Can any aspect of art be “beautiful” in any objective sense? If sense and beauty arouses a viewer to feel pleasure or angst, are they responding to the art object or the subjective aspects of the artwork and its interpretation.

The artist is the arbiter of what counts as “beautiful”. The artist’s job is to draw out the beauty in things that previously went unnoticed. To see what others cannot.

I do believe there is such a thing as objective beauty primitives in art. This is true for humans of any time period and culture due to evolution. For example, art needs a certain order to it to be considered beautiful. Something with structure will always be more beautiful than goo. Contrast may be another beauty primitive. You can say something subversive like Jason Pollock is beautiful, but you're really saying the concept is beautiful not the actual art just imo.

>in any objective sense?
It depends one whether or not there are things that are objectively beautiful -- though I believe so.
I think most would look at a lake surrounded by nature, or a mountain bathed in the hue of a waning sun, or a person who draws all eyes because of their looks, and they would say that "yes that is beautiful".
So if there is objective beauty, then surely there can be art that can also be objectively beautiful? And if a piece of art is objectively beautiful, surely its objective beauty can illicit emotions purely through said beauty in the same way those prior examples can?

Of course, it seems difficult to create art that is objectively beautiful, compared to art that is subjectively beautiful, which is art that just appeals to the tastes of a much smaller group rather than everyone.
Even simply making art capturing the likeness of those beautiful examples will oft likely be just be beautiful based on subjective opinion rather than objective.

I'll answer your question with another question: is pepper objectively spicy, or subjectively spicy?

the spiciness of the food is clearly objective. what is subjective, is if you happen to like spicy food or not, not whether the food itself is spicy.

Likewise, all beautifulness, cuteness, and various other kinds of appealingness are all objective patterns, who can deny this? Spacial location is objective, patterns are objective. Aren't beautiful things the patterns of stuff in space? Its comprised entirely out of objective qualities, so it's objective. When an object has a particular type of form, it will evoke feelings that it is beautiful, or cute, or whatever. But One's aptitude to feel a ton of excitement at cute things is what is what differs from person to person, THAT is what is subjective.

In this view therefore, you cannot rightly say kittens are not cute, kittens objectively and factually are cute, for kittens are (generally speaking) objectively in the form of a cute thing. You COULD rightly say that you are not affected much by their cuteness, but you could not be right saying it is not a cute thing, anymore than a blind man could be right saying that light is actually really darkness, due to his eyes only seeing darkness when looking at light.

if you don't feel much looking at beautiful things, it is not that it isn't beautiful, rather, you're just blind to that particular type of beauty. Everyone is a little darkened to certain beauties, and others see it's radiance more clearly. That's why our tastes are different. Yet, even when we cannot percieve the beauty ourselves, we still form so much universal agreement in what is good or bad, for we still know its objective qualities, and can "just kinda tell" it would be good if we could see it.

Objective and subjective are very annoying words to find the right definition for. you have use the words like this or nothing works.

oh yeah i know. one of the 10 or something mistakes i counted after i was done. the road to perfection is a long one, even just for observation. i really like the hair/head though and that was almost 2+ hours alone
