Crumb is unironically more talented than most working artists today, he can't erase shit in his chosen medium

If you didn't pop a boner solely for the quality of the cross hatching you're terminally NGMI
>>
>>8008475
This looks more like he's just copying from a photo, which doesn't feel nearly as novel as earlier work.
>>
>>8008870
Could be. Fans would send him pictures and he would publish his recreations.
>>
it was so easy to make it back then, so no I am not "crumbpilled"
>>
Anyone have the Criterion version of Crumb?

I might be in the deleted scenes.

:D

Deeply Crumbpilled. I have all the sketchbooks, a smattering of single issues, and a few of the collections. What makes him great is he studied the rendering and form of artists like Thomas Nast and brings it into the second half of the 20th Century. He also appreciates huge asses and thick legs, I admire that.

It's from his 'Art & Beauty' series of books, which are primarily studies from photographs. Some are photos he took of his wife Aline and his girlfriend Carol Vinson, and some are based on photos girls sent him that wanted to be drawn in his style.

You know how many underground cartoonists there were? They didn't have the work ethic, talent or persistence of Crumb, so they fell by the wayside. Just a cursory glance at all the shitty undergrounds would clue you in why Crumb made it big and others didn't.

how did this scene die? The internet? Or corporations?

>how did this scene die? The internet? Or corporations?
It was dead long before the Internet was mainstream, basically morphed into the Alternative Comics scene of the 80's long before that. What killed the undergrounds was the "stagflation" of the 1970's, where costs were dramatically rising, but unemployment was at an all-time high. It became less economically viable for underground comix to survive when everything including printing and distribution were skyrocketing in price, and nobody could make decent money off printing underground comix anymore. Also local police in Southern states and more conservative districts started busting head shops for carrying comix behind the counter as "obscenity", which scared a lot of shop owners from even wanting to carry underground comix.

what are some of the best lesser known underground artists. Mine would be vaughn bode. He was basically the david bowie of comics. Amazing cartoonist

>Mine would be vaughn bode.
Vaughn Bodē is not "lesser known", he was in fact one of the most famous ones, even had his comics published by mainstream book publishers like Dell, and continues to have a huge influence on graffiti artists. The only reason he isn't more well known today is because he died prematurely from autoerotic asphyxiation.

>what are some of the best lesser known underground artists.
Rory Hayes, his artwork is crude, but his comics feel like the fever dream of a psychotic child who was regularly abused. Unsurprisingly, he died from years of drug abuse.
