What tips and/or practice methods helped you improve at character design the most?

uhh
less is more
draw ugly men in exaggerated dynamic poses
you only need 3 colors at most

Study designs you like, try lots of different ideas

I'm not really good at character design but I heard that paying attention to sillhouette is important.
A unique character design is instantly recognizable by the sillhouette alone.

I think that's more of a thing for cartoony styles tho. I draw semi-realistic style so that doesn't really interest me. To me a good character design could just look like an average person.

I used to participate in character of the week challenges, not sure if there's anything like that around the net these days, probably on some art discords? detailed backstories help. use references.

Try it until you get something that you want to draw again.

combine reference to make something new. At the start you'll be pretty literal about using them and you'll treat the process like additions. You want to take your own idea and use the ref as support for it, there's a lot of ugly that come out from doing it but it's essentially what you want to practice, your fundamentals will make the landing of your goals clearer and inform you on why the design "doesn't work" or what can you improve upon.

>paying attention to sillhouette is important
That's only true if you're drawing Donald Duck and Micky Mouse. Sihouette doesn't matter at all for human/realistic characters.

lol

>downloaded from a thread on /i/, if I change the right one's hair a little bit and tell you they are sisters it sounds convincing, just because of the fucking hat.

No it counts for cartoony/heavily stylized styles. Son Goku is instantly recognizable as sillhouette. All kinds of manga/anime characters are instantly recognizable. It just doesn't work that well for more realistic character designs, but even there it can work to some degree.
