Where did the gothic stylistic choice of giving characters thin bodies and large undilated eyes come from?

tim bourbon
>>
It's just a cartoony stylization of the way people like Peter Murphy and Robert Smith looked like in their prime.

Gotta be mostly him yeah. Invader Zim is also an early and very popular example of this style
>>

Possibly even before him. The Adams family comics maybe?
Mortica was tall and thin, but didn't have the eyes, but other character such as uncle fester did -- so maybe they became the starting point of this stuff in terms of being an artistic, taste, and tonal influence?
Was there even an earlier example of 'goth' media, before the adams family comics in 1938?

Because it looks ghoulish

Silent Era horror is the patient zero for the goth look aesthetic.

Going off on what Burton himself stated his inspirations were, his artstyle is a mix of Disney, Roahl Dahl, and Dr. Seuss influence combined with inspiration various gothic media and German expressionist pieces.

While I don’t think Jhonen Vasquez has ever outright stated his visual influences, his art a clear mix of Tim Burton, street art, and Spumco/Ren & Stimpy influence.

You also can’t convince me that Hideshi Hino didn’t influence Jhonen.

German expressionism
>>
Romanticism and etchings, German Expressionism, Edward Gorey, Tim Burton, Invader Zim - in that historical order
>>
>call it gothic
>look inside
>it's just a standard cartoon
and to answer the question one guy did it and everybody just copied.

>Edward Gorey
He's an important link that keeps getting forgotten. Burton's scratchy ink lines are clearly a stylistic element lifted from Gorey's work.
>>
I wonder what Tim Burton would think of Invader Zim
>>
>>8021959
I’d be kinda shocked if he hadn’t commented on it somewhere already

He only likes really old shit.
