Why do western comics feel so... cheap, compared to manga?
Because you’re reading cheap muttslop, you nigger
That looks good to me visually.
What do you mean? There's plenty of cheap looking manga? Picrel is hardly anywhere near the worst offender I've read. You've got yellow-tinted glasses on if you think that manga's beating comics in the art department categorically. This all said, regarding OP's question, I think it's the colour. When you see these same comics in their inked stage, or even their pencils, they're often quite fabulous, and dare I say, usually better than most manga. However, colour removes SO MUCH of the oomph from the pages. It's to the point where I think western comics should give up on colour, and only do b/w like manga does.
>>8042217>There's plenty of cheap looking manga?Yeah but it's drawn by Japanese people so it's fine
>>8042217I think color can work for comics, but only when the whole thing is done by one artist with one unified aesthetic vision, and the color is given just as much attention and dignity as every other part of the artwork. When you do the assembly line paint-by-numbers shit that DC/Marvel do then it produces terrible results
This is what the most acclaimed american comic books of the 2010s as a whole by both normies and critics looks like btw
>>8042224>You filthy CunnyIt's acclaim is deserved.
I like some Western stuff. I like some eastern stuff. I like some pretty stuff. I like some ugly stuff. I don't know how anyone can claim to like art and draw imaginary battlefield lines. Grow up.
>>8042203I think it's because the artists and writers are not really in touch with the characters and worlds they're creating. In manga, everything the author (who is often one person doing both art and writing) draws is theirs. They create the whole universe. To them, it's all real, it exists vividly in their imagination, there's no disconnect between the imagined worlds and what eventually gets drawn. When they draw a character, they think about them at a level that cannot be matched if you're not also the creator of the entire universe. They think about their past, their future, aspects of their personality that aren't even relevant to the plot. Even the way they wear their clothes, they're not just mannequins, they're real living people. That scene there, OP, she's upset at herself for being a failure, but all the artist is given is the script, that's not enough. How does the character really feel? Who is she really? Without that insight, all you can ever draw is just a vaguely sad face. And it's the same in pic related, there's no emotion here, the artist just pulled a funny face in the mirror and copied the shapes they saw.
>>8042239And to be honest, even when they do create the whole story and draw it... they just don't really care about it on the level that's required. They're not passionate about it.Manga is obsessed with authenticity. Even when they draw a ridiculous world with exaggerated characters, they're always striving to make it feel real. Because what they write is something they're passionate about. That's pretty much the standard for manga, and given the workload of it, it's arguably not worth even doing if you're not passionate about it. Anytime they draw a face, or anything else, they're immersed in the world of their manga, they become their characters in the same way that an actor does, and they understand that character at the highest possible level.
>>8042239>In manga, everything the author (who is often one person doing both art and writing) draws is theirs. They create the whole universe.Sure. Lets just ignore all the adaptions that already have visuals and designs for the manga artist to use as a basis.>That scene there, OP, she's upset at herself for being a failure, but all the artist is given is the script, that's not enough. How does the character really feel? Who is she really? Without that insight, all you can ever draw is just a vaguely sad face....It's a single page...>>8042245>And to be honest, even when they do create the whole story and draw it... they just don't really care about it on the level that's required. They're not passionate about it.Christ you're full of it. You just say things and expect everyone to agree with you.
>>8042224>You filthy cunny!Oh my
>east vs west bait troll drama thread #954456445654
>>8042263No more for me, I've had my fill.
>>8042239lmao, perfect
>>8042203well others said their reasons, so here is mine>coloringyou ever seen colored manga pages, not cover art, but regular ones?they look awful tooits just easier to make a black and white picture look cleanergetting good art with colors would be impossible for manga schedules, or you would have a group project like western stuff, instead of jap mangaka with assistants
>>8042279>you ever seen colored manga pages, not cover art, but regular ones?Even the covers, quite often, look like shit. You can tell the artists doesn't often work in colour.
>>8042203But that run of Gwenpool is drawn by the Gurihiru team. It's a one Japanese woman illustrating and another coloring.
Regarding looking at pictures for too short. As i collected physical manga i used to look longer at the key pages with the most epic. I have only view paper mangas left but i do look through them from time to time. Like tenjo tenje has some very juicy scenes i have seen dozens of times. Or Hellsing, or Blame.Thats really handy and is not comparable to anything else.I can go through a volume of 200 pages and relive the key parts in 5 minutes or something. Skipping through a movie is much less fun. Or a book, the wall of text is too desorienting. If i read manga online i save the cool scenes, but than i have them randomly in a file without the context of the previous pages. So yeah, i would say if you publish on paper, it's definitely worth it. 5% of hardcore fans will spend a lot of time looking at it.I think it's good practice to think the best of your audience, even if 95% of them are tards. I think it's a thing of self worth as well. Like think of yourself as an artist, creating art for art connoisseurs. And everyone else is just a tourist making you enough money to continue.
>>8042294Lol, wrong comics thread, thats a little bit embarrassing.
>>8042292>It's a one JAPANESE woman illustrating and ANOTHER coloring.Uh-oh. How do we respond to this, fellow Place-Japan people? S-s-surely we can't say we didn't like a piece of Japanese media... right?
>>8042292>Japanese people copy western capeshit/webcomics art style>still looks like shitSo basically the style is so utterly irredeemable that not even the Japanese can save it
>>8042327Cope
>>8042327Y'know I often see people on here gloat about how great Japanese fanart of western properties looks, compared to the opposite. How quickly that tune changes when one of you don't initially recognise the artist as Japanese.
>>8042292>>8042300>>8042334You guys are being facetious and ridiculous. It’s a paid job not fanart. The script, character designs, and storyboard are obviously done by an American. It’s just like how most of your favorite cartoons from the last 50 years were storyboarded in USA then animated and drawn by Koreans but the drawings don’t look Korean. Americans are really good at outsourcing our jobs Anyways. Reading western comics just feels like being ripped off. They refuse to make anything better because crappy copy-pasted panels with 300 words of yapping is good enough. Like the image in an American comic never conveys what is going on because the characters are always talking about something totally different
>>8042346>But the writing is American!Pretty sure we're talking only about the art here. Who are you to accuse anyone of being disingenuous when you run away from that?Your precious Jap artists made a comic you don't like the look of. Get over it.
For anyone who actually reads western comics in this thread: What did you read recently?I just finished reading the John Byrne Fantastic Four run and had lots of fun. I like how he experiments with panel layout and flow often considering how wordy 80s comics can be.
>>8042356I just finished reading a collection of Humorama cartoons, and am currently reading the first volume of Playboy's Annie Fanny.Guess I'm on a raunchy streak?I can't say much about Annie Fanny, since I literally just started it, but the Humorama stuff was quite fun if you also enjoy Playboy's pinup cartoons. The art was often quite good, with some really talented artists in there, such as Dan DeCarlo (picrel).
>>8042351You don’t seem to know anything about anything other than race. Ngmi
>>8042369>You don’t seem to know anything about anything other than race.???You though this was a good comeback. Ngmi.
>>8042356I dislike this kind of thing, it's immersion breaking. Panelling should be used to better immerse the reader, not take them out of it. This reduces a comic from being a story of a living, breathing world, to being more like a pop up toy. It just shouts to the reader>"this isn't real!"and now nothing means anything in it anymore. It's like if an actor part way through a movie breaks the fourth wall and waves at the camera.
>>8042376>1773091474341372.jpgIs that a heckin' fourt wall break wuuaahhhhhh??
>>8042376Eh, I get what you mean with it taking the reader out of the experience, but I think it's alright as an occasional highlight within an exciting moment in the comic. They're breaking the usual mould of the usual clean rectangular panels in a grid to emphasise a moment. I get hating it when it's overused, especially if it's used on every page because the artist thinks they can 'reinvent the wheel', but I think we shouldn't frown at artists having small moments of experimenting with the medium either.
>>8042394It's ESPECIALLY egregious when done during an exciting moment.Ask yourself, why is a moment exciting? They're just lines on a page, why should anything in it excite you? It's the illusion of a story, or a real existing world that excites you. The journey of the characters. It's only excting if you can suspend your disbelief. And revealing to the audience that it's not real... totally handicaps that.
>>8042203It’s wild how the dialogue in translated Japanese media is often more natural and engaging than this crap, given that the Japanese stuff is being translated from a highly alien language/culture
