Do SFX really need to be intelligible text?
I don't read Japanese, but the SFX in pic related reads just fine to me. It doesn't really make much difference whether it's a FWOOSH or a VROOM or a BWOOF or whatever.
The way the SFX is drawn communicates the intensity and general style of it.

What is the style called, that uses a single line to draw eyes, nose etc. If lines are emphasized it's most often by distinct parallel lines not by build up lines.
Is it ligne claire?
How do i train that, i have struggle to come up with design in this style?
Even if the drawing is crude this style of lineart makes it look confident. And on the opposite, even if i could compose better and more defined drawing than pic related, it still would look worse.

Manga artists are individuals, they don't follow schools of thought. The links you can draw between artists are their inspirations and personal tastes.

You mention Katsuhiro Otomo. Naoki Urasawa is heavily inspired by Otomo. He's not drawing in Otomoism, he's just drawing how he personally likes to draw. There's no logic or reason behind it. Every artist draws how they personally like to.
Some artists like Otomo are more influential than others, and to an extent you can draw webs of influence with prominent people like Otomo, Tezuka, Rumiko, etc. But even these are just analyses and not really reality. Many of these artists are unaware of their own inspirations. They just draw how they draw and it's best to look at them as individuals.

See the inspiration, the small eyes and details noses. Urasawa is a bit Otomo fan. There are many Otomo fans and for a while it seemed everyone was a clone of him. But for many, they simply draw without thinking and aren't even aware they're being influenced.
For example, anime like Lucky Star and Clannad led to the stereotypical idea in the west of anime style. The pointy chins, giant eyes, colorful hair, etc. But that wasn't really anime style but rather just the unique personal style of a few artists at the time.

its a shorthand of anime, this is actually extremely lazy manga style. fujimoto is not good at drawing, he just traces 3d models. Sometimes his lines look good but he often rushes that too.

With anime noses you can shorten it to just the tip of the nose and a nostril, people rarely draw the bridge from the front because its a subtle hill and has no sharp lines unless they want to show the character has a western nose.

I've received the author proof, but there are some things that need fixing before I can say I'm happy with the print. The cover is both darker and more saturated than what I want, and the colors and contrast in the darker sections ate shit.

Merrivius' elf comic is 100% straightforward. You have a haughty elf, a simple human, a simple dwarf, a simple orc. Zero things that have to be explained, everyone already knows the archetypes. If you got viewership for that, then more power to you. But it doesn't change anything I said in terms of objective facts: Characters that don't fit into neat little pre-existing archetypes based on their appearances and behaviors will require more investment and work from the audience than those do, and so that is a smaller group of potential readers since a lot of people refuse to do that. Going further and making them anthro girls is an even smaller subset of that since they aren't going to be everybody's cup of tea. Nowhere did I say that it would not be possible for you to obtain readers.

It might catch on. The characters are complex and require a wealth of material to chew on to get to know.

But I don't think it will catch on right away. The characters are essentially ordinary people. They're not really cartoon characters. Cartoons characters are typically more one-dimensional, you'll have a guy who's entire gimmick is that he hates lemons, and every scene you see him in ends in him expressing his hatred of lemons or whatever.
For example, one of your characters likes to collect retro PC's, but for that to be one-dimensional, they would probably be like Wade from Kim Possible, buried in their tech, detached from the real world and everything that comes out of their mouth is something nerdy. They start out as one-dimensional and slowly become filled with depth.
I'm not saying you should do that, just that that would be the more typical approach.
You have more ordinary appearing characters, the depth is there from the start, but the downside is that they're not immediately able to be understood.

Is this good comedy? I have an idea called White Avalanche. The main character is like Mr. Incredible but stronger and whiter. He kills a lot of Black people accidentally.
It opens up with a nuke from terrorists coming to hit a hospital for children. Avalanche as a last resort grabs a passerby and chucks it at the missile in the sky. The person happens to be a Black Woman. A photographer on the scene, also Black, gets a lucky zoom in of the warhead's tip in the woman's mouth right before it detonates with no toll on human lives.
But the Black journalists call Avalanche to the Daily Black HQ to Blackmail him. $100 million or they'll publish the photo and claim he picked a Black Womyn on purpose to save the racist infants in the Hospital for White Children. The lettering on the nuke is photoshopped to WHITE SUPREMACY. Avalanche who is experiencing PTSD from the event and doesn't have the money gets in a heated discussion with the PR Black Wymyn. He just wanted to save lives and had no time to thiink. But the Black Womyn refuses to empathize with him. After more disingenuous accusations of racism, Avalanche finally snaps, and tells the PR Womyn, "you don't even know what it's like to make a choice", punctuating every word by stabbing a finger to her chest. The Black Wymyen's resting bitch face starts bleeding from the mouth and Avalanche realizes he really goofed up this time. The Black rapper folding a paper airplane in the room goes SHIIIIEEET and reaches for a gun to pop a cap in his ass, but Avalanche disintegrates his face into atoms with a punch. Avalanche is very strong. Another Black Weman enters with a coffee tray, and upon sighting the scene yells "oh no you didn't!" but Avalanche headshots her with the paper airplane before she can react.
Now surrounded with racial slaughter, White Avalanche swears to redeem himself and help Black People, but he ends up kiling hordes of niggers by mistake or bad luck. It may look like gore but it's ironic social commentary.

Guys i have an idea about a blend of comics and manga.

It's a mixture of OPM and The Boys/Invincible. It's capeshit deconstruction but it's drawn like a manga. Black and white, short chapters.

Is Murata using grey scale only? Is paper manga printed in grey scale as well? Or do they produce 2 versions, 1 for print and 1 for web?
What is your opinion on blurring line work in manga? It's impossible to do in trad and it reads very, very digital. I cringe every time i see in manga.

Fuck, what should i do? Grey scale rendering is my strongest art skill. It's the most natural aspect of art to me, line work and color is something i have to think about more. And yet i suck at screen tones the most.
I watched so many videos on youtube and it's all made for babys. Like push this button, apply this filter and your done.

I actually think Boichi's advice only applies to foreigners already living in Japan, but the vast majority of aspiring mangaka live OUTSIDE Japan and shouldn't be trying to get into the country first. Why? Well first, mangaka are all freelancers in Japan and you can't be "hired" by your publisher in a way that would secure you a visa. If you aren't young enough or live in a country with working holiday visas with Japan, you have to either be a student or get a job to get a longer term visa. Jobs in Japan pay like shit so it's not worth it to move there before you've even won any awards or gotten an editor. More of the successful overseas mangaka (as in published in a magazine for multiple volumes) nowadays started by working completely remotely and only made movements to relocate to Japan AFTER securing a serialization if they even have plans to relocate at all. Getting the serialization also makes it easier to get something like an Artist Visa, which can be acquired with a good lawyer and a serialization.
Funny enough a lot of the artists who were agreeing with Boichi about the importance of being in Japan are the ones like the Finnish girl who haven't actually come out with a serialization yet and/or have been in serialization prep hell despite being in Japan for years and attending doujin markets like Comitia. Being able to meet face-to-face doesn't sway things as much as Boichi claims in this day and age. I'm sure that's the way he had to do it since he's Korean and debuted decades ago where it was likely a faux pas for even Japanese artists to ever communicate via email for convenience.

Why aren't there many Miura, Inoue, Murata, or even just Horikoshi copycats in general in the manga industry while many people are trying to copy Fujimoto even style-wise?

Learning how to draw well is easier than ever in general with the amount of countless resources online, so the "well their art is too high level" is just not a good excuse. Back in the 90s many american comics artists were trying to fully ape artists like McFarlane or Jim Lee too, and they weren't that far off Horikoshi or Murata in terms of draftmanship and detailed art.

The picture i posted has a very nice drawing, good composition even the values are good, the thumbnail looks very solid. But the rendering is awful. Cheap ass texture brushes, looks like concept cringe from 2010 or something.

That's my problem, it feels like the standards are breaking apart in manga.
If you would take that page as inspiration, i would remember back my concept art phase, i would use proper texture brushes in photoshop, ditch the line work and use the lasso tool. Than you would play around with lost and found edges, use a more impressionistic brush strokes and than it looks nothing like manga anymore but something you would see on art station.

Japan is unironically full of niggers now and thanks to (((((American))))) directives they're importing even more until the natives are fully replaced. It was the same with the French Academics and the Impressionist. The Impressionist were fresh, arrogant, new. The academics were considered old-fashioned.
The only problem is, if you go one step away from formalism, it can produce good results.
Many Impressionists had a deep understanding of fundis.
It's like punk version of high art. Can be stimulating for the younf folks.
Same with Fujimoto, he could draw better, but by lowering the consistency and increasing the speed, he can gain more energy, more freshness.
It's the same if you compare a weekly manga with an annual French graphic novel. The quality in manga is lower, less details, less rendering, less compression but you gain energy and freshness (if done right).
It's hard to make something drawn fast if you draw it slow. But to draw it fast you need a skill exssec, you can trade for energy.

Impressionism is cool, Fujimoto is cool (well part 2 of CM is too sloppy in my opinion) the problem is the second (third and forth) generations. The zoomers who trie to draw like Fuji dont produce an exess in skill to trade for energy, they just try to draw sloppy, they see it not as a form of expression but a shortcut.
Same with impressionism. The modernism that came after were chaissing the punk attitued. And if you go the punk route too far, you are not a cute, blonde Canadian fuck toy anymore, but a fat, drunk bastard laying in your own shit.
Picasso looked like shit and most Fujimoto clones will look like shit. Well i try to draw like Murata and it still looks like shit. Maybe the zoomers are on to something, actually.

Any time you see a screentone look 'nice' its because its been scanned from a book so its been blurred in the printing stage, chewed and spit out by the scanning process OR its exported at a large enough scale the tones don't moire when its resized down.

The story looks boring, hard to get without the text. The action is similar drawn, but it's way less clear and dynamic compared to OPM.

Japanese has lots of things that depend on the context. Who's speaking, and who to. When someone comes in saying "watashi wa..." in a casual context they're either a chick or a foreigner using textbook japanese or just MTLing. The english input does not give the MTL enough information to spit out the correct japanese for the situation a lot of the time.
Plus there's just ways of phrasing things that make sense in english but not japanese, which is true of most language translations.

I hold far more respect for that than for artists who squander their immense talent on work no one will ultimately value or remember. Just look at this Elden Ring manga, the level of technical skill and exhaustive effort required to draw at this caliber is staggering. If you possess that rare tier of artistic talent, why waste it on disposable parody art that will be forgotten by tomorrow? If I were blessed with that kind of skill I would study writing obsessively to build a masterwork capable of becoming the next Berserk.

I say this purely from the perspective of someone who was not born with natural artistic talent. Why would anyone willingly sink hundreds of hours of painstaking effort into creating something completely forgettable rather than crafting a meaningful legacy the way a true artist should? Regarding looking at pictures for too short. As i collected physical manga i used to look longer at the key pages with the most epic. I have only view paper mangas left but i do look through them from time to time. Like tenjo tenje has some very juicy scenes i have seen dozens of times. Or Hellsing, or Blame.
Thats really handy and is not comparable to anything else.
I can go through a volume of 200 pages and relive the key parts in 5 minutes or something.
Skipping through a movie is much less fun. Or a book, the wall of text is too desorienting.

If i read manga online i save the cool scenes, but than i have them randomly in a file without the context of the previous pages.
So yeah, i would say if you publish on paper, it's definitely worth it. 5% of hardcore fans will spend a lot of time looking at it.
I think it's good practice to think the best of your audience, even if 95% of them are tards. I think it's a thing of self worth as well. Like think of yourself as an artist, creating art for art connoisseurs. And everyone else is just a tourist making you enough money to continue.

Did you upload your files as pdf? Were they 1:1 the dimensions of the book + trim? I'm doing some testing with mixam and it seems like uploading png files at different dpi they get scaled down and have artifacts except at 300dpi. Whereas the PDF ones at various dpi dont get artifacts

Yes, I exported the whole thing as a pdf at 600 dpi, with bleed around all edges included. All the printers I've looked into so far have only accepted pdf files, so that's what I've been working with.

gm sirs, I'm looking for a course on drawing figures from imagination. I realized this is actually the missing piece for me. I can draw from reference relatively well now (figure or anything really), pic related is recent work of mine (I'm still figuring out digital so it's not my best work but still).

I'm wondering if there is a classic course for this, like how you have Steve Huston and Vilppu for figure drawing. Also, it doesn't have to be "anime" style at all, I prefer more general figure drawing from imagination.

Listen brother, assuming this aint bait, the whole point of learning "life drawing" is to apply the lessons you learn in class to real life. You go outside to a park or sitting on a bus and you only got like a minute at most to take in your surroundings before life moves on and you are forced to fill in the rest with your IMAGINATION.
A teacher/class can only do so much you gotta APPLY those lessons to something and the only reason why art classes you see online dont mention this is cause the professor cant just jump out of the screen and make you go outside and do it. But people like Gnass and Vilppu have talked in their courses briefly about using photos and videos in context to live models and how the former is a more convenient crutch compared to the real thing. Well, the same applies to model drawing versus drawing from real life, a model session is controlled and focused, real life is unpredictable and it forces the artist to fill in the blanks with his own knowledge/imagination
A professor or a course cant help you build upon your imagination, that comes from your own trial and error and lived experience. I mean in a hypothetical scenario where you were the apprentice of Vilppu at some point he would just have you work on your own shit after you learned enough of the fundamentals and he would only exist to just give feedback.
