Is 24 too late to become a great digital artist? I wasn't born with "it" but lately I've been feeling like this want I want to do with my life.

But I fear that I will not be able to make it because I wasn't one of those kids that started out young.

Can I make it?

I'm afraid you're 1 year away before your neuroplasticity in the brain begins to solidify, rendering learning new things much more difficult than if you were, say, underageb&. It's so over for you.

>>
>>8014425
You've been an adult for less than 6 years, get a grip. Even if you live in Nigeria, you've got at least 30 years to get good at drawing. You'll only need 2000 hours of dedicated work and studies, which sounds like a massive amount of work, but it's roughly two years of 2 to 3 hours a day of drawing and having fun. After the first 2000 hours, drawing which is enough to completely solidify the fundamentals, discovering techniques and tips to add to your workflow will become much easier to do.

Also, you can learn to draw big tittie anime babes within four months of watching Korean/Japanese YouTube tutorials. It's not that difficult to do, to be honest. Most people forget that learning can be boring, but it's the difference between watching a two hour lecture on drawing vs a ten minute Jazza video on "how to become a master at drawing with only ten minutes a day!" type of crap. Guess which one you'll learn the most from?

art requires time and dedication, if you have those, just pick a course so you'll have a structured learning pathway and in 2 or 3 years you'll master fundamentals and maybe even developing your own style

also, you're still very young, lots of free energy to pump on learning

You're only revealing that you either haven't drawn for 2000 hours yet or can't see the difference between faux anime and the real deal and thus severely misjudge the difficulty. It's understandable if you're just starting out but when you get there you will realize it's not that big of a number, still nothing to scoff at tho and much closer to the goal.

5000 hours is reasonable to be decent at a specialized approach that suits you best or to be decent at pixel art.

why would anyone take a westoid's opinion on what is real or faux anime seriously

>>
>>8014618
Faux vs real anime isn't a mere social distinction tho. It's an objective and provable difference in drawing styles. So it doesn't matter, you can learn to see it as a westerner.
>>

Your word is as good as theirs (worthless) with no work posted. Me? I'm just letting you know in case it slipped your mind ;)

You can make it. I started drawing at 23 and I've made a lot of progress since then. I'm still not as good as I want to be, but I know I'll get there so as long as I don't give up.

I will blackpill you, though. The biggest disadvantage of starting off in your 20s instead of your 10s is that you missed out on your copying phase that developed your observational drawing skills. Since you're just starting out, you really only have three options: either do the copying phase first, do what KeshArt, artwod, and Marc Brunet recommend (which is structured constructive drawing learning), or do your copying phase and then learn animation.

If you want results, you need to draw for at least 14 hours weekly and definitely lock down line quality and drawing basic forms and shapes. Do the DRSB exercises. Follow Marc Brunet's DRAW method or Jason Brubaker's Cognitive Drawing (Active Recall). Try your hand at basic sculpting.
>>
>>8014628
I don't care, I'm just letting an anon know because he asked to "give it to me straight". If he has the IQ to understand it then great, you never know who will read your posts either way.

Each path has its own ups and downs:

>copying phase: excellent for developing observational drawing skills and style, but you're gonna suck ass at drawing anything from imagination for a long time, and you need to copy a LOT in order to get rid of symbol drawing
>constructive drawing: you'll be able to draw anything from imagination, but it's REALLY grindy/tedious and cognitively taxing just to get there, and your drawings will still look like ass because you skipped out on observational drawing which means your visual library is empty

I personally recommend copying while also learning animation. It's the best of both worlds.

>>8014657
Practically no one except animators draws real anime and even then they adapt the style of the manga. Faux anime is a retarded concept born of /ic/ midwits.
>>
>>8014670
Illustrators use the same core tech. Manga has the biggest variance.

Faux anime isn't stuff that is simply not anime animation, it's a surface level low CR method of imitating anime by people who draw their idea of anime instead of anime. Saito talks about it.

If you can't tell the difference between westernized faux anime and between Japanese styles you need to raise your CR levels immediately.
>>
>>8014679
Yes the concept of faux anime is born of the mistaken belief that the genre of western art that leans into anime tropes without committing somehow represents a problem that a newgen beg would run into and have to overcome to reach the imaginary holy land of true anime. Meanwhile in reality it's all anime now for begs to the point of renouncing the western fundamentals that all of eastern art is also based on. If you ever investigate what the japs use to learn it's Loomis all the way down and any good anime artist is a master of realism.
>>
>>8014688
It's not about using some epic learning methods but a lack of technical knowledge. Faux anime is literally anime lacking core shape design and linework things mixed with western fine art tech or cartoon tech to make up for the lack. It's not a conscious choice but an inability to do anime.

Pick up Saito or something, it's going to raise your CR levels from the life-threatingly low numbers you have right now.

Faux anime is born when American artists use manga art or anime stills as reference without taking the time to devotedly study and copy them.

You can look at popular fanart on social media for an example of this in action, especially when an artist compares their anime fanart to when they draw the characters on-model. It's like night and day.
>>
>>8014709
loomis means western masters in ic speak saito is fine but maybe consider that your internet daddy is simply regurgitating solved problems
>>
>>8014716
Western masters haven't solved anime because it didn't exist yet, they didn't invent its tech. This is just the contemporary west's inferiority complex towards Japan speaking as usual. Literal we wuz tier rhetoric trying to claim another culture's achievements as your own.
Loomis could pick up anime though and wouldn't be making these types of posts on /ic/ defending faux anime slop.

>>8014715
Yep, exactly. It's all about CR at the end of the day, only way to raise it is devoted study and copy and then creation of new things based on that knowledge. All taught by Saito.
>>
>>8014723
I'm not defending faux anime. I'm more so saying it barely exists. Most manga wouldn't pass you thinking it's faux anime if it wasn't made by a Japanese person. Like I said the problem of ic begs is not that they can't draw anime it's that they can't draw anything. The way to draw is to learn the basics (Loomis) after which, you can bolt anime on top if you wish, just like they do in Japan. CR is just the idea of your eye getting better but place, Japan.

>This is just the contemporary west's inferiority complex towards Japan speaking as usual
This is the crux of your delusion. Who on here is learning from FZD these days? He just gets faulted when mentioned. Everyone is learning anime but in their fervor they don't understand that all roads lead to Loomis. There is no western sentiment it just so happens to be that if you study like the Japanese you find it's all the same no matter what way you go. How you can misstep is by subscribing to the ideas and courses of these youtube grifters that want to sell you the tried and true information in inferior regurgitated fashion.

I believe faux-anime (the kind found in fanart) specifically happens because stylization is a complex process that Americans tend to skimp out on. Your artistic style is shaped by two sets of behavior: the art that you passively observe and look at (either for fun or for reference), and the art you meaningfully trace and copy. Both shape your visual memory.

If most of your visual memory (and immediate memory) is informed by American art (professional artwork and fanart that isn't studious enough), you end up with faux-anime. The average American artist on social media doesn't really commit themselves to obsessively copying Japanese pop art/manga art and by the time they've found themselves doing fanart of manga and anime, they've become too set in their ways without realizing it.

The ironic thing is that western artists DID invent the tech behind anime and manga-style art...sorta. Remember, Tezuka pioneered manga and anime but he was heavily referencing Disney comics and animated cartoons. Outside of kishotenketsu, the key difference between American comics and Japanese manga is that all manga is rooted in Tezuka transforming Japanese comics into Japanese animated storyboards.

An issue with faux-anime is that many artists don't bother to learn how to animate so their methods of storyboarding/paneling have more to do with Sunday comics, superhero comics (although this is changing in recent years), and graphic novels/capeshit deliberately trying to be more cinematic in presentation.
>>
>>8014836
>DID invent the tech behind anime and manga-style art
This is a common pro-western talking point that's not really true. Having shared history is not the same thing as inventing the techniques that form the core of the styles today (which did not exist in disney and were invented solely by anime). I do fully agree with everything else you've said.

It's a term coined by Mr. Saito in his book "The Fastest Way to Improve your Illustration by Naoki Saito" to explain how lower skilled people underestimate the complexity of anime and have low ability to see the differences in anime designs. He shows how to fix this in the book, basically everyone starts from some degree of low CR, though the contemporary west has shown levels previously considered impossible.
>>
>>8014853
... I like Saitou and I generally agree that drawing anime authentically is usually better aesthetically but Jesus Christ you really need to have better fucking arguments than that retarded buzzword meme and constantly name dropping Naoki. Please stick to drawing instead of opening your monkey brain mouth
>>
>>8014860
How is it not a good argument? It's a legitimate term and you getting emotional about it with no arguments yourself won't make the west look any better.
If even one person picks up Mr. Saito's book and ends up doing real anime as a result, my mission is done. The current western paradigm will fall from within by our efforts.
>>
>>8014745
>>8014844
>>8014853
The reasons why the American faux-anime style falls flat mostly boil down to composition, the shape of the eyes, the lack of commitment to a single artist's style, constant animation, and having too much detail.

Remember, anime/manga-style art is literally rooted in Disney cartoons and comic storyboards but with conservative line economy, while the actual animation itself is typically reserved for "sakuga" moments.

Faux-anime is in an awkward space because the desire for hyper-individualism means style and line economy are radically different between studios and artists as a whole, but everyone is still expected to conform to the overall pipeline which borrows some of classic Disney's techniques (constant animation) but abandons the rest (big and expressive eyes, lack of commitment to an artist's style, minimal detail, striking composition) that Japan adopted and cultivated. Conformity to a style still ends up happening: not because of artistic vision, but in order to not go over budget while still preserving constant animation at the same time, hence the strange relationship between the constant animation and the amount of detail seen in faux-anime. Things are more expensive but end up looking cheaper and gradually stilted across shots as a result.

I don't really have an answer as to why the sheer amount of detail in character designs is specifically a thing in American faux-anime. It's possible such a thing is being done as a means of distinguishing itself from children's cartoons or contemporary adult animation, but it feels counter-productive as it just bloats the budget and comes across as not understanding the principles behind anime.

Mr. Saito didn't even know how powerful this concept would be for the west's development, but here we are.
>>
>>8014867
>minimal detail
>line economy
This is only partially true, it's just that in anime (settei specifically, inking can vary) the line detail is heavily compressed and is extremely subtle if you don't know what you're looking at, anime allows you to have extremely expressive and complex shapes while still appearing simple on the surface. It quite literally is high cognitive resolution art.

You can compare and contrast Netflix DMC to the DMC anime for an example of what I mean.

Netflix Dante has a LOT more detail in his clothes and shows excessive line economy while lacking dynamic lighting/shading, and has more individual frames on display as he eats his food. Note how his sundae is sparsely detailed and how his body language emphasizes his mouth.

Anime Dante has less frames, less detail in his clothes, and modest line economy, but has the dynamic lighting and shading that his American counterpart lacks while his sundae has lots of detail. His body language emphasizes his eyes and his posture.
>>
>>8014876
Isn't settei supposed to be as basic and simple as possible? You know, so that animators can start working with them?

forgot to add, but Netflix Dante's facial expression literally has an expressive raised brow (think Dreamworks!) but the actual energy of the eyes is lacking in terms of expressiveness. >People don't appreciate muh anime style
>This must mean they are low resolution thinkers
No.. It's because the miniscule differences don't really matter. To someone that doesn't draw anime, all anime characters have stiff same-face. Anime is standardized so that gook #15826 can draw it the same as any other gook. And this is why AI can make anime pictures that satisfy 95% of normies. Coping about muh style differences doesn't make it high art like the underappreciated paintings he's referencing.
>>
>>8014880
They're supposed to be a comprehensive guide that teaches you how to correctly draw the characters in the style, it's not basic at all in terms of the skill that goes into creating it. The people who draw them are usually the more experienced staff in anime.
It appears simple because nothing is happening in the drawing like in actual "sakuga moments", but the drawing tech is very hard to replicate but still very subtle so as to appear simple. All the things that character designers do in the settei are the main reason for the anime look that netflix dmc etc. lack.
>>
>>8014894
i think you are just retarded.
>>
>>8014892
That's the entire point of Mr. Saito, for the low CR normie it is all the same. For the artist who cultivates his CR even "miniscule" differences irrelevant to the slop-consuming normie are important and are what allow him to draw the things that the normie can't, even when the normie thinks it's all the same.

Music is a really good example of this because a lot of producers make their best stuff in their teens and in college. They just download a DAW and within a year or two they're making hits. A lot of talented people think drawing just requires practice because you do have to put in a lot of work to develop things like line quality and style. So they fall into this trap where they think people that suck just haven't put in the work. But 90% of the time, someone that's good at drawing could already copy from reference and draw relatively accurate 3d shapes on day 1. It might not be pretty but the signs that they can think in 3d will be there.

Anon, when people say they hate when people tell them "Anyone can do x", it's because their expectation of "doing x" is the upper echelon of "x". Like when someone on twitter says they can't draw and hate people telling them "Anyone can draw!", they mean "I will never draw as well as ultra popular Japanese big booba ultra render anime artist that gets 1m likes on every post". In which case, they are probably correct. Everyone with legs can run but not everyone will be able to compete with Usain Bolt. Obviously most of them realize they can undergo the humiliation ritual of scribbling out /beg/shit for the rest of their lives, but most people don't have the ego to tolerate that.

Yeah there's definitely something to that as well. I read someone here call it "skill inflation" once, which I like. The idea that normalfags are now inundated with professional art they scroll past in 5 seconds all day that anything lower than that might as well be chris chan tier. If these same people were on 2007 deviantart instead of 2026 xitter I think a lot of tunes might change, but that's not a time we live in anymore

And did you start at 36 or were you drawing your entire life, you fucking faggot?!

He really just renamed 'attention to detail'

People here really got vaporized by Cognitive Resolution because it so succintly defines the problem of stembrained nodraws that plague this board. You have people here who can't tell the difference between two different animes lecturing you about how shitty anime is. They think its shitty because they dont understand it, and they won't understand it because they think its shitty. This seems simple enough but usually people don't have the level of self reflection needed to be able to step back and say "I dont know what I'm talking about even if I don't like the subject".

Drawing REQUIRES some level of introspection so these people are already doomed which makes it even sadder. If they could tell Sailor Moon from Yu Yu Hakusho then they would be able to get better at drawing.

@Grok, summarize this post.

>They think its shitty because they dont understand it
I don't like anime because I don't consume it. When I look at an anime character, I just see circles and triangles. Like an emotionless emoji. I can tell the difference between different styles, but I feel no connection to it. Appreciation of anime requires consumption because it relies heavily on dialogue to communicate the character's inner thoughts and feelings, as they all have the same emotionless face. You have consumed so much anime that you've developed an emotional connection to these various styles through conditioning. This is why you're spamming this thread with these frustrated posts. You simply cannot empathize with non-weebs that don't have this conditioning.
>>
>>8015742
not being able to feel a connection to a drawn person, means YOU have the mental issue. You can't look past the embarrassement of how cutesey and perverted anime is.
>>

>drawn person
You can barely call anime this. They are symbolic of people. If you don't understand this you are severely autistic. Again, they communicate no emotion through their faces because anime artists value consistency and style over expression. They do this so a whole team of guys can draw the same character tens of thousands of times.

Bro i wished i started 24, that's still young as fuck... you are fine.

Actual autism and dunning kruger low CR. Cognitive resolution really was the final blow needed to end the west's reign of terror on imageboards, now nobody can look past the actual lack of substance in everything they say about anime. Well done, Mr. Saito.
>>

Sums it up perfectly. Usually these types know nothing about the subject of actually drawing anime but they feel this burning desire to debate it with people who can clearly destroy them on every single point. An incredible display of dunning kruger.

>Drawing REQUIRES some level of introspection so these people are already doomed which makes it even sadder.
It's ironic that drawing anime would make you leagues better at drawing anything else too because it's extremely demanding in terms of your cognitive resolution.

>>8015812
I first thought it might be an EOP issue because he's reading subs instead of looking at the screen, but then I realized he's most definitely consuming d*bs so yeah, it is actual low tier dunning kruger autism behavior.

this literally hs nothing to do with how expressive it is or isn't. Thats a value judement on how hard anime artists work.

Even his best work is aping other, more successful illustrators - really obviously trying to be like Yoneyama Mai without being anywhere near her level. He would be a literal who if not for his youtube grift.

If you have to invent a term like CR and constantly educate the public on it, it should be obvious that you're coping. Pointing out the fact that some people can't tell anime apart doesn't make it high art. Doesn't matter how many meme words you can cram into a post, anime is dirty, standardized slop designed to shit out an episode every week.
>>
>>8015847
Art education is actually a good thing, especially in today's climate of slop being prevalent. Thankfully Mr. Saito is doing his job pretty well and even westerners can access anime drawing much more easily than before.
>Pointing out the fact that some people can't tell anime apart doesn't make it high art.
It means those people lack an objective and measurable skill that people who draw anime have. It wouldn't matter in an everyday slop consumption context that you're disabled when it comes to understanding art, but on an art board that's incredibly disconcerting. It's just like that anon said, this isn't even about anime anymore, but about having the self-reflection to understand high level art in general detached from personal tastes clouding your judgement, a skill that's becoming nonexistent in the west.
You can actually prove it's high level art because it's not easily replicable without extreme effort. If it was "slop" everyone in the west who likes anime would be doing high CR anime, but they're not. You not being high enough CR to see this is just self-reporting that you're a lower tier artist.

>Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere.
This was literally the whole plot of Ratatouille. Even pixar knows this to be true. It's like saying "anyone can become a doctor" but leave out the part that retards can't even tie their own shoe laces without it being a battle of wits and deception.
It's not about talent or work ethics, those are wishy-washy at best to define, and anyone can draw for hours and hours and learn nothing.
It's about which degree of mental retardation you suffer from. If it's too much, you'll barely make progress.

that's not what he wants to hear, he wants us to all say "yes, it's over", then he can give up again and go back to masturbating and playing games.

>>8015967
Except even Ratatouille undercuts its own message because Remy has some amazing palate that allows him to taste flavor notes other people can't. Literally a talent whore

I started when i was 34 two years ago. OP is a zoomer, probably will never make it anyway because of their shitty mentality and never really pushing themselves 0 discipline.

Do you have any recommendations for drawing lectures? The only thing my algorithm recommends me is mark brunet.
>>
>>8017176
Yeah, i guess you are right. It's easier to talking yourself from attempting something then actually trying.
