Currently learning to do value studies. I like to make a posterized version of the reference as well as a high contrast version. Is there any way that to proceed from this posterized stage to studying the original that makes sense? Or is this as far as I reasonably push this version of the study, method wise, and I then begin a separate study of the original?Working in Rebelle, any and all pointers appreciated!
measure the angles instead of winging it and fuck off to /beg/
Wing it instead of measuring, simplify shapes, and add lashes. And fuck off to /beg/
fuck off to /beg/
>>8036854you should skip this shitand fuck the beg cunts
>>8036854>Currently learning to do value studiesWhy? You can't even construct the head properly.
>>8036854You're doing fine. Tho I'd reccomend trying to "posterize" it yourself in your head and with your brush. As far as this version, it seems fine to keep doing and it will build confdience but it will not teach you to invent these lighting scenarios you are studying if you do not disassemble the composition into simple shapes of light yourself.Goated Rebelle user btw.

>>8036879This OPYou are not doing a "value study", from what I can see you are just copying shapes
>>8036854Value studies aren't a bad idea, but it may be more useful at your level to develop more concrete knowledge with targeted exercises. The reason I think this is because you've relied on the software-posterized image to guide your value mapping instead of an understanding of what values are important to depict (specular highlight, light, midtone, core shadow, shadow, reflected light, cast shadow)Your homework: - Learn about the five value shading system.-Take the image you posted and identify the five values. Bonus EXP if you redo your study with this knowledge. - Learn about local value. -Learn about the fundamentals of form and lighting.Apply this knowledge to basic 3D forms. Post results in /beg/ for critique. Once you feel confident with values and form, work on edges (soft/hard)and halftone texture. If you don't know where to start look up Marco Bucci's or Prokos tutorials on lighting and values. Godspeed /beg/ boi
>>8036937>you are just copying shapesNot even accurately. Face on the left looks nothing like the other two and anyone who aspires to be an artist should be able to tell. Left face looks like it has been crushed with a mace.
>>8037041>Value studies aren't a bad idea, but it mayLmao, this sounds like an AI response.
>>8037062Fuck me, I really did write like bot. Been using Gemini so much for tech support and now it's affected my writing style. Jesus fucking christ. I'm better off writing like an autistic millennial Redditor.
OP here, I expected to take a little beating and did not leave empty handed. Although very fair points about neglecting the groundwork and needing to be more diligent about structure and form. The painting was hastily and lazily put together for the purpose of exploring methods of studying value. I was unaware of the \beg\ thread and will stick to that moving forward>>8036931Great point about not being able to disassemble the work into geometry, I think I'll dial back the posterization use and try to use my brain more instead. I can already feel it kind of fucking with my head in ways I don't grasp which is not a good sign. Thanks for the input! Rebelle is wonderful so far>>8037041Gemini or not, this was great and I'll look more closely at the five value system and "local values" which I am completely unfamiliar with. Thanks and have a great day>>8036937I think it is pretty clear that I am establishing and making notes of what parts of the portrait share the same values
>>8036854Study how to shade basic forms and dont be afraid to pull them up even when shading. Experiment with one color so that you can learn the range of different values within the same colorDo black and white value studies so you can learn how to hard shade and therefore identify darks quickerAlter how many values you use. Sometimes use 5, sometimes use 2. Draw from life. Put a toilet paper roll in the light and analyze how it works as a basic cylinder.
>>8037041Local value is huge too, almost forgot that. Really important when drawing nature. Plus understanding light. Steve Huston talks about shading in depth
>>8036854guess it and then check the photo how far you are off also send og ref of pic related
>>8037106>I think it is pretty clear that I am establishing and making notes of what parts of the portrait share the same valuesYou were notThe program did that, you just copied it's results
