I stopped trying to pursue art in the 2010's cause i felt so disillusioned with my ability and progress. Now I’m decrepit and calcifying with a completely different career and trying to get back into it as a hobby.I bought a sketchbook and dusted off an old pen tablet. I'm not sure where I am with my skill level, but could I get feedback on this sketch. It looks off but I feel blind to what it is.

I DID MY TIMEAND I WANT OUT
Does anyone have any recommendations for other communities that offer mutual critique? Maybe I'm misremembering from when i used to post here, but the board feels very different
>>8026252What did it used to be like?Your art is nice, better than most of the board, but the nose makes me believe that you really didn't draw for 10 years lel. Time capsule
>>8026252You're a little too late there, tumblr bro. Operation Anime Takeover has been successful the past 10 years.
>>8026252Different how?I’ve been here for 8 years and I feel like it’s mostly the same outside of more anime and less concept art
>>8026275the bar has been lowered by a lot, back then most generals had at least 3 or 4 good artists
>>8026288Have you considered you could be one of those "good artists" you speak of and raise the bar singlehandedly? No, no, no...to difficult. It's better to be a whiney complainer.
>>8026302I am tho, I do post my work often, I do try to help, but it is what it is anon
>>8026288I think the AVERAGE skill level has gone up even though most of the truly experienced pro artists have left. But we only ever had a small handful of those anyway so it’s not that big of a deal imo
>>8026258>>8026275I was last active around 2011- 14 on here. It feels there was a larger range of skill proficiency and subject matter back then that was a big motivator and inspiration for me. I remember the big threads on value painting, environmental/landscape, constructive redline drawovers (people redlining redlines!) the general constructive dialogue. There were named users of questionable reputation and humour which cultivated a board identity/community that I can't really seem to describe. Of course there's always been shitters and trolls.I remember a conversation with an anon when we discovered we seldom posted on the board but when we did, it was always happened to be around the same time and we'd always recognise each others style and give feedback. I don't know why I think about that a lot. I hope they found success. But maybe with how passionate I was about art back then and having found /ic/, it perhaps skews my perception and memory of how things feel different.
>>8026426Nah, the board has become an absolute shithole. I've been here since 2007 but damn it's gotten horible over the past 2 or 3 years. Sadly it's the best art community you're gonna get these days, with conceptart.org having self-destructed and everything else being either overrun by AI slop or teenagers. The Internet in general is dead.
>>8025989Draw a normal nose instead of that stupid retarded goblin nose.
>>8026426https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygI-2F8ApUMSorry. It's my solemn duty to listen to this song whenever I see Sir Adrien Brody.Nice art though and welcome back to the game. It has changed quite a bit around here, the art community in general has.
>>8026529I keep hearing this opinion on the board. What is the reasoning? Is it because of the ai panic in 2022 or did the captchas kill uncommon users and just let the howie powerusers shit it up?
>>8026899I'm going to click this, but I'm telling you now it better be BrodyQuest
>>8027136nta but the internet just sucks in general. i'm also just sporadically here now, where it was addiction before. they put too much babypowder in my smack, man.
>>8026426cool brody. very recongizeable
>>8026426That’s a fair point, the variety in types of works that get discussed here has gone down over time, you rarely see people post and critique landscapes for example. I think part of that is the board’s shift in focus towards manga/anime and internet commissions, you’re basically just drawing 1girl white_void for a lot of that type of work so that’s naturally what the board focuses on the most. You might have to do a landscape for movie concept art, but the guy who just wants to commission furry porn doesn’t care about what’s going on in the background. It’s probably also just a symptom of the board’s userbase shrinking overall. We’re on a bit of a rebound though, so maybe as more people come back then a greater variety of threads will crop up
>>8025989It's really fucking good, if you quit again I will find you and force you to draw every single day.
>>8026302All the /pro/ have left a while ago, now the board is filled with talentless /beg/
>>8026252dog is nicerest is meh
>>8026529This is depressing to read. The internet really isn't what it used to be. I think in general, we're also seeing this downward, almost degenerative trend across multiple and disparate strata of our lives, the most worrying being the declining literacy and critical thinking abilities amongst younger generations. But I'm probably extrapolating beyond the scope here though.>>8027732I don't think the focus on anime is all that bad. It's a huge draw into the creative field for many younger or future artists, some whose styles and interests might naturally branch out and evolve with maturity. I do think you brought up a really good point however, about internet commissions shuttling people down the cynical pipeline of porn in the white void. Capitalism truly is the root of all decay. Hopefully there'll be much more variety in future as the board naturally ebbs.>>8026899>>8027731I'm glad I managed to capture at least some of his likeness! Chuffed he was recognisable>>8027948you're very kind (and scary!) I'll continue the struggle of getting a grasp on my fundamentals
>>8026426You're not wrong. AI destroyed this board. There were so many good fucking artists that gave up posting here, some literal pros that worked in the industry, lost to the algorithmic winds.
