>>8031633>how do you escape the soulless renderfag phase? You need to learn that pursuing ultra realism is dumb and useless in itself and the only thing that matters is your own impression or expression to subjet. Why? Because the subject is already there and its realistic, what's the point of painting those who already exist in real life in 1:1 sense to your canvas? Its not painting, its transferring, like a photocopy machine that are copying each things to another paper and another paper: no emotion, no impression, not even a slight expression from yourself, might as well take a pic of your subjet and frame it on the wall if thats what you wantImpression and expression are the only thing that matters

>>8031633there's a strong likelihood that the image of the knight is a 1-for-1 paintover of a photograph or existing medieval painting. while the image is stunning visually, tracing is looked down upon precisely because it is derivative and low-effort. if you can prove to me that the artist painted the knight without 1-to-1 references, i would be very impressed, but chances are that disgusting lolibait character was likely painted completely freehand and i find it more impressive. artist should be drawing busty fitgirls instead, or at least petite women with bigger hips

>>8031665This is the OG pseud take. It only holds true if your medium somehow has the ability to transmit an identical experience of the real thing into the viewer's mind. But it doesn't, and nothing can. And so every attempt at realism is an abstraction by necessity, and abstractions are by and large intentional and artistic decisions in one way or another. The decision to pursue realism against the nature of the medium is in itself a notable artistic expression, especially when a photo is a simpler and more conventional option. That isn't to say it can't be done poorly or without thought, but realism by itself is far from the default mode of expression as far as painting is concerned.
>>8031757I concede that 0.1% of a realist's piece may contain soul.
>>8031665>>8031757hyper-realism is ideal if you want to subconsciously convey the effect to audiences that what they are seeing is real and/or they are present with the characters. impressionists will shit on realism because it "lacks emotion", but it does have a subjective effect on how audiences perceive your art, and a good artist can use that to their advantage. people love modern capeshit and scifi live action hollywood films which are already at least 50% cgi at this point. people crave fantasy but the average person is too bogged down by a razor thin suspension of disbelief.while i'm a technically minder person and i prefer realism in general (i am biased), realism is, at the very least, an objective reality for one to base their art off of. realistic art can always be graded fairly based on how "real" it looks, which is not something you can do with impressionism or cartoons. realism is a very technically-minded style and anyone in an artistic dick measuring contest can whip out a hyper-realistic anime girl to prove their mastery of fundamentals.if that's not the kind of artist you are, then by all means continue to draw stylized pieces with SOVL, but don't knock realism as a whole
