An advanced artist has a high level spatial model within their mind and when they draw, they're essentially doing shorthand via symbols of those models. The end results look similar, but the way they came about it and the things happening in the brain are vastly different. If you were to scan the brain of a beginner vs a pro you'd see completely different regions lighting up.
