the color gamut or the paint tubes.
Nearly all earth colors are within the Zorn palette color gamut. Some earth are very expensive, but let say you build a palette out of affordable earth paints: Ochre, Burned Umber, Raw Umber, Mars Black, Siena, Burned Siena, English Red maybe transparent iron oxides... Its a lot of paint tubes, but the gamut is very limited. Than you add cad red, but you use it only as an accent for high saturation, your main red is English red for example. It's cheap, you have more options regarding transparency, but it's a lot of paint tubes to manage.
A Zorn palette is only 4 tubes. Way more limited in therms of texture, opacity etc but fery simple and not that expensive. Becosu most of the paint you use is not cad. You use much more ochre and white red. It depends on your subjects (most of the time Zorn is used for people, so a lot of skin, hair, and nutral backgrounds) but i would say if you use Zorn for a long time the ratio will be like 5-5 parts white, 4 parts ochre, 1 part black and 0.5-1 parts cad red. So every liter of white you would only use 50-100g tube of cad (if its premium).
Not that bad really, makes sense for a lot of people.

What's way worse are primary limitted palettes. When you have very strong, pure, expensive primary colors and you mix them together to produce a bigger amount of greyish color. Like you need a big amount of purple-grey, so you mix cad red and cobald blue, both very expensive. Many of those are against black pigments as well, so they mix chromatic blacks... Those are stupid and expensive, Zorn is fine.

nigger are you suggesting vermillion and modern vermillion hue are identical? genuine vermillion which you probably don't even own is more expenjive than cad
when you only have three pigments and white, the shade of those pigments matters a lot. cad is much more neutral red, vermillion hue skews warm
also cad red is the most high tint pigment ive used besides prussian blue and pthalo green, you need barely any for most situations when you are painting portraits or landscapes

you have 3 pigments and white with zorn. therefore the characteristics of each matters A LOT
you can't subsistute naples red or whatever dogshit without adversely affecting the whole palette especially for flesh tones

then why is your insane schizo ass arguing about something we both agree on

i'm responding to the post i quoted whinging about the price of cad red
>>
>>7998028
no you dumb latamonkey, I never "whinged" about the price, I informed someone saying he's poor so a limited palette appeals to him that a limited palette costs more per painting because you're using expensive pigments to mix browns instead of having a couple extra tubes of earth pigments
I literally gave the example of having to use cadmium to mix a burnt sienna instead of just having a burnt sienna on the palette
using more cadmium = spending more money, ergo limited palettes aren't cheaper

yeah good thinking bro that's a real great addition to the zorn palette. when he is mixing colors he can mix them normally with cad and ult blue to make tones

I tried to avoid black and only mix red and blue to create shadows. Did I just mix too many colors until it became mud or something? Here's another photo.
>>
>>7998955
>I tried to avoid black and only mix red and blue to create shadows
You wasted paint. Mixing black with red and blue does not make it colorful, its one of retarded boomer truisms, its magical thinking, like if the black mixture remembers being colorful in the past.
If you want your shadows more colorful, you have to mix more tones. Chromatic black does nothing but makes mixing harder, normal black is more predictable in mixes.
>>
You could achieve some colorful effects, by working in layers. You put a layer of red, you let it dry, you put blue on top, it would look black but in strong sunlight you may be able to see some shimmering effects.
Chromatic black does nothing.

I also like just drawing with graphite and smudging tho. Or coloring with Copics. Coloring digitally is also fun. I also could imagine going back to pastels and watercolor pencils again. I also like just inking my drawings. I also still have ideas for manga I want to draw. I don't really like limiting myself to 1 thing.

I'm mostly a digitalfag but I find traditional superior because it's tangible, you can touch it, it changes depending on lighting conditions etc. You could create the greatest digital painting in the world and the average viewer would assume you painted over a photo or used other similar tools. A good oil painting can't be faked. You mixed those colors, you put down those brushstrokes.
>>
>>8001407
>the average viewer would assume you painted over a photo or used other similar tools
Are you saying you can't trace in trad? Even the old masters already used tracing methods.
There are definitely ways to make painting in trad easier too. You could for example print out a photo and just paint over it.

when you finish a trad painting you have a permanent (50-100 years at least) physical object to decorate an interior space, which can theoretically be sold for hundreds of dollars or more if it's not shit
even brian is able to make a living with his truly awful paintings
when you finish a digital painting, you have a file that can be copy pasted infinitely that no one will pay for unless it's commission, and those people are being destroyed by generative AI
i'm not saying AI will never paint trad paintings but i think it's such an edge use case that it will take a long time before they make it to market

Is there any way to make white/pinkish skin color glazes with grisaille with acrylics?

I tried mixing it with transparent mixing white, but then the color just turned out transparent and was barely visible on paper.
Then I tried mixing it with a lot of titan white and it obviously became very opaque. I managed to still make underlying shadows somewhat visible by tilting the canvas and letting the water flow into the highlight, but then there was a puddle in the highlight which just didn't want to dry. And the shadow obviously also was pretty bright then (still visibel tho).

Should I just use this titan white mix as a highlight color?
Or could I maybe mix it with medium and make it more transparent while still keeping the saturation?

Color mixing is pretty complicated, especially when you just prefer white skin over brownish skin and use grisaille technique on top of it.
>>
>>8001772
GRISAILLE IS A MEME
I swear this shit is propagated solely by digifags latching onto any old painty word to give their pixel pushing some semblance of street cred, and it's not even a good technique in digital either.
Like it literally means grey, what the fuck do you think it does to color?
And no, grisaille =/= underpainting
>>

You also could call it Sfumato. That's how it first was called I think. Davinci also used grey underpaintings.

You can't compare them because one of them is a master and the other isn't even in the top tier of commercial painters. You gonna post that Sorayama flesh tone now or just keep coping how grisuck totally isn't shit for color and you just need to le brush le highlights lmoa

Sorayama is a master too. He just paints his pictures in 3 days and works fast.
>You gonna post that Sorayama flesh tone
I never said he has such a flesh tone. I just said he makes it look good anyway. His technique involves a lot of paint erasing for highlight areas, that's probably why he never painted really white/pinkish flesh tones for the highlights because you cant erase opaque color that well.

His taste in women is generally not really my thing anyway. They are too masculine for me. He still can paint masterfully tho.

I HAVE TO ROTATE THE DIRECTION OF EACH STROKE OR I WILL RAPE THE BRUSHES HOW IS THAT VIABLE SPECIALLY FOR SMALL AREAS OR NOT EVEN THAT SMALL BUT MEDIUM AREAS

I SHOULD HAVE GET A FILIBUSTER IN SMALL AND MEDIUM NOT A BUNCH OF SMALL AND MEDIUM BRISTLE BRUSHES BRUHHH

I THINK BRISTLY BRUSHES ARE FOR THOSE NIGGERS THAT USE IMPASTO TECHNIQUE AND TEXTURES THERE S NO WAY THESE ARE VIABLE I ALSO HAVE TO QUADRUPLE HOW MUCH PAINT I USE AHHHHH

BUT ITS NOT THAT BAD MAYBE I DONT KNOW MAYBE I DONT KNOW MAYBE MAYBE IT FORCES BETTER FUNDAMENTALS BECAUSE OF IT BEING HIGHLY DIRECTIONAL MAKES EACH STROKE MORE PURPOSEFUL THEN BEATING AROUND THE BUSH WITH A SYNTHETINC SWIRLING AROUNFD

AHAHHHHAHHH

This general is really gay. You would expect trad artists have a bit more class than the average digitalfag but this general is even worse than the others.

The spamming jeet uses acrylics, he just evidently lobotomized himself via redditslop chatbots filtered through his ESL comprehension of English.
You can plug literally any retarded nopaint theorycrafting brainfart into the brainrot machine and it will tell you you're a genius using a master technique
>>
I don't get it, is the monkey using bristle brushes for acrylics or what?

Neat, I was reading through the article, it's very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
>>
I wasn't trying to be le rude with the bristly thing still getting used to it but I think maybe synthetics are better for me but I do like how they forced more mindful painting decisions

any suggestions for a simple desktop easel? as long as it can fit A4 paper that's fine. ideally lightweight and not a piece of shit from amazon
found this on etsy which looks perfect but it doesn't ship outside the US
