What makes him great is he studied the rendering and form of artists like Thomas Nast and brings it into the second half of the 20th Century. What killed the undergrounds was the "stagflation" of the 1970's, where costs were dramatically rising, but unemployment was at an all-time high. It became less economically viable for underground comix to survive when everything including printing and distribution were skyrocketing in price, and nobody could make decent money off printing underground comix anymore. Also local police in Southern states and more conservative districts started busting head shops for carrying comix behind the counter as "obscenity", which scared a lot of shop owners from even wanting to carry underground comix.
