Does the strategy of becoming a popular twitter/social media artist first before releasing any sort of webcomic/manga (or indie game and similarly made mediums for that matter) online ever works out?

Even if you actually start working you story years later it was actually conceived, you could have some unique advantages like one or two story arcs already fully scripted waiting to be made, way more developed art skills than the average nobody who goes for webcomics straight away from day 1, and so on

There’s truly no way to guarantee the success of a new project, but, establishing a reputation in existing community will give you a seed audience who might be interested in seeing your original work

when has that ever been a strategy

It'll obviously get some eyeballs, but you're right, people who just enjoy your art, or even art of your characters interacting, may have little interest in reading full chapters or entire comics about your characters -- they're different mediums after all.

I think the best method is to just start uploading your comic to social media. It's difficult, because social media is shit to upload comics to, and you'll have to adjust the pages and panels to suit it, but I think that's the best way to go about it.

Look at the Racist Elf comic author, his fame is entirely from his various comics, and seemingly entirely from twitter.
If you want to tell more serious stories, the format will be a bigger burden, but that's the cost for the biggest possible audience.

... I imagine scott mccloud weeps every time someone has to work around the restrictions of each website to upload their webcomic... the 'infinite canvas' indeed.

it doesnt work, but thats assuming the comic is shit, which is usually is. Lets say its good, then it still won't work because we're past the era of the internet where good things rise to the top. It actually ended a while ago and we're like 3 eras past it. This is the AI slop era, your comic is buried under algorithms designed to push ai and instant gratification crap. It can't know if your comic is good because if people go to the site to read it, it doesn't boost the algorithm.

you need an audience or a marketing budget otherwise no one will see it
>>
Just create your own comic or manga, upload it anywhere, delete it and make sure no trace of it has ever existed digitally
Now voil'a! You elaborated lost media! Now normies will scratch and lose their heads finding it and gaining popularity after a decade or two
You can leverage that or blame those niggers for not giving that comic/manga attention and keep that manga/comic lost
That's what I am doing btw
