Are there any benefits to gain from tracing, or is it just a waste of time? I believe the latter

You gain the ability to draw wojaks

wtf I love tracing now.

If you have a pencilled drawing, how do you turn it into an inked drawing?
You're allowed to think before you answer.

No idea

Waste of time in terms of drawing skill development.
But doesn’t mean you can’t make good art with tracing.

better to trace from real life than a drawing

Crabs really just ask dumb questions and make a ton of pointless threads instead of actually drawing, huh?

You see, time spent waiting for answers is not wasted, so you should always ask questions so you can do nothing without wasting time

the opposite actually

I have so many ideas for threads, you can't even imagine.

Tracing can be very beneficial but you have to use it in the proper context. Trace photos meaningfully, then draw from memory, then copy your references (no tracing!), then draw from memory again.

For beginners, tracing is helpful for building up line confidence and muscle memory as well as understanding proportions. It helps you find the structure of a subject and identify which contours give the effect of depth.

Anyone who says "don't trace" is a fucking idiot. Obviously, you shouldn't trace other people's art and pass it off as your own. But omitting tracing as a tool altogether is retarded. Animators literally trace as part of their job.

how dare you actually post helpful stuff

I know. I'm the worst!

In all seriousness, tracing is something you should be doing as part of your usual drawing routine. The American art community has such stupid stipulations about what artists should or shouldn't do only for everyone to act all surprised and pretend that East Asians are just "magically better" at art.

You want to know how to get better at drawing?

>Draw from memory.
>Observe your subject. Trace.
>Make a copy of the subject (don't look at your paper)
>Draw from memory.
>Make a copy of your subject, feel free to look at your paper as you do.
>Draw from memory again.
>Repeat the process.

To properly use references:
>make an upside down copy of the reference
>trace but mark where features go and how things connect
>do negative space and silhouette studies of the reference
>break down the reference into shapes and forms
>do a blind contour but with your non-dominant hand

This is quite literally all you need to do in order to improve dramatically. Too many anons make excuses. Learning how to draw means you have to actually grit your teeth and do the hard work first before you play hard. At the same time, the process needs to be simple and easy to do, which is what I'm offering.

If you find yourself overwhelmed, start with simple subjects like Kirby. Print out lots of Kirby references, get a Kirby toy or plush, etc.

i think there's a benefit to taking a drawing and tracing over it to figure out its construction.
wholesale tracing, not much, unless you're new to a tablet and trying to get line control down.
