these are terrible>pywlol fuck off
>>8038192>pyw>lol fuck offwhat a pussy lmao
>>8038192>>8038205are we going schizo right off the bat?
>>8038192thats not important. anons drawing and wanting to improve should be the goal of this thread. its not a gallery for your enjoyment. >inb4 pywthese are very old though. i'll spam the thread with new ones in the following few days, since i got an opportunity to grind for a while
let's start this one with an oldie. how do I draw good figs. >inb4 'feel the form' 'just draw'sorry not talented. recently went through all of morpho simlified forms copying every drawing. what other time-wasting endeavor would you fellas suggest
>>8038454define "good" figures, then go study those "good" figures.
>>8038504define "study"
>>8038511>define "study"drawing a lot from reference and then from memory till you can do it like you do breathing without thinking about it. also, you are now breathing manually.
I just was browsing the previous thread; where can I find more from this guy >>7980723 ?
>>8038520but how can one meaningfully "study" a reference if he doesn't know "how" it was drawn and why it was drawn in that particular way, what tools and workflow the artist took to draw it. what you're describing is just ''monkey see monkey do'' kind of drill-copying, which isn't a way to learn
>>8038454>how do I draw good figsYou already draw good figures. You're better than most posters here.>no "just draw" postsOk. Do mindful practice. Draw with reference then remove reference and draw from memory. Or try to replicate the drawings of other artists and copy their methods.>>8038530You can find some God tier artists that showcase their entire drawing process and try to replicate that. Here's someone who shows every step for his figures, from the construction to the refinement. https://youtu.be/tJyRUUvZCrg?t=2251
>>8038511>>8038520study means you learn something, think about it, when you "study" for a test or a subject, what ends up happening? you learn about the topic. same thing should happen here. When you study great art, you should learn something, not just copy, copy does not equal study>>8038530true, just a copy does not mean you actually "learned" anything, you must really STUDY. Ask yourself questions, ask how, ask why, obsess over it, study it and learn something.
>>8038542picrel is hot garbage lmao
>>8038730Thanks for your retarded input, nodraw.
yeah that showed him.
>>8038732kind of agree with that poster, its weak gesture.
>>8038761Because its not a gesture drawing. How does it feel to be a stupid nigger?
>>8038730>>8038761>>8038846why cant anyone just post the good gestures, where are they
>>8038852mattesi, glen keane, vilppu, most western animators
>>8038530>howjust pet the fucking dog
>>8038852In that bucket belongs Gnass, he worked with / was mentored by Keane and Vilppu, and is very specialized in gesture drawing.>>8038846You can argue it's the absence of a good gesture, lacking any gravity and feel. These eastern artists like to design their figures in a perspective grid as-if they are cars. So it's now wonder they end up feeling like static blueprints.
>>8038903Its CLEARLY not a gesture drawing. Its a rotation exercise. Stop being dishonest.
>>8038906Nontheless it was posted in response to "how to draw good figures" so it was judged in that aspect. Why would you post it in response to that question if the intention was not to showcase a "good" figure drawing?
>>8038907It is a good figure. Figure drawing =/= gesture. How is that drawing you posted a good figure if it doesn't even have the hands, or toes?
>>8038909gesture is an aspect of a figure drawing retard. those ones are stiff as fuck and lacking gesture.
nobody even draws in here
>>8038910Yeah and its not a finished figure drawing. Sooooooo how is that helpful?
>>8038909>It is a good figure. It may be a good exercise, but it's only a good figure if you have zero artistic taste. You print out STL's from sketchfab and put them up in your room?>Figure drawing =/= gestureGranted that gesture is one of the most subjective terms in art, what makes a figure "good" if it conveys absolutely nothing? Is an anatomical chart a good figure drawing in your dictionary?>How is that drawing you posted a good figure if it doesn't even have the hands, or toes? It's a gesture nigga, not fully developed. The hands are very much present, and the toes can be felt if not seen (though one is visible on the left).
is the gesture in the room with us now? point to it
>>8038916you establish the gesture very early on, so that's no excuse.
>>8038910fuck "definition" cuntsjust draw
>>8038920shut the fuck upif bro just wants to rotate some figures shut the fuck upnext u wanna beg about his iq huh?moron.
>>8038926>just drawBad advise. If you don't know what you have problems with & are unwilling to learn, then your issues will just compound and you will be stuck in mud eternally.Draw & learnGesture is important, not by virtue of having a gesture, but by being able to work out the essence of the whole. If you suck at that basic thing, then your figure drawings will suck regardless how detailed you render or how accurately you apply perspective.
stole some refs from the previous thread. these took 15-20 mins>>8038897did you read the post or did the word "how" by itself provoke a pavlovian response from you. aren't howies nodraws anyways>>8038542don't call the figs good, call them bad it's food for improvement. copying artists is decent practice, but most art I like, I look at it and have no idea what steps were taken to draw it. I follow the guy you linked btw, I don't have his toolset unfortunately. his line brush is pretty appealing>>8038560well, I "am" trying to study, was your assumption that I wasn't doing that? the point is that I'm not improving. "go study" is the kind of vague feedback I cherish this thread for. I'll go study again then...
holy shit Hampton course is unbearable who the fuck is even the target audience?
>>8039004its fucking terrible, the target audience is brain rotted people with no attention span, the course was made in a style to be clip farmed on youtube shorts its horrible. Basically anything in the course is already said on hamptons youtube page or prokos. Each segment has to be able to be repacked into a 10 minute clip.
>>8038454>>8038974Well before you decide on a grind to waste months on, it makes sense to solve for the known unknown: What do you think your figures are lacking? If you want more detailed figures, you could work in more of the anatomy by using tone. If you want more expressive figures, you could move them around a bit, change the angles and shift the weight - whatever helps conveying the action better. Modifying the reference is actually a good test for whether you are a copy monkey or if you actually have an good understanding of the forms and their deformations. If you just wanna grind cuz u don't know what to do, Veil on YT has a 6 month anatomy challenge, maybe that's something for you.
>>8038542>RIYL68 people bother supporting this soulless husk on patreon? I wonder if they'll ever bother making another original drawing ever again, their last one was when they first started drawing many years ago. I stumbled on their yt a year or two back and they are still doing the same shit but now they have 50k subs instead of a more sensible 1k for whatever reason. Interesting since they don't even bother to turn their drawings into ganyu or whatever like pluvium, another pinterest copier
>>8039024if I could articulate whatever it is I'm dissatisifed with I wouldn't be asking the retarded "how to draw good" haha. I was kind of hoping to stumble otno someone in this general who would consider my figs bad and give me actionable advice on what can be done differently. "you put a line there but you should've put it here instead"I have different gripes with the two sets you replied to. the 15 min sketches are passable, but they have boring shapes and linework. when you draw from an irl ref, you face the problem that reality is not made up of lines. the solution is to use symbols and stylize. but I don't understand how to use line beyond contourslike, a boob is round, so I use a "C"-looking line to represent it. I don't think beyond that. when there's a clear break between two shapes, you put a line there ig. but what are you supposed to do when there are more subtle plane changes. look at the back of the leftmost fig. my exact thought process is: I can see that there's a shadow where her left scapula is, let's put a line there idk, and maybe put a second line on the other side of her back because there's a second scapula in that general area". sometimes the thought is: "I remember seeing a drawing where an artist put a line below the boobs. I guess it's to describe the bottom of the ribcage, so I'm gonna put the same line on my fig too, even though I don't have a clear idea why I'm using that particular symbol. the bottom of the ribcage is like an arch, but I don't often see people put an arch line in that place"
for not having drawn in three weeks and not much before that, these felt surprisingly good. i still forget to plan out space prior to doodling and sketching, but eh. the papers cheap. taking a short break, more later /fig/gers. also>43 posts>9 imagesyikes!
>>8039045It's not exactly motivating for anyone to spend time responding to you when you don't at all know what you want yourself. The two main ways to do figures is to either go the photo copier route or internalize a mannequin and apply the pose and perspective form the ref to it. To be good you need a lot of both but more of the internalizing if you want to make your own compositions instead of simply copying. Now for whichever you choose you need to "solve" the whole pose instead of being lazy about it. I don't know whose school of thought these dumb 1-15 minute figures are but they make no sense unless you are already experienced and know exactly what you are getting from such exercises.
>>8039032It showcases the process of figure drawing and is easy to follow. What an absolutely retarded fucking post.
>>8039004>>8039005I was about to start with Hampton's gesture course and then move on to his figure course, since so many people recommend his book. Which course would you recommend for a beginner?
>>8038915The thread started with drawings, they got no responses, and then it devolved into shit flinging. No wonder nobody posts their work.

i couldnt capture the likeness exactly but that wasnt the focal point when i started, shouldve just been a simple fig. just kinda exploded. feels good to be backn in the saddle again though
no need to envy my skillz guys you can reach this level too after 10 years of grinding>>8039056>whose school of thought these dumb 1-15 minute figures arehey that's what I've been saying! timed figs are gay and are only practiced by those who already know how to draw as means to brag. now, since you've been earnest with me I'll act the same in turn and tell you that I've only mentioned those figs taking me 15 mins as a preemptive excuse about them looking uuh basic. in truth I could spend and hour more on them but it wouldn't change much since that's all the detail I can bring from naked bodies. maybe the lines would be a little less wobbly>tead of being lazydon't be mean it takes all of my brain power to draw the way I do>>8038915>>8039110>complains about no drawings>no drawings attachedcurious!>>8039254I feel the lisp
>>8039406yoinks! i'm stealing this ref for later! i'm feeling you shouldve stylized it less and focused more on realism here, due to the complex nature of it. or go more extreme into the pose. it feels stuck between worlds. those weird ones can be tricky, a raygun i tried earlier this year kicked my ass
this nigger really thinks he is indicative of 10 years of grindinghahahahah
>>8039101his gesture drawing and head construction courses are pretty good at least to me but his process of figure construction is shit.

Today's posemaniacs victim. When will the cruelty end?
>>8039552hey that's a very accurate read actually, I kept swinging between trying to keep to the ref and stylizing. did a redraw and now it looks better I think. studio pose refs can't compete with genuine action>>8039734my bad
>>8039884>and now it looks better I thinkoh yeah, thats a clear improvement now. good job. i've struggled quite bit. its a tricky pose.
>>8039896>i've struggled quite bit. its a tricky pose.and all in all i think it didnt come out as bad. maybe i will too do another attempt tomorrow or the coming week. that throwing arm/hand really threw me off
Tried myself with some review of >>8038974. Disclaimer: Half-knowledge and terrible formatting.>>8039045>a boob is round, so I use a "C"-looking line to represent it.You do know what a boob is, you showed it in the 3rd drawing - a balloon half-filled with water, resting on a rounded surface. >but what are you supposed to do when there are more subtle plane changes. One of the difficulty with line drawings, otherwise i would say put down tone. Thinner lines maybe? Partly countouring the transitional form inside the larger form? Or move to the nearest contour and try to show the plane change there? I don't know of any other options. The back is confusing and difficult to begin with.>the bottom of the ribcage is like an arch, but I don't often see people put an arch line in that placeWell, look on yourself. If you pull in your belly (unless ur fat, u fat lass) you see that the plane changes on the peak of the arch (sternum) are considerably less than for the wings of the ripcage.>>8039046Excellent arms and upper body in the middle. The figure on the right is difficult to read with those shadows, I don't think it's intended to be a 2 value drawing? So maybe it needs one more value level in the shadows or just the value levels more consistently applied.
Okay guess it's time to post something. My least-bad work from live classes these past 3 weeks. 5 minute figs, excluding the shading afterwards.Been drawing for less than a year, so pls no bully...>>8039056>>8039406Well, there's quite a bit to learn from timed drawing, live drawing specifically. Obviously i'm still firmly in low /beg/ territory, but let me regurgitate some things I've picked up....First, what you are seeing usually isn't what you wanna draw - you have a bad angle, or the light blows out the details you want to capture, or limbs get occluded in an awkward manner, or the pose just isn't as interesting as it could be because the model forgets to move their head in an interesting way. So you end up modifying and inventing a lot of stuff. Otherwise, if you just copy what you see, you end up copying the crappy lighting or the awkward angle - and that's what your final drawing will be. Nobody cares whether it reflects 1:1 what you saw. Second, the model moves all the time. If you rely on copying, you are going to be absolutely btfo'ed just by that. Especially with active pose, the model will hold the pose proper only for a few seconds. That's when you put down your gesture and then you spent the remaining time developing it and making if work on your paper. And third you become really economical with your time. With some live drawing experience (without being an expert), you can get something like >>8038974 done in 2 minutes, I've seen it. Maybe not as precise as you would like it, but closely approximating. You do have to move away from conscious measurements and comparisons to more of an intuitive understanding, tho. 15 minutes for a gesture is actually an insane amount of time. Walt Stanchfield talks about analyzing a pose in a fraction of a second and putting the gesture down in 15 seconds.Uh, TL;DR timed drawing and live drawing teaches you to stop copying and analyze+invent instead. Besides getting your speed up.
>>8039934>don't think it's intended to be a 2 value drawingsomething like that. just having fun doing whatever and experimenting >>8039945>Been drawing for less than a year, so pls no bully...thats not bad considering, just stay on target. being constantly aware of negative and white space as just another shape helped me leap forward lasty year.
>>8039934Played around a bit further just to see what i can do.Some ideas I got* Yes, there is a lot of Lat showing on the bottom right, but you can still put in a ribcage indication to give it more dimension. * Attempt at a breast shape (a bit scuffed, maybe to small). Tried to indicate that the breasts and the pecs are being pulled up into the shoulders, so i adjusted the inner contours for the arms a bit. On the right, i gave the armpit a line and then i turned the line left to it (the right contour of the pecs) into a slightly sickle-shaped line which is then continued by the breast. Similarly, the left contour of the right breast is being continued by the pecs further up. So: The entire right breast and pecs now got a bit of an interrupted teardrop shape. On the left, i also tried to indicate that the breast goes into the arm.* Tried to define the left shoulder a bit more and indicate the clavicle and acromion (_very_ small interruption in the contour), Then i tried putting in some of the trap and SCM, though i don't really agree with the result either it's an attempt. Maybe in this stylization, the SCM should be completely left out, but i would still like to indicate the turn on the neck somehow. Maybe i'm completely destroying your stylization with this. Also i'm did this without stylus on my trackpad so excuse the terrible line quality.
I did the OP image and this in fifteen minutes. I personally find timed figures the most useful type of practice.
>>8040243reupload
>>8039934>>8040233I appreciate the feedback a lot!! generally agree with every edit you made, redrew those figs with them in mind. center fig needed most edits, the right one least. it's probably the best I can do with just a line rn. at the bottom I've added a pic of line-only figs I find good, for "goals" reference>One of the difficulty with line drawings, otherwise i would say put down tone. Thinner lines maybe? Partly countouring the transitional form inside the larger form? Or move to the nearest contour and try to show the plane change there? I don't know of any other optionsthe only solution I've found to this problem with smooth transitions is going from line to hatching, you can see that here on the left arm and right thigh >>8039884but then there's another problem, and it applies to female figs mostly. for whatever reason the more lines you add to a female fig, the uglier it looks to me, so I always try to come up with ways of describing the form with the least lines possible>>8039898nice one mano. if I DARE offer feedback, the first thing that jumps at me when I look at the ref is that beautiful "C" gesture line going from the tip of her left arm and down to her left knee. I think you added too many line breaks to the left side of her torso and lost that gesture a little. just my five cents!!>that throwing arm/hand really threw me offhaha yeah. my thoughts when drawing were "I just hope no one looks at it"was tempted to stylize it down to a black silhouette>>8040197I wonder why you put down the guideline for eye level but then drew the eyes below it still. I like this blurry line you put on the body, gives it volume>>8040247>I did the OP image and this in fifteen minutesfuark... I knew it! you're bragging!! you're bragging!! I'd prob spend 5 mins just to draw a nice-looking oval for the chest
This was done from a photo I found in a National Geographic magazine from the 70s about Massachusetts. Does this count?: D
>>8040359They got a nice feel to it, glad my scribbles could be of help!I especially like the modification you made for the third one, the subtle back glance, really makes something out of a not-too-great reference.Just two more things i wanna note:In the first figure, the contour for the buttocks skin fold has to curve downward, not upward. An upward curve indicates that the leg is going away from the viewer, but it is going toward the viewer (slightly at least). Why? It is her sole standing leg and she shifts her center of gravity onto it. That also causes the gluteus to bulge at that point, as it presses up against the leg. I put in the downward contour and because it still came on too strong, i broke the line further and used light blue. Then i tied modifying the contour of the left ass cheek to indicate the bulging gluteus (please disregard the changes i made further up in the contour - i absolutely ruined that ass).Because the upper leg in the left variation looked a bit empty, i tried putting in another line in the right, because why not. If you can use hatching, then you can also double your lines for emphasis.Dunno, i tried. Probably need to move on because i'm getting crazy staring at that ass.Ah, one more thing about the right figure: you put in the bottom of the left arm into a single line with the contour of the butt. It's nice to have flowing lines, but in this case, it's just confusing. I would like the arm and the butt to be delineated more. You could put in a small bulge in the butt, indicating that the arm is pressing into it. And/or you could properly define the elbow bones of the arm. Alright all that being said, you don't actually need to do all that because it's probably time to move on by now.
>>8040380i'd say its more of a /draw/ piece. good job though
>>8040359That's the eyebrow level, not the eye levelAlso thank you, the blurry line bit is me trying to imitate the way people draw traditionally, where they use THICK strokes for the shadow terminator. However it was my first time doing it so it looks a bit funny haha After a quick google search, I suppose it's similar to how watts does it. (pic rel)

>>8040439This is the most Hank Hill looking unappealing ass and hips I've ever seen in my life. Jesus Christ.
>>8038454Honestly the biggest problem I always see with you is accuracy of angles, proportions and perspective. Somehow you always tend to misjudge the distances and angles on the lower parts of the body due to the foreshortening. Case in point that broken foot on the top left. I also think you can be more deliberate with designing your shapes of light and shadow for the cloth and hair as your messy strokes often makes your drawing look flat. I feel like you could learn a lot by making more careful observations and measurements to iron out these issues. You obviously draw a lot but it may be time to slow down instead of speed up so to speak.

>>8047560Thank you, honestly I want to get better but at the same time I feel I'm just putting in hours/grind without actually thinking about how to improve. Yes he is, I was thinking about using a couple fight scenes from him to get some references, sounds pretty fun. I think I'm a little bit more inclined into Force, I also want to get a more in-depth knowledge about anatomy, I'll probably set aside some proper time to practice both gesture and anatomy.
>>8047595>the same time I feel I'm just putting in hours/grind without actually thinking about how to improveits really simple. you draw something with reference, then draw it from memory and repeat with same subjects or subject matter till you know it. it takes A LOT of time, more than there is in one lifetime to learn everything. by copying well and erasing smybol drawing, you already have half the rent, or rather just the beginning of the end. from then on out its just studying.what i would suggest is the sherlock holmes method. he only studied stuff that he acrually needed for his goal of becoming the ultimate mystery/crime solver. thats why its good to have a goal, so you know what to waste your time towards. a generalist will get nowhere. you know, jack of all trades, master of none.stay on target, anon!

>>8048301I watch Hampton right now, i think his style suits me best from what i've seen so far. I like how he gives you even the amount of lines to draw per limb.I tried following Villpu, but he was too loose and too creative; I wasn't able to follow him.
that left hand drove me a little nuts, but its a weird angle in the ref and the picture wasnt a good resolution to see what exactly is going on. i'll probably try that again later or tomorrow. i love rawr gunn though. shouldve done a whole page with a more detailed version, because i keep giggling at it.
>>8048995>rawr gunnaudibly kek'd
>>8049895glad someone laughed as well at least. wish i'd paid more attention to the sizing, her left arm is fuckhuge compared to the right. but it has the funny bonus!
>>8045238Thanks, anon, I don't draw pure figures as much as I used to, too many illustrations to work on
Couple drawing from a few days ago. Bought a sharpie roller .5 and I've been enjoying it a lot more than I expected. Before this I've been playing around with a bunch of brush pens so the change of pace feels cool
I work a labor job, and my body gets wrecked. I think that physical tiredness strips the sensitivity needed to draw good figures, even for days after with rest. It depresses me so much. I smoked some weed for the first time in a while and it let me feel it again. Obviously not saying it's some wonder drug for artists, it's pretty shit if you want finished results, but when you feel that failure anxiety melt away, it's cool to witness that despair/blocked mental state to just flowing as a sudden contrast. Normally I'd have to scribble with a tight grip for a few days to get that feeling back.Thought Id share.
ExtendedHonestly, these other ones are without weed, but to get this kind of flow for me is super difficult normally, its like a once or twice in a month.
>>8052901just get up earlier and then draw, problem solved
