Anybody on this board do gamedev? It seems like there really isn't any dedicated space here to discuss it. The skill and workflow requirements of an artist in gamedev are quite different than one doing character comms or comics and so on, so I think its sort of its own subdomain in art.Any experiences working on jam, team, or solo projects?Any desire to work on games at some point, either as a hobby or a job?Why do you think /ic/ doesn't discuss game art much?
I didn't have any good images for the OP all I have is assorted concept art.Did you know its really fucking hard to find concept art that shows the production sketches AND any stage of the final asset? I don't think I have any!
video games are gay
>>7996470at some point ic collectively gave up, and instead of trying to get into a competitive industry, they now aspire to farm commissions / patreon coombucks
>>7996473your mother>>7996476did we ever used to have game dev threads here? with /ic/ being adjacent to places like crimson daggers I imagine there should have been but I haven't trawled the archives much for that subject
>>7996477>>7996476I’ve been here since 2018 and there have basically never been gamedev threads. Animation, concept art, comics, illustration, but no gamedev. I guess people think they need technical skills to get into it? But if all you’re doing is art, you really don’t. It’s definitely an underexplored avenue for artists here.Best place to talk about gamedev on 4chan is probably the /vg/ thread.
>>7996476nobody "gave up", it just became apparent what concept art actually is, and nobody wanted to do it anymoreremember the CA rush was fueled by romanticizing of the actual job by both people who just "wanted to work in video games" and people who thought it was illustration, feng went out of his way to dispel the delusion online because he was getting swamped by retards without interest in drawing nor the job imagining concept art as a stepping stone to becoming directors, and that was years into him creating the schoolliterally o body in their right mind would want to be a concept artist, least of all these days
>>7996479>Best place to talk about gamedev on 4chan is probably the /vg/ thread.aggydaggy sucks giganto cock they have a new spinoff thread on bant but the bant thread is kinda heads-down super cereal compared to even agdg pre-shitting. bit like the djt split between jp and int only reason to go to vg adgd is if you want to bitch about something without bothering the people doing actual work. or shitfling about AI.>>7996480concept art for big studios probably blows now and always blew but if code monkeys can find some value in doing indie games as a hobby or secondary job I'm not sure why artists would avoid it.plus there's a lot more to do in games than just concept art. environments, objects, UI, VFX, characters, 2d, 3d. there's something for everyone
>>7996470I might be the only gamedev in my art community. ("I'm the only gamedev here") Whenever I get the opportunity to chat with artists about videogames, it's extremely obvious that they haven't played a real videogame in their entire lives. Character design is probably the hardest part for me.
i'm working on pic rel as a solo dev, ignore the debug textthere's occasional pixel art threads, but game dev itself is a whole ordeal.sure, the sprites can be a real pain to make and animate but making sure everything actually flows right in the code requires an entire seperate skill setif you want actual gamedev stuff, go visit /agdg/ in /vg/
I want to make a visual novel but I suck. At everything.
>>7996493"doing indie games as a hobby" is not "trying to get into a competitive industry", /ic/ was invested into the latter, never the formeras to why, it's because getting good at art requires not just shitloads of time and effort, but more importantly the blind obsession needed to put in that time and effort into it, those kinds of people don't tend to want to sit there typing code and working out math formulas for their epic combat system instead of drawingconversely, people into gamedev are the dabbler type, and they don't tend to sit browsing a board about grinding boxesbasically, go to /vg/ if you want gamedev, this is a drawing board
>>7996470I actually got into drawing because of my gamedev hobby.Ironically, I found art more interesting and fun than gamedev, so I ended up dropping the latter.
This thread is the equivalent of asking /mu' why they're not making video games because there's music in video gamesI want to draw, I don't want to make video gamesIf I did, I'd be on a video game board
>>7996498i feel like its really difficult to talk art shit in either agdg. code feedback comes in easy if you've got an interesting question or are insistent enough but any kind of art talk, much less instruction or advice, is few and far between.what's the project about?>>7996503/ic/ wasn't that money hungry in ye olden days. i'm not personally an oldfag but what i have seen in the archives tells me that for-fun passion projects used to abound here. this board isn't that much newer than /i/>those kinds of people don't tend to want to sit there typing code and working out math formulas for their epic combat system instead of drawingi know this is the autism capital of the world and everyone here today wants to be by themselves at all times but i feel like this place used to be less allergic to team projects. guy who codes, guy who draws, and guy who musics can't be that alien of a concept, no?>basically, go to /vg/ if you want gamedev, this is a drawing board/vg/ types don't do art. its 99% code monkeys or one man armies. there's no space in /agdg/ to discuss prop design or asset pipelines and not enough people who really give a shit
>>7996493>plus there's a lot more to do in games than just concept art. environments, objects, UI, VFX, characters, 2d, 3d. there's something for everyoneso are you posting this same thread on /3d/, /gd/ etc or are you just here to demand we care about your interest?
>>7996515What's the video game development board?
>>7996516I've been here since ~2010, you're retarded and delusional, we used to have constant threads discussing industry rates, gigs, how to break in and so on. The interest was so job focused it spawned an entire industry that made it more profitable for pros to teach than to actually work.
>>7996519>>>/vg/
>>7996516>/vg/ types don't do artDo you?
>>7996470there is no such thing as "game art". there is just good art like on your OP, and then there is bad indie goyslop that comes off as "game art" because indie games don't usually care about art quality.
>>7996515Is this that foreign a concept? Guys who make [stuff] would make [stuff] for [medium]?Feel like I'm in fucking bizarro world>>7996518>or are you just here to demand we care about your interest?Unbunch your panties, kitten.I'm asking if anyone here does art for games. I'd like to discuss the topic of making art for games. There is no fucking way that the entirety of everyone who makes art for games and uses 4chan is contained neatly and nicely in /agdg/ especially with how little actual work gets posted there.I'm not here to demand (You) do anything. I'm trying to draw out people who already do a thing, and just hang out talk shop about the thing we both do.>>7996520Good lord why are we getting so heated so fast. I just meant that I think passion-only projects or people who weren't into art for any kind of money used to be more common here, not that nobody.>>7996522Yes?
You guys are being anal in this thread. OP just want us to share our game art. It could be tilesets, sprites or 2d assets. No need to write paragraphs about the golden age of /ic/ because all of you are still the same basement dwelling hermits.
>>7996524>I'm asking if anyone here does art for games.no, you're asking about gamedev
>>7996524Cool, post some and maybe we can talk about art on the art board and not your tangentially related hobby.>>7996525We know you're samefagging, maybe start by posting your own.
>>7996525Curious how you didn't share your art for being so understanding of OP
>>7996524Is this that foreign a concept? Guys who have interest in [stuff] would be on the [stuff] board and not wait for some random retard to come find them on a board that's not about [stuff]?
>>7996525/ic/ has no friends.
>>7996470I've been working on a retro-style puzzle platformer in C for about two years now, but development's slowed down a bit because I think I made the tiles way too big... Now I have to rework the whole engine so I can resize them x__xBy the way, I'm using SDL2 for event handling and rendering and Lua for the entity logic.
>>7996551By the way, here's a low-poly 3D model of the game's protagonist. I might end up using it in a simple game someday.
>>7996528Didn't want to open talking about me and my begshit but sureProject this is from won't ever release unfortunately. Despite how shit the sprites look I don't like ditching projects. Part of my reason for hoping there was space to talk art for games is it seems easier to advance in skill working on a project, and working with others, than grinding fundies solo.not a samefag but it is neat that (You) whiners seem to post in unison >>7996532I would have expected both. Just like there's two /djts/ or that both here and /co/ have webcomic threads or that both /vg/ and /jp/ have 2hu threads or both /jp/ and the porn boards have JAV threads or that /vrpg/ and /vg/ have gamedev threads etc etcthere's a lot of overlap across the site>>7996551Oh she's cute! Is the fullbody on the side for fun or does it tie into some kind of mechanic? How long did it take you to get this far with the animation set?
>>7996470I'm a hobbyist game developer. I do everything myself, writing, art, game mechanics, and more. In real life, I'm a project manager and developer.>Any experiences working on jam, team, or solo projects?A bunch of mini stories with simple mechanics, all made solo. The only way I'd work with others is if I were paying them.>Any desire to work on games at some point, either as a hobby or a job?I like to tell the stories I want to.>Why do you think /ic/ doesn't discuss game art much?Because you haven't asked any questions related to art yet.
>>7996568>static hairPathetic.
>>7996573Team lead was very picky about it that was as much as he let me do even for as low-skill as it was. The bit of design on the chest was a whole debate. He wanted the game to be very "so retro".There's a water sprite in the asset folder i can't remember what water shit he wanted me to do but I'm not opening aesprite to figure out what its of>>7996569>The only way I'd work with others is if I were paying them.Any reason why? This seems to be a recurring thread when I ask about gamedev
>>7996568>Oh she's cute! Thanks! :P>Is the fullbody on the side for fun or does it tie into some kind of mechanic?Um... it's mostly for 'aesthetics'. The game is meant to have a somewhat 'softcore' feel (I'm thinking of games like Athena or Golden Axe). Since the main character's sprite is very small and cannot show much detail, I decided to display an enlarged version in a separate window allowing me to portray its 'sensuality' with much more freedom :) My plan is for every sprite animation to have its own enlarged counterpart.>How long did it take you to get this far with the animation set?Honestly I haven't spent much time on the graphics. For now, they are just placeholders. I’d say I’ve spent around 10 hours total on them over the last two years. Most of my development time has gone into creating the engine and the supporting tools for the game. The nice thing is that I’ll be able to reuse these tools and libraries in future projects, which will make development much easier.Picrel: the main character drawn by a kind anon :P
>>7996520I agree. It was about money and getting into ttue /adv/ level ASAP. Damn /ic/ used to be crazy good.
>>7996609>/adv/nu/ic/ /beg/ subcasteold /ic/ only recognized /beg/ and pro
>>7996470I've been doing gamedev since I was a kid. No releases yet, never learned to finish a game... I learned to code about 10 years ago. I post here infrequently. (mostly just pixel art threads, dtiys threads and fill in the shape threads)
Yeah, I'm working on my first game right now it's a 2d pixelshit side scroller mario clone. I'm still working on the enemies and the players animations. and I've made a bunch of shitty concept art for the characters
>>7996643oh hi! me >>7996641
>>7996647Oh it's you! Thanks for helping me with that sprite man i've gotten better at animating by using it as a reference
>>7996470Sure, might as well. Trying to get more into gamedev but honestly the art is what I like doing, and really if I'm doing a solo project it might just be a visual novel. Character concept sheet I have created for something I had in mind.I may be too dumb for coding and system making for normal games.
i used to be into gamedev back when i couldnt draw, and that was because I wanted to make something out of useless programming skills, now I can draw but I dont think that there is a type of game that would be fun to develop for me, I have a taste for fine art and stoner cartoony shit, I would need the development process to be 90% art that I enjoy making, it doesnt seem possible as an individual effortthen again obviously games with good art make a lot of money, meh, you could word it like "for me doing what i want / self actualization matters more than money" but maybe I am just delusional.
I member the days when the hacker known as 4chan made a videogame, and crappy as it was it still inspired me to make a vn game, someday. Havent started yet as I want to at least become high /mid or even /adv in art and storytelling, being already proficient in tech and music. Its a cool dream
>>7996470>Why do you think /ic/ doesn't discuss game art much?it's seen as childish sadly. I've seen people on here put down others for using art from video games to make points which i always found paradoxical because people will also endlessly fellate anime/anime adjacent art which is made for the same demographic.
>>7996769just refute it by showing that they share the same techniques and that artists that do one medium tend to appear in the other adjacent mediums too, it's just Japanese style character illustration.discussions about demographics usually get derailed by bad actors.
>>7996583If it's my project, not theirs, they need to adapt to an established standard and way of doing things. We're all working with each other's time, so I need deliverables completed in a timely manner. If it's a collaborative effort without a clear project lead, things can become disorganized very quickly. It's difficult to find people who know how to compromise and who are equally capable of leading when necessary and following directions when someone else is in charge.
>>7996470as a new artist looking to aim for this in the future, how do you even get into stuff like this? primarily on the japanese side of things, is it even possible to get hired as an artist into a japanese game company?
>>7996828do you know japanese, not anime, actual japaenese? start there
>>7996843i studied it for about 4 years but its been a while, i can watch shows, vtubers, doujins, manga etc without too much issuemy concern is mostly that i only started learning art in my late 20s, so i feel like ill be mid 30s before i even get good enough to have a shot, at that point would it just be better to aim for an American job but on a game with my preferred anime-type art style?
>>7996828>is it even possible to get hired as an artist into a japanese game companyyes, but you won't be because they have to pay like 20% extra tax for foreigners and they already have a million better artists there that actually speak their language, understand social and work culture and aren't annoying little weebs
>>7996828Nobody here works at a jap company but my advice is the same as anything else in art. Build a portfolio, make connections, etc. Take the jlpt, probably get a degree.Art is weird and there is no path. There are people better than you who can't find work. There are people worse than those people who are drowning in work.
Would creating textures be /ic/-related? Where do you go to learn more on that topic?
>>7996949>Would creating textures be /ic/-related?I hope>Where do you go to learn more on that topic?Never seen any kind of paste or chart on it so I got nothing to rec personally. I get most of my gamedev art advice from youtube.
>>7996949Why not? It's niche, but it still applies all the fundamentals of art. You can learn a lot about texturing from artists like Rothko or Alan Green. Nowadays, you also have 3D textures that you can find on game asset rip sites /3/ , and from there you can move into shaders for ingame texturing. What's the catch? Technical knowledge.
The /beg/'s are going crazy in this thread lol wtf. Are they that afraid?
>>7996949If you mean for pixel art, draw from real life then simplify to the style you're going for. All the same art rules apply to game art.
>>7996949it is, but I've never seen anyone simply sharing textures they made here. if you paint, hand painted textures are something you are a natural at, and critique here is relevant.
>>7996470Video games are ass. I do art for art's sake.
>>7997135videogames are easy bucks though
>>7996493>plus there's a lot more to do in games than just concept art.Understatement of the year. Game art is probably less than 5% "concept art".And that's probably the reason it's not discussed a lot around here, because most of it is either 3dcg or something that can be filed under graphic design and there are other boards for those. We do get pixel art threads semi-regularly and that's sort of relevant to games.
>>7996949/3dcg/wow, so many retards here.
>>7997239>Understatement of the year. Game art is probably less than 5% "concept art".Concept art is mostly for bigger studios to convey ideas. If you're solo, you can do music / writing / environment art / game sprites / full character art / sprites for animations / the actual animating / sound design. You can do all of it yourself and make it tie together better than any AAA game can.You can make a music-focused game. You can make a game focusing on a particular artstyle. You can make a game with unique art for every possible interaction and choice the player makes. If you still can't be bothered, you can make a game that's never published as a game and is just uploaded as .gifs and videos (petscop, horseracetests)I got into gamedev because, as I was learning art, I realised that if I just do art commissions I'll never be fast enough to make good money and I'll never be able to stand out. When you make a game, you give yourself near-unlimited freedom in exchange for the challenge of getting people to actually download your shit instead of just looking at it for 10 seconds on twitter.com.
>>7997255holy retard
>>7997257Say what you want, but I've already won
>>7997261post game
>>7997261what you want, but I've already won
>>79972452d games don't paint textures?
>>7997286They're called either sprites, tiles, bitmaps, illustrations or something else.Textures is 3d lingo though it's true that modern gpu's handles it all the same.
>>7997255>Concept art is mostly for bigger studios to convey ideas.>If you're soloSpeaking of,Anybody have experience here working in teams? Not large corps, but teams. Jams, indie projects, freelance (paid or unpaid) for small groups, etc. Seems like the only types of devs anyone thinks about are big boys in the pro leagues or people going for the one-man-army approach.
>>7997292teams only work irl.
>>7997319speaking from experience or guessing based on hearsay?
>>7997255>When you make a game, you give yourself near-unlimited freedom in exchange for the challenge of getting people to actually download your shit instead of just looking at it for 10 seconds on twitter.com.But you have to make a game worth playing. Which leads to people making a gimmicky game or some puzzle bullshit for a quick buck, or a passion project that takes 5 years.
>>7996769>>7996777Kek I remember seeing an argument break out in /begint/ and when somebody used George Kamitani's (and bengus' iirc) art in their defence they got lynched by the thread for using a lowly vidya character designer as an example.
>>7996497Hey, I've played plenty of real video games before in my life. It's not my fault that the only games with decent art direction these days is gachaslop and the occasional jrpg...
>>7997319This is a lie lmao
>>7996921Ive worked for a Japanese card game for anime illustrations, it was pretty dope
>>7996762>I want to at least become high /mid or even /adv in art and storytelling,Don't do this. If you have this mentality you'll never start anything because your brain will always be constantly downplaying your skill level no matter how much you improve. Its best to just start and get better over time
>>7997381Kamitani has great style, but his work is unironically shit technically, I was surprised how low skill he is when I decided to study him
>>7997526>you'll never start anything because your brain will always be constantly downplaying your skill level no matter how much you improveDK disproves this completely, higher skill always results in higher confidence compared to previous skill level.
Been mulling this over in trash for the past few days but would anyone here participate in a jam if one was hosted? Was thinking of trying to organize something specifically /beg/ oriented, or /beg/-welcoming at least.I think that having collaborators and people to bounce ideas off of quickly really helps accelerate progress, is a good way to keep motivation/productivity high, and would just generally help people socialize.I'm imagining shorter jams to cycle teams quickly and minimize time losses if teams lose members. Depending on the skew of art people to not art people there may be a lean towards code-light genres like VNs but still I think it'd be nice to make something.Any thoughts? Regardless of how well you think it might go in general, would you join a jam and commit if one was started for here? I know I'm not the only person who wants to do stuff other than solo grind till they've earned the right to make real projects, and the code end isn't *that* hard depending on scope and genre and engine.
>>7996476>ic collectively gave up/iC/ fell out of love with Concept Art, specially when most here realized that it's just Photobashing and AI assisted slop.
>>7997546Every good artist on /ic/ went into the industry a decade ago, and the people who came here later don't even know that the industry exists because they've never seen anyone mention it.
