Hi, looking for some criticism on my acrylic painting.
How do I make my painting look less "cartoonish"?
I feel like the colors are off. The dark part of the sand is too dark. The sky is too light. And the boat's color doesn't really fit.
The ocean is pretty hard to paint accurately so I tried my best.

I think I did the palm trees pretty well though.

The cool thing about traditional real paintings is the possibility of using really bright and "super-real" colors. Like those tiny paintings that seems to be little windows on a wall, and you can't believe how bright the image in the painting is. Your painting has too much of a high percentage of muddy tonality. I know you're going for the high detail and that's commendable, but most of the time in landscape paintings, strategically placed "blotches" of the "right" pure colors can do wonders to fool the viewer eye into thinking that it a real outdoor reality.

The problem is not that it's "cartoonish", it's that the colors are way too dull.

I think it's because the sense of scale looks off.

The green stuff (bushes?) looks more like a jungle-mountain, but then the palm trees look giant. There's more stuff like how far away are the two trees and the bush(?) in the back, and how does it compare to the boat.

I like it, OP. But I'd also judge my own artwork as similarly cartoonish. My brother said I have a very "graphic" style and when I asked for clarification, he said my colors tend to be singular. What he meant was the color within different regions of my painting did not vary much. I see the same in yours, perhaps you can most easily see it in the thumbnail. The sky is a large block of consistent blue, as is the dry beach, as is the wet beach, as is the sea, etc. If I knew what to do with this information, I'd tell you, but I'm in the same boat.

It's a very bright day in your painting but I'm having trouble judging where the light is coming from. Maybe that contributes.

Heh, I think it's beautiful anyway.

make that photo grayscale, notice how the value of everything is unrealistically close, some things are darker colors than others, also the vegetation is really lazy, either use your artistic license to white out the hill in the back and omit detail, then take your time to detail the bushes on the beach or find some other way to get a satisfying look

the sky is dead, the water is nice and the palms are great

the images on the left dont have any particularly high saturation, the image on the right appears like that because you didnt take a good fucking look at it and notice that the yellow and shadow are contrasting to create depth, there Is nothing here that cant be done with digital, and I wish you were dead.

sorry i guess that I wrote something that either you already know and understand or you will think "uhh but brown is darker than yellow", so like reply to this post instead if you are triggered.

You need to work bigger mate.
I know its more expensive to invest in a bigger canvas and waste more paint but you seem capable of doing less cartoon shit based off of those trees and plant life you drew but other shit seems limited by size. You cant get into the gradients of the sand cause its such a small chunk of the piece, the only way you can depict the boat is this little cartoon version of it.
Another issue you have is that you arent confident in lying down your paint. Like you got this anon over here >>7994844 with his lecture but also notice something else with the pic he used compared to yours notice the one thing they have in common: The canvas fucking disappears. There are layers and layers of paint that you lose the more ameturish look of someone who just is satisfied with the one layer and still being able to see the canvas underneath and you get a more confident artist who isnt afraid to throw some fucking colors on there
One last thing is that you gotta mix your colors more. Like look at that sand again, like its two very distinct colors like it was straight of the tube, but the benefit of painting is that you can load multiple colors onto a brush and create variation. You dont even gotta premix them. Like if you got that land mass in the background, when you are painting it throw some of that fucking sky blue color you got going on and see what happens. Throw some dark purple color while you are painting the wet part of the sand in some areas
Have some fucking fun with it mate it aint a digital program where colors are calculated make a fucking mess

Thanks for all the advice.
I tried adding some more detail to the water, and sand

I actually tried making the wet part of the sand a bit gray/cyan but i don't think it worked too well. I went over it and made it back to brown. >>7995330
It's supposed to be a reflection of the sky on wet sand, and it was supposed to add a little more color...

> vegetation is really lazy
Yeah probably contributes to the scale being off
>sky is dead
Should the sky have had a gradient? Like lighter at the bottom, darker at the top?
>>

Hey this one's quite good. I think the three tiers of sand (yes, including the grey bit) are successful, as is your new water's edge. It's a little curious that the swashes (the little foamy arcs that climb the beach) get larger in the distance, but the overall effect is compelling.
>>
>>7995442
Do you think reverting back to dark brown was the wrong decision?
I just couldn't stand to look at the gray, it felt really out of place.
You only see gray when you're looking from a low angle and it reflects the sky on the water. From top down, which is what I have, you should see a darker color sand.
>>
>>7995454
If you couldn't stand the gray, then of course it needed to go! I'm hesitant to say so, but yes, >>7995333
is my favorite so far. I saw it and was happily surprised you were figuring it out so quickly.

But I am
>>7995144
with no special knowledge, so you might do best to wait for a more informed opinion. in any case, I'm learning something from your efforts, so thank you.

I would say it's the colors. Even if they are realistic, they don't have much in common. A tip I use it's to blend every color I use with a base color. For example of you want the paint to be cold colors I would blend all the colors with a brownish blue, just a pinch and then paint.
>>

the colors are not realistic.
