Illustrations aren't the same as internal comic art. You can hold up illustrations next to comic internal art and wonder why it can't look like that all day, in the end it's pointless because illustration art just doesn't really work as internal art for comics. Just look at Alex Ross's internal art. It's pretty, sure, but it's distractingly so, such that it takes away from the act of reading the comic. I would never prefer to read something as beautifully painted as Alex Ross's illustrations over functional, easy to read internal art if I want to actually follow and be engaged by the story and characters.Not to say that there isn't room for improvement, that is. Just that comparing apples to oranges won't get us anywhere.

Comics are interesting because you can take them decade by decade and track the decline in draftsmanship. And yes, anime and manga are also on the decline, but maybe 20 years behind comics. Comics are dogshit now, anime and manga don't look much better.
