what do you despise about this software?

Nothing, Krita is a fucking miracle. It made history.

Tool does not switch to eraser if you push the button mid stroke

No fucking brush stroke thumbnails like every fucking other software does. WHY DO I NEED TO SEE THE ACTUAL FUCKING TOOL I WANT THE STROKE AND I DON'T WANNA SWAP PNGS FOR EVERY SINGLE FUCKING BRUSH
>>
>>8046021
Does things different that literally every other piece of drawing software for no reason
Strong "I'm not like the other girls" energy, reeks of desperation
>>
>>8046021
I have no idea how to use krita's clone stamp, or how to deselect, and the workflow for liquify seems so awkward, and sometimes I forget if the tool is on eraser mode, but otherwise I like most things about the software
>>
>>8046021
I hate that's it's free, art should be gatekept by wealth (unironically)
>>
>>8046021
I'd be using it if it weren't for the fact that it does everything backwards like a big fuck you to all other art programs. Tell me, why is it that I can pick up any art program and use it immediately without changing much, but with Krita I have to customize so much just to get it to function normally?

It's the equivalent of a video game making YGHJ the replacement for WASD and then your left mouse click being the melee button and the melee button your regular click button, then making the space button be the scroll button for good measure. All because why? Because fuck you, that's why. Not even blender does this bullshit. Its shortcuts are more akin to literally everything else than Krita. Like why dude? Why? I want to like it so bad but I just can't. If it's "made by artists for artists" I never want to meet these supposed "artists". It feels more like a linux contraption where you spend more time tweaking the actual software itself than actually using it for its intended purpose.

Fuck Krita. Could have had such a good fucking program but out of principle I will spite it for trying so hard to be fucking different.
>>
>>8046189
Blender used to have a retarded keymap and layout, then they swallowed their pride and switched to industry standard and exploded in popularity.

Krita maintains that their layout is "logically superior" once learned. They're egotistical cunts.
>>

aight then

this is the only art program I’ve ever used so i feel like I’ve dodged a lot of problems that other people in the thread have highlighted, feels gud
>>
"Tools" and "brushes" are separate things seems "powerful" at first but it's just annoying when you are actually trying to get shit done. You switch to a bucket tool, and it's using your last "brush" setting, which might cause some texture or blend mode to flood, instead of a generic dumb fill by default, so you are forced to switch your brush too. You want to switch back to a pen tool, you also have to switch your brush again. This would work better if when you switched to a tool, it would also have an associated brush memorized for it that you last selected for it. Every time you switch tools, you'll likely have to also switch brushes. 2 actions every time where it would be 1 in most other programs. This "2 actions" thing creeps up in other parts, like if you want to use a specific transform, you must first switch to the general transform tool, then you can pick the actual transform to use, and there is no way to create a shortcut to the specific transform (like mesh, free, distort, etc.). This gets extremely grating when you switch tools often, even more so when doing animations. The "10 brushes" plugin that it ships with halfway mitigates this because when you hit a "10 brushes" hotkey it can be configured to automatically also select the pen tool, because 99% of the time you want to select a brush, it's for using the pen tool. Their rational behind this is "muh generic workflows", instead of painting and drawing being the "critical path". Even though it can halfway be beaten down with plugins, some things still resist it, like the transform problem, because they don't seem to expose the plugin control for it. Also alpha inheritance: You want to pop out a quick clipping layer to do some modification? Fuck you make a group and throw the target and alpha inheritance layer in there then collapse it back down. Its so stupid they had to make an automated action to do this for convenience, which basically admits the flaw in the design for the primary use case
>>
>>8046021
it's a nice program to get started
but I wouldn't consider it for actual work, more than a couple of times it crashed on me and lost considerable progress

You ever see someone who only uses FL Studio try to switch to other music programs? They can't, or struggle to. Why? Because FL Studio is different to the keybinds and workflows that people are familiar with. Krita is great, if you never plan on working in the industry. There's a reason that programs like PS and CSP are practically interchangeable for workflow, because those are professional programs that are used in the industry where people are expected to be able to just pick up a program and have it feel familiar. Programs like FL Studio or Krita aren't plug and play in that way. Which isn't to say that they're bad, but you're not going to see them being used by many professionals. They're more like freelancer tools and and professional's toys.
>>
>>8046038
You know you can make the thumbnail anything you want? Just do a stroke
>>
>>8046228
>which basically admits the flaw in the design for the primary use case
I think the idea is that it's more of a platform, than any rigid tool for one specific thing which definitely brings problems you've highlighted.
You can definitely just solve all of these by writing a plugin and a general solution would be to have some sort of "rooms" like Affinity does, for example. But so far I haven't started getting the same issues you do except for the straight line snap, where if you want tit to snap to guide lines you cannot just do straight lines without going back and unchecking guide snap. I would expect it to be more of an angle snap where you can go in any direction, but when you're getting close to a guide it'll snap into in.

But I'll take it over any other ass-fucking Photoshop or any other software makes you take. A lot of these complaints are just people being too encrusted in a legacy workflow. Photoshop, for example, used to have the same eraser mode as Krita. But modern users are literally too young to know about that

Because Linux. Seriously, this kind of shit plagues linux programs, the devs are borderline retarded at times.

ive used krita, csp, photoshop and pain tool sai
ive stuck with krita the longest out of any of them with csp being second
it just werks, its not perfect but it does everything i need. the real kicker was the animation functionality, in csp you have to have the $500 premium edition to animate anything over 24 frames. maybe 3 crashes total in my whole user experience but it autosaves anyway so its not a huge deal regardless. maybe id be less forgiving if it were my first art program, idk

I'm on 5.2.9 and it's been like this forever
>>

i use krita and i like it a lot (mostly), but there's a few issues i hate about it a lot:

first (and biggest) issue is the built-in "sub-pixel precision" designed for getting smoother brush strokes on lowres canvases that makes the circle brush tool never create perfect circles (important as a pixel artist). the way to fix this is to go into brush settings, find "sharpness", and click the box "align brush to pixel grid", which is not something that a google search will tell you unless you stumble upon the right plebbit thread, and the fact that an important feature is buried under multiple clicks is a reoccurring UI issue with krita. if krita has some shit not working, you must figure it out yourself in the same vein as blender fuckery. enabling this setting must be done with all brushes individually and it doesn't seem to make the ellipse tool draw perfect circles either. and i know if you click shift or some other key makes X = Y but because of "sub pixel precision" it still won't draw a perfect circle always. the ellipse tool is also very hard to get curves right if you want to connect two points with a curve because you cannot reposition an ellipse while you are in the process of making one.

krita also seems to have an issue with the posterization tool, which is useful for reducing colors to a set amount if you are trying to simplify an existing image into a convenient color palette. GIMP's indexing tool lets you pick a precise number of colors, but Krita's posterization tool is not consistent with the colors. the lowest setting is 2 yet that will produce 4 colors (black, white, plus two other colors). i don't know why krita's color indexer produces weird colors like yellow/grey/black/white.

i like to use krita's "color transfer" tool for turning images into silhouettes for quick edits, but sometimes it doesn't turn every color blue. sometimes there are other colors like a stray pixel of magenta and i'm not sure why.
>>
>>8046680
(cont.)
krita's color to alpha tool will also sometimes ignore certain colors when set to level 1 (which removes only that color). one color it has issues with is the green line art color in the defaults. my assumption is that some of these colors have rounding errors with RGB values, but that's only a guess.

krita also sometimes dies on me. i've had that issue a lot less after switching to the snapstore version though. krita's "crop to content" sometimes won't crop to content and i'll have to manually trim a layer.

but overall, krita works and it's free.

That it was made in large by a mentally ill troon who lost the ability to code because he took the safe and effective, thus making the project unsustainable into the future.
If you think substantial problems are going to be fixed... you might want to think again...

>We still managed to keep Krita development up, but I would lie if I said that I was pulling my weight. And of course, in February dictator Putin started out on what would become his greatest war crime to date, the invasion of another sovereign country. His actions in Syria and elsewhere were, of course, already war crimes, but this was on another level. And also another level of sheer stupidity. You can have a working army, or a lucrative kleptocracy, but not both at the same time. Even Mencius already warned about that!

Bro chillin' on the right. Putin is apparently responsible for Krita being bad or something.

What are your performance settings? Are you using angle or opengl for rendering? I had this problem when I was using my old graphics card but after upgrading krita became much faster for me.
>>
>>8046711
i have the android version too. it has to be side-loaded off the internet though, google play store version will claim incompability but it's really just because it's a 1-to-1 port of the desktop version of krita and the user interface is not properly scaled.

the issue with android crashing out on you is an issue with RAM, my samsung phone has 4 GB and it will automatically destroy any task as soon as i back out, including clearing a WIP email when switching briefly to a new tab in firefox

The best AI prompter program, 100000 better than comfyUI.

The drawing part is turbo dogshit, the brushes are not even close to PS standards and they don't have niche brushes like CSP does (gpen, real gpen, mapping gpen, huskygpen). OpenCanvas , CSP, PS are all way better than shitta.

Leadership is wonky. There’s no way to know exactly what’s coming, which doesn’t incentivize donations, and the sponsorships don’t seem to benefit anyone. The sponsorship from Intel yielded absolutely nothing worthwhile. It doesn’t help that there are members of the leadership with severe mental health issues. The current roadmap feels lazy. Not much is said.

Besides that, Krita is good software. It doesn’t get in my way when I draw, animate, or edit.

I would love for there to be better stabilization and dithering algorithms, but those are probably proprietary. What a shame.
>>
>>8046707
It's random little things, like putting crop into a different menu and calling it "trim" instead, or making levels a filter rather than an adjustment layer. It's rife with shit like this, so if you're at all familiar with the standard setup of every other art program it's an annoyance to use at best.
