>>8022590I would recommend lowering the contrast and value of the background as you can barely see the distinction between foreground and background. It took me a while to figure out red is the background and what it was showing and I still can't figure out where the blue ropes are connecting to. Is it the red background or the golden steak in the midground.

This is a sequel to a drawing I did 3 years ago prior to a schizophrenic episode. Based off a dream about an anime OVA focused purely on highschool girls dying of natural causes. This one had an aneurysm.

I come to /draw/ in a time of great struggle. Been trying to figure out how faces work. I am terrible with faces - I can't recognize them in real life, and my damaged eyesight means I was never able to pick up on them when I was young, so I'm kind of always reliant on a mirror when I'm drawing faces. But then I look at the mirror and the faces I draw, and they look like different species. Left is how I usually draw them and right is a revision based on a book I enjoy.>eyes shrunk about 25% so they're 1/5th the width of the head>eyes moved inward to compensate for the shrinking, so they're still one width apart>cheek bones raised so they end level with the tip of the nose rather than at the philtrumI ended up not redrawing the mouth, but I'm really struggling to shape it just so; it's very easy to make lips too pronounced if you line the full shape. Good lips require a lot of subtle fading of the pen to represent the softer flesh sinking into the face. The hair needs a full redraw, but it's not a high priority. The trouble I keep running into is that I consistently find left just more appealing than right, even though right is more accurate. It feels like right is an alien and the left one is more real - but it still doesn't look like a human. It looks like a rendition of a human done by an alien.
>>8026103sorry but, while the eye socket may be accirate, the cheekbone is definitely too prominent on the right side, are you referencing some dolled up bimbo?
>>8022581i don't know how people draw limbs in perspective without drawing cylinders. gj
>>8023596Nice lines.
>>8026296I was playing around with them a lot, but never found a size I liked. Looking now, I'd definitely slim them horizontally to give them a less pronounced curve.

>>8027976>>8026103move on from this drawing.trying to get everything just right on a single drawing at your current level is a waste of time.Right now. leave it behind you, pick another (better) reference photo, draw it to the best of your ability for 20-30 minutes, after times up, take 10 minutes to see what you didn't get right and try to readjust to the best of your ability.then move on from that too, pick another reference, and work on that too, rinse and repeat and try to internalize all the lessons you learned on the adjustment phase into your workflow.
>>8028212To be clearI haven't just been working on this nonstop for several daysI've been doing other things in between and sometimes coming back to it, hoping to learn a bit more. But it's done! On to the next one
>>8026103I'm a mere /beg/let but being a retard with faces (and human bodies in general), I can relate somewhatSome thoughts:* Do you have the same problems when drawing different angles? A perfectly straight front-view is always weird, I mean how often do you actually see that. Maybe it's just that that the human face looks weird in that mechanical angle; and you're not that far off.* Is realism your goal? Considering that your eyes are already exaggerations, if you mix realism with exaggeration it tends to get uncanny (margaret keane). So if you want those eyes, maybe that cheek / nose / mouth / jaw is not what you actually want, and you need to figure out different forms and proportions that you like.* Do you have success in drawing heads that you like when using tone? Line drawing is a even more distant abstraction from the full description (which is easier represented with line & tone)... So when you haven't figured out how to draw likeable heads with line & tone yet, it's probably harder to succeed with line alone.
>>8028553 (cont)Anyways, I've been taking classes with Gnass recently and had some shower thoughts about what progress constitutes for me right now.... perhaps it's useful to someone; otherwise it's just me bloggingWhen you start cursing yourself out because everything you put down looks weird and you start adjusting things randomly, then you probably are getting lost in details (a black hole) and need to take a step back. What am I trying to create? Does my general model account for this?(The general model being the single imaginative figure you hold in your head about what makes up an human - proportions, anatomy, mechanics, constructions, all the good stuff. You always carry it around and work on it all your life.)If my general model is wrong or lacking something, then i need to fix it, otherwise i can't expect my characters (= specific models) to work. I need to identify conceptual turds so I can throw them out instead of polishing them.In the case of heads, maybe i need to get back and study head constructions again - Loomis or whatever. Maybe i want different structures for my facial features*. Or maybe I need to revisit what i already learned about but did not really internalize properly.Perhaps being a retard who can't remember people by their face and doesn't know what human bodies do can help, starting with less wrong assumptions in the beginning. I hope so. *(I like Brian Knox's facial features, which he largely derived from Bridgman. But do not trust him for anything else, he's a Watts Atelier Xerox machine)Also, another thought I had: people who say "start with X years of observational drawing before you start drawing from imagination" can get fucked, holy shit. That stunts growth worse than drawabox. At least drawabox /beg/s can rotate their boxes. Just because you wasted years does not mean that everyone else should.>>8028246Excited to see how she'll put her mouth to use! Eventually I'll try myself at some fan art.... for sure....

>>8020625i think the poses are overall mood are okay but it seems tthe values are kinda messy and doesn't let the silhouettes be read more clearly, any feedback pls?
>>8028885It's pretty hard to make characters so smushed together and make their poses read, so kudos for trying. My suggestions are - make the guy in the front darker, and the one being pushed more affected by the light below, to separate them better. I also created a bit of separation between them by moving away the coat from the gap between their bodies. And just for fun, I made the coat shape a bit more dramatic, to emphasise how he's really falling back. And I darkened the building on the left, to de-emphasise it a bit. I'm not a professional, so take this with a grain of salt. The head area is just completely unreadable, unfortunately. I don't know what these characters actually look life, so I don't know how I'd fix it. I'm not even completely sure where the heads are exactly lol. Limited color palettes like this are a pretty big challenge, maybe you could help yourself out by adding just one more hue to separate things, like a teal or something.
>>8025182I like the warm lighting, but along with the super strong grain effect, it makes the characters look like they're being microwaved lol
I've had the sudden urge to actually learn to paint digitally, so I copied this reference for an hour. I didn't trace the reference or use the colorpicker. Thinking about it, this isn't a good reference to learn from, since it has a lot of really subtle shadow transitions that are a bit hard to do. It looks fine when I squint, but I think I went too hard on the purple and orange, he looks a bit bruised haha. I also went too hard on the darker edges, now that I'm looking at it. But overall, I think I managed to make the torso look quite 3D, which is an achievement by itself.
>>8029008woa, thank you very much! It does read much better now. It's always hard to me when the light is very bright and the poses are harder to shade right because of that. Oh yeah It's understandable the head part, here's what was going on. I appreciate the feedback very much

>>8022555very nice and appealing.>>8023821cool design and brush work>>8023952that looks great. do you also paint with other media?great values and anatomy. I need to figure this out..That's an old illustration I want to finish, but I am unsure about the composition. The dwarf is in the dead centre, but the green stone is drawing the attention to the left. Does it work like that?
>>8025106>great values and anatomy. I need to figure this out..that was meant for you.
>>8029237Done quick and dirty and not sure if this is better or not but if this is just how id do it If i want more attention on dwarf.I'd have the background mountain structure wrap around into the foreground to add more darker values to it then I'd put the gem in that dark value group with the dwarf in the light value group to draw more attention to him. And i also wouldn't add toi much detail or at least obscure the detail on the rocky patch i added to so most details (thus attention) stays on dwarf
>>8029237>>8029239Thank you!>do you also paint with other media?I do not, can’t really afford it at the moment, but I want to soon. I’m trying to get better at drawing from imagination so I can make money off my art.
>>8029247oh wow thank you. that's probably already a better composition.
I'm taking a risk not posting this in /beg/.... Tell me what you guys think.. be nice please
>>8029535i think it's an interesting piece with a cool topic. i love the designs of the characters! as for the perspective, it seems it could benefit more from 1 point perspective and exaggerating more the size contrast between the night and the dragon (sorry i never drew dragons). the composition, while i think works fine, i think could be pushed more in favor of a more closed up and narrow crop (just my suggestion though). it would also be interesting and engaging if the knight gave a sort of interaction with the dragon or the enviroment, like looking back at the dragon or looking out for enemies
>>8029535I like the style and idea, but as the other anon said the drawing is a little flat, but well we're here to learn on how to improve, keep on going! Also your style seems something that I'd find in a very enjoyable niche comic, so I hope you have similar plans

>>8029021You did good, yes I'd say you too hatd on the edges and also the lower abs are more defined and kess dark than what you rendered but good effort nonetheless
new shit
Drawing on my phone is a lot easier using a phone-like aspect ratio, whudda thunkDoes anyone have any tips for knowing how to "finish" a piece?I feel I can very clearly imagine what the sketch then the lineart on this should look like but I always, always struggle when I go in to color because thats always feels vague and unclear to me. I end up wasting a lot of time trying this and that only to end up nowhere and the crux of it seems to be I don't know how to picture a piece in colorLike often times I can see a "vibe" but it isn't as clear as how I picture it in monochrome yk
Critique? I feel like my art lacks depth and shading but the reference i use doesn’t have clear lighting either, i also think my character is too plain looking. should i thicken the eyelashes for starters?
>>8031659If you paint /color anything like you sketch you know all this. For me, trying to plan color isn't the solution, it's more often compositional, and simply adding interest with a background, texture or lighting will remedy it. Having a story or at least a theme word for the piece can help you choose those elements, especially when you're mid-process.If you l prefer more empty comps, you need to get the lighting down. Color is secondary.

>>8031764I think you're focused on the wrong things. Those shoulders like giant, and those hands look tiny, and the legs look off. This needs a redline. If anything your shading in the best thing about this
