Not sure if I would describe the average /ic/ poster as “decent”…
Having a community is really important for getting better, any community. Just getting into a regular habit of posting art and getting feedback does wonders for your motivation. It does for mine anyway. It’s natural to care about something more if you feel like you’re doing it with other people and you don’t want to let them down.
Obviously if you just spent all day shitposting here instead of drawing then that would be counterproductive. Although /ic/ right now isn’t fast enough for me to actually waste that much time here.

I know it might seem soulless, but taking a more structured approach might help
>first light and shadow
>then ambient occlusion, and highlights
>finally halftones and bounce light
(that's the order of importance, imo)
right now it feels like you spent your energy on the blue dress but then left entire parts completely empty, like the socks or shoes
the good thing about those splits is that you can decide to stop at the first or second and the drawing would still look finished

Used to be like that. Now I'm way healthier. I solved my anxiety disorder, and now I even do normie things such as eating better food, going to the gym, swimming, and a little bit of walking almost every day. Need a bit of meds to help with sleep, but now I keep a consistent schedule.

I was skeptical, but the quality of life did improve enough for me to even go back to grinding drawing and actually be capable of sitting and drawing.

Skull report status update.
Traced this whole thing from one of hide's examples, except for the teeth and inner jaw area. I utterly cannot for the life of me get the teeth to look right so I just wanted to focus on that and nothing else. I still haven't succeeded but I do think I'm learning things and making progress.
1. Kind of a "duh" moment but the jawbone has a sort of hinge that connects to the rest of the skull (circled in blue) in two specific places, one end of the hinge hooks right to the center line on the side (where the ear would be) and the other end of the hinge is right behind the cheekbone. I think mapping out these points first and drawing the jawbone before the teeth helps me keep things straight, instead of working top to bottom and drawing the maxilla and then the teeth and then the jawbone. This is something that I forget and rediscover every once in a while, you should map out as many points that you're 100% sure of (e.g. where different things have to connect) first, and then fill in everything in the middle.
2. The bottom edge of the maxilla and the upper edge of the jawbone (circled in green) are not parallel, they need to converge faster than you would expect. The edge of the maxilla either goes straight back or even curves slightly downward depending on what reference skull you're looking at, whereas the upper edge of the jawbone (i.e. the bottom row of teeth) curves noticeably upward. I had them running parallel for the longest time, which has been giving my skulls an unnatural "smile" (your brain sees that the two lines aren't converging fast enough so it decides that the edge of the maxilla is curving upwards more than it normally does). I think a lot of persistent mistakes that plague people's drawings come from just not being aware of these sorts of subtle features of the object that you're drawing.
>>
>>8006158
3. Area circled in red still looks wrong, no idea why. I'm going back to just drawing pure frontal and pure side views to make sure I really understand the proportions, maybe I can identify some more problems that way.
I'm utterly demoralized with how long this is taking me but hopefully by the end I'll be better for it and I'll be able to apply these lessons to drawing other things in the future.

yeah it's normal. takes a while for your muscles to get used to holding up the weight of your arm while also doing fine motor control. frequently rest your arm while you think about your next stroke or step back from your drawing. takes a couple of weeks to get used to it. take a proper break if it ever actually hurts. your endurance will quickly increase.

I really want to see the work of someone wasting so much time and energy criticizing this random.

I think his art is pretty good, so reading all this vague criticism like is "messy" or "is so easy, of course it looks good" kinda makes me think both of you are just extremely painfully jelly of his skill.

I did not know we still had that many females on this board, you think the captchas being as they are would filter 90% of them by now. Do you girls pay for the 4chan premium? that is pretty cringe, not gonna lie.

But in all reality, if I was an artist and not only wasting so much of limited time on this earth gossiping about some guy I don't even know the name because his art, and still being so afraid to post my all work because words in a screen would hurt my feelings I would straight up just kill myself, there is being worthless garbage and there this. So you know, think about that, how you care so much about art but your own art makes you feel so bad you need to feel jealous of others and is too scared to post yourself. Just think reaally hard about that and hopefully you will find that motivation to go on and kill yourself already. Rooting for the both of you, now if you excuse me, I'm going to draw loli pornography, because it is fun. Have a good day/night.

There's no criticism, there are values, no colors, no composition, it's just a messy sketch that was done with references. How the fuck do you even critique something like that? It's not high-/int/ . /adv/ is a worthless metric since even shit like stonetoss is technically /adv/

I will short for you because of your limited reading skills. You are a female(disgusting) or a female brain dude (even more disgusting). If you don't even have the courage to post your own work while criticizing someone, any opinion you may hold is just worthless garbage by showing you don't have confidence in your skills and you are just spilling out your feelings because you feel inferior, conscious or not. ESPECIALLY if you are upset at someone else judging their work in high regard.

Learn to behave like a proper human being (male). or kill yourself. I don't care which.

As a final addendum, here is my work. And I really hope one day you kill yourself, really, from the bottom of my heart.

I do admire artstation artists because good art requires fundamentals .

The /ic/ power level chart is based around said fundamentals

You also get good by grinding the fundamentals.

you're on the right track anon, it's just that your value structure does not support your focal point
right now the highest value contrast is on the planes in the armor, which is most likely not what you want
the light setup you have (an overcast day) is also not easy
I'd separate more the figures from the bg, maybe add some light rays that shine through the clouds to create value contrast with the figures' heads

idk what the fuck I'm doing. blob warmup, also got filtered by the sketch from imagination Proko project
book stand came in, can also be used as an easel which is neat. tried some trad drawing and turns out I absolutely hate it; tried a ballpoint, regular pencil, mechanical pencil, didn't like any of them. didn't feel I could be as gestural, the texture of the paper was throwing me off, didn't like how I couldn't rest my hand near the edges of the page, yadda yadda, not to mention all of the countless advantages of digital I was missing
did a quick black background painting doodle thing and had fun with it for a few minutes and then realized I can't actually draw so it's just random shit
drawing from observation is so painfully unfun and annoying it drives me nuts but I know I need to do it for the type of stuff I want to do. this is all just a mess

make the coats a dead black, make the reds closer to a fully saturated red/orange, blues go darker and more saturated, yellows and browns stay the same until you do the rest right

the armor, darker dark, sharper edge yet on the right panes, the value for the light seems fine, then all of it needs a wash of yellow, probably lowering the value of the highlight and stop touching it
>>
>>8006180
the eyes might be a tad too big and watch the ellipse on the megaphone, but the worst offender is the light source, in my opinion: some parts look like the light is coming directly from the right whereas others are lit directly from above/front, try brushing up on light source on basic shapes and applying those principles to this piece and i think it could be decent, cheekbones and all.
>>8006205
cool 4k stuff. One of the gentle folds in the fabric (near the pelvis) on the tabard is veering off towards the bottom corner of the tapestry when I believe it should be curving towards the second peak of the wave (near the bent knee).

I feel that cross-out and it's a good sign to see multiple attempts that envelop it, I'm not so brave anymore and have a tendency to delete the evidence. i have a tendency to make the facial features too large in general but i have improved on the nose and mouth. i must be making eyes too big still. i'm used to relying on posterization as a bit of a crutch when it comes to seeing value and i have switched to full-color, unaltered references and traditional media and it's quite a bit more challenging. thank you for the crit.

I would just reduce details around the legs and below them, it's not important and doesn't add much to the story of the piece. I would also darken some corners in the sky just point the viewer even more towards their helmets

Take your left hand and prepare to slap your knee the same way the subject is, pay attention to where your thumb is positioned; it should be angled and pointed toward an area just above your head. That hand position appears to be 'tossing an object away', which is basically backwards to 'ready to slap'.
While the cheek pressing against an object is well executed, the object being a fox tail (which is quite fluffy) makes the effect misplaced as it wouldn't have that much resistance, if she had a rigid tail (like an alligator) it would work great.
Don't give up and don't dwell on the 'failure', we're all trying to learn here, there's a lot of character in your work.

a lot of it I just stumble upon on twitter, whether it's reposted or recommended or by seeing who the artist follows. it can be useful to think about the things you enjoy and then think about what its inspirations were
for example I like Oddworld, and that took inspiration from Brian Froud's The Dark Crystal and work in general. after learning of Froud I dug into one of his inspirations (John Bauer). from there I found modern artists that were inspired by both Froud and Bauer, like Alvaro Tapia, Eoghan Kerrigan, Justin Gerard, Paul Bonner and Tony DiTerlizzi
I'd avoid deviantart like the plague. pinterest might have an anti-AI search feature, not sure since it's been shit for a while now. artstation can be hit or miss, usually only useful when you want to scope out an artist's work, wouldn't really use it for general searching unless you want mostly generic /pro/ work
check out concept art for games and films (Jodorowsky's Dune has some cool concept art for example), looking at the artists of book covers (Bruce Pennington springs to mind), films in general can be good for costume design (Eiko Ishioka). also for games a lot of the time they'll have a signature artist, more common with Japanese games but someone like Jun Suemi for Wizardry, Terada for the old Zelda and Mana games, Toriyama for DQ etc
idk man there's inspiration everywhere, to the point it's almost overwhelming with how much good art there is

Dumb argument. Playing instruments also has the same disparity in control/precision, but any beginner will feel great improvements as they practice (which I did). But I have yet to see any progress with my pen work/control, and I have much more practice on this than the guitar/piano. It is not just the expected disparity in skill, but how steep it seems to be the stairs of this particular skill. It does feel a little genetic even.

Having fun is the #1 thing so if that’s what you want to do then do it. In order to improve from imagination drawings you have to identify mistakes in the drawing and fix them by comparing your drawing to an existing reference and seeing how it deviates. If you draw something wrong and just leave it wrong and move on then it contributes exactly 0 to your progress. Just keep that in mind.

don't feel like I did a ton today, the trad attempt pissed me off I guess
finishing with some small painting doodles, might incorporate my warmups into this to at least make it more fun. not sure how to render yet so it's kinda just applying the color and smearing
I think I've realized that I definitely don't enjoy trying to do detailed line art, like with the frogs earlier, it's annoying to get lost in all the details, same with something like birds with their feathers or an animal with fur. not sure how painting / digital painting compares to drawing raw, like obviously they both need line art but I'd assume painters need less detailed bases, and with something like fur they can imply texture by laying down blobs of color changes rather than meticulously drawing fur. maybe I'm more of a painter than a sketcher. or maybe I'm just a fag

>it's disciplined drawing fag
When the /beg/ leadeth the /beg/, both fall into the /beg/trap.
Whatever good points this guy might make are buried under an absolute mountain of backwards retardation. His whole deal essentially is that he tried doing the most basic tried-and-true drawing methods, completely misunderstood them, and did them wrong. He then proceeded to bounce off of them so hard that he concluded that it was the methods that must be at fault rather than he, and set off on a grand and idiotic quest to invent a new and better wheel, a wheel made entirely of squares. He's the very definition of getting ahead of oneself. Even though he's at best high /beg/ in drawing skills and straight up misunderstands drawing on a theoretical level, he really thinks that he can create some brand new hyperautistic system with slick, marketable terms and acronyms, write a book, and teach people how to draw with it even though what he's done is just create backwards and retarded reimplementations of things we already know that were taught better in other books by people who aren't addlepated autistics too lost in the trees to see the forest.
>>
Let's just go over this video and the concept of PCS- it's in the book by the way, I just checked. So he starts off by completely misunderstanding the purpose of construction, and gets the concept of breaking things down into shapes and using guidelines COMPLETELY wrong by conflating it with construction. First off, construction is for breaking things down into THREE dimensional volumetric forms. The subject that he's going over is TWO dimensional shape-based copying from observation. Second of all, in all the examples he gave of using "construction", the idiot straight up drew the shapes representing the subject completely wrong (because he symbol-drew them), placed the guidelines incorrectly (because he was symbol drawing), and then he didn't even follow the guidelines he put down (because he's retarded). The solution? The PEE SEE ESS system: Placement, Contour, and Size. In other words, you uhhhh draw the contour lines that you see, BUT you do it correctly instead of doing it wrong, and you draw them in the right place and, uh, *checks notes* the right size, and yeah that's it OH and you do it freehand. That's the PISSES SYSTEM, folks, BAZINGA OH MY GOD HE'S A GENIUS. Of course, when you're actually breaking things down into shapes and using guidelines, it's something more like picrelated- putting down lines to measure with to keep proportions in check, drawing the subject in simplified shapes. Not literal square-circle-triangle shapes, rather rough approximations of the main components of what you're copying that you then further refine into the correct contour. What he's advocating for sounds like to me is that he's literally too ADHD for that and is opting for a "throw yourself at a brick wall until you break it" approach of drawing the thing freehand, comparing it to the subject, redrawing, and repeat until you get it right. I mean, I get the ADHD thing, but I at least know that I'm retarded.
>>
Now it's not as if there's no precedent for anything he's saying- balls-to-the-wall freehand drawing actually is a valid exercise for increasing your raw hand-eye coordination skill, and to keep you from getting stuck in a rut. Ideally, as you go along, you'll drop more and more of the guidelines so you can draw more freely, expressively, and efficiently. The problem is that it's not actually good for beginners to do that to start with, especially to do that only. He says that guidelines and such are for people with more experience, which is totally backwards (also still conflating construction with 2D breakdowns and guidelines). Beginners SHOULD start with exercises where they measure and lay down guidelines because what they're doing is like doing a math problem step by step on the page- they're explicitly marking out the size and proportion relationships so that they can LEARN to see them better, and once they learn to see them they can do more of it in their head and use less guidelines. His "method", if you can really call it that, is just sheer brute-forcing- again, most likely because he's got a special brain, and to him that's "easier" than using guidelines. However, he ends up writing about size/angle relationships and proportions later in the book where he essentially does just create construction guidelines anyways. It's a confusing, jumbled, backwards, overcomplicated warren of rabbitholes filled with a diarrheic deluge of jargon and almost no practical, actionable, useful advice. In the book, he starts off by talking about freehand contour drawing, then he goes into the subject of interpreting and correlating contour with 3D information and ROTATING THEM (!!!WHAT!!!), then goes to the subject of learning to PERCEIVE contours and the method of brute force reiterative copying, and then in the LAST THREE CHAPTERS he goes over the subject of measuring angles and proportions (badly). It's insane. The boy is a certifiably bughouse nuts wacky waffle moonbrain.

basically the only art teacher on youtube I've found to be worth a shit is Steven Zapata
99% of it is 'here is the SECRET to drawing', or 'start doing THIS', 'STOP doing this' etc and it's usually just a way for them to blueball you and try to shill you a course at the end like that Artwod prick

Yeah I dunno, it feels like my brain just shuts off after filling in the base colors. I dabbled a bit with light and shadow using add glow layer and multiply layer, but then the light got too bright and I started fumbling trying to pick a better color, same with the shadow layer. Maybe I should just stick to a basic layer for light, pick something that is a bit brighter than the base color while hue shifting (basically thinking warm/cold) same with the shadow layer, and then just go from there

In short, I just need to practice more

what the other Anon said. though if you want a more gradual step from the 'mons check out Preston Blair's Advanced Animation. well the left is much better, idk what you mean by advice just extrapolate what you should do on your next "loosely referenced" drawing to get it to look more realistic.

I feel that I have something similar, when I write a sentence my words drift downward, and if I'm not being conscious about it they will literally deviate into the next row of lined paper in a 'does this guy have brain damage' sort of way. This also affects my drawing, naturally, which makes methods like Construction difficult; but what really helps me is flipping the canvas.
I started trying to learn to draw on a tablet in 2023 and had some fun with it until I was studying a book that suggested flipping the canvas- At first I was like 'Do i really need to do that? What a hassle'.
My drawing was skewed, remarkably. Not only was it skewed, I went back and looked at everything I drew for the last two years, almost all of it was horribly skewed, only the most intently copied study was somewhat aligned. I stopped drawing for a year. Now, I flip my canvas.

Don't give up if you really want to draw. Fun is the most important part and frustration easily overshadows that aspect, which makes drawing miserable. If you are constantly frustrated, you are drawing for the wrong reasons or attempting a study that might be a step out of reach, find what makes you happy.

this Proko shit is killing me. I don't give a fuck about line weight and all that crap, I just want to learn the cold calculating science of creating convincing 3D forms already FUCK
thankfully nearly done with the Lines section with Shapes coming up, 17% through overall
potentially retarded but am I incorrect in assuming that things like line weight are less important when painting? I'd think painting is more in the realm of value and color but less so line, outside of using it as a base to paint over, and even then I see some people rawdog it and just throw down blobs of color
all I know is that the shit on the left feels different to the right and is painful for me to do, aka traditional Drawing™

This is a distinction Harold Speed calls Line vs Mass drawing. Line has a thinking related with your sense of touch, like when you drag your finger across a sphere or follow the shape of a rubber-band wrapped around it. Lines don't exist in real life, they are a concept derived from your sense of touch. Mass is related to your sense of vision, more specifically how light lays flat onto the retina. The way light lays onto the retina to create shapes is the a defining idea of mass drawing. They are both drawing, the distinction is largely in the thinking. A thinner mark lends itself well to line drawing and a bigger mark towards mass drawing, but this is not a set in stone rule and both can be utilized in both. There's another point I want to make, but I'm not sure I have the ability to articulate it. Both ideas utilize the same tools/fundamentals of shape/proportions, value, and colour. While there has been a distinction between the two, they are more like yin yang. Complementary to one another and not opposites. Drawing is the vehicle in which they are expressed. The same as hot and cold are representative of temperature. Neither exist without the other. Painting is just drawing with a bigger mark, and drawing is solely shapes, values, and color. You're not wrong in thinking that line might be less pronounced when mass drawing, however it depends entirely on how you want the drawing to feel like when observed. Line weight is just one property of a mark that changes the feeling of the subject you're representing. Not to mention that lines can be made without physically being present. Your composition is made of both line and mass, implied lines created by the shapes you've organized. Both philosophies developed to high degrees can produce similar outcomes. There's plenty of depth to find if you're looking.

skipped the usual warmup and jumped right into the project, which was to do a master study of line art. these are two drawings from Heinrich Kley and a Hogarth hand
not used to trad so I kept running out of space and stuff, and it was hard to know whether to focus on observational accuracy or just trying to mimic the lines, but using a ballpoint feels really nice, will keep doing these
next 3 days I've gotta catsit for someone, so it'll be 3 days of nothing but me and drawing. I'll report back on Monday with hopefully a shitload of drawings in tow

Ok maybe part of it is my own unreasonable standards. I can’t find a single simplified line drawing of a frontal view of a skull that I’m 100% happy with. Not even hide’s. Fully rendered drawings yes, but the simplified line drawings always have at least one minor flaw. I think even simplified construction plans should look beautiful. I’m playing around with it until I can get it to look right

yes.
the person that sold this painting has 6 sold paintings. all ranging several hundred euros. theyre just a student too, mind you.
the painting is not terrible aesthetic-wise but it clearly lacks fundamentals. would be clowned if they associated themselves with anything near "/int/"

there are much worse artists on the site
who sold a lot of stuff, i checked. its usually "abstraction" obscuring a total lack of drawing fundamentals.

>>8008611
delusionally picking one of the few okay artists on the site. most of them suck, you just dont want your 4chan worldview to crumble that only high skill artists can make money. theres no justice of skill like that. its all about connections and shilling your stuff in the right circles.

What a great series. The language is incredibly rich. I don't know how influential her work or this particular style of abstraction is, but I see a lot of cliches and visual motifs that I've also seen in manga, games, and advertising. It's worth studying for the visual language alone, thanks.

Even if this is not what you were asking I will lore dump a bit. I was thinking about whether these girls are real or not. And it seems from the back that Pink-head is at least heavily augmented. Since Pink-head is more meek and Yellow Cape is more actiony, it seems like Yellow Cape is more confrontational to the world, or the world is confrontational to her. So, maybe she is an outsider or something, while Pink-head looks more like a part of it. So, I decided Pink-head is probably not 'a real boy' but just girl-shaped. So I depicted her revealingly not real, and also self-reliant. So, to answer the question, she is a non-sexual doll, Barbie-like, just girl-shaped for an unknown reason. she doesn't have anything down there, if that wasn't already clear. Not sure how much human Yellow Cape is.

Cute work! I think the main point of the book is to prioritize believability over realism in order to get the idea across. for example, I noticed a lot of inaccurate ellipses in the book, such as the snare/drum. But I find the simplification really valuable.

So since the same balding clique retards want to keep the ppm getting lower and lower without offering new posters any critique or attention i will write a guide on far better options for the 2-3 new people that are still here so they can stop using this board.

Basically it boils down to avoid using beg / 4chan for critique and only use it as a dumping ground. No drawpile Either

Magma communities, Discord communities, online communities, Posting actual art in X and in deviant art.

Thoughts about it? I mean it's obvious that not that many new people are here but let's try to avoid directing newfriends into the eternal circlejerk trap.
