Being an illustrator in the 80s was so easy it's unreal.
It had a lower entry barrier but it was harder to learn. Nowadays you have the internet and all kinds of information on how to do anything.

>>7999571my local library has jack shit drawing books that aren't "HOW TO DRAW MANGA -by non-japanese guy" tier. thankfully i can go to their website and have them transfer a good book that i was able to research online and find reviews for beforehand to me.in the 80s after going to your local library to check the card catalog and checking out what they have, what do you do when none of it is good, if it's just the 80s equivalent of guides that give you 4 steps on how to draw thing but not really teaching you fundamentals. when you don't just have a computerized library system connected to every branch library to easily transfer books. your then stuck talking to the librarian asking them if they can help you track down... drawing books. nothing specific, you wouldn't know what books are good, you just know you want to learn to draw but have no communication with other artists to know what they'd recommend. the librarian would likely point you towards local art classes at this point.we should acknowledge that the internet is an amazing resource that has revolutionized learning and even compared to 30 years ago, it's way more accessible for a modern artist to learn the skills they need today than if you were using BBSes in the 90s.

You might think that the internet allows you to learn something you couldn't have done before, but in reality it just makes you waste your time outside of your own society. Thirty years on there still isn't a single good drawing text at your library as a result of everyone in your town being able to discover all of them, because that's not what happened, what happened was that everyone got absorbed into the internet and nobody has managed to escape back to real life.

i learned to draw without guides and books. you just need a pencil and not be lazy. i actually think self discovery is better, because you tread your own way, covered in failures. those failures are forks in roads and lead to the paths take being retread, thus making them wider and distinct. some people walk a straight like musashi, some people are matahachi.

>>7999528I don't know about that. I browse X and I've never seen so many promising young talents. 17, 18, 17, 19, 22, 20, 21, 17, 16, 19. They're drawing extremely well, they're painting, they're animating, they're sculpting well in 3D with Blender, they're animating at high frame rates. I've never seen anything like it. I imagine living in an underdeveloped country or wanting to get good enough to be able to travel or move for better work opportunities is a huge motivator, these kids are playing for keeps. Meanwhile most Americans who work in, or I guess at this point worked in, the animation industry had drawings that could be charming, decent, and occasionally impressive. But it doesn't even touch what these Chinese, Japanese, Malaysian, Korean, Russian and French kids can do. Not even the same ballpark.Rather than be demoralized by it since I'm in my early 30s, it's energized me. I know what I want to draw and what I like, but their art keeps my mind open even as I get older.
