what do you despise about this software?
>>8046021Nothing, Krita is a fucking miracle. It made history.
Tool does not switch to eraser if you push the button mid stroke
>>8046021No fucking brush stroke thumbnails like every fucking other software does. WHY DO I NEED TO SEE THE ACTUAL FUCKING TOOL I WANT THE STROKE AND I DON'T WANNA SWAP PNGS FOR EVERY SINGLE FUCKING BRUSH
>>8046021Does things different that literally every other piece of drawing software for no reason Strong "I'm not like the other girls" energy, reeks of desperation
>>8046021I have no idea how to use krita's clone stamp, or how to deselect, and the workflow for liquify seems so awkward, and sometimes I forget if the tool is on eraser mode, but otherwise I like most things about the software
>>8046021I hate that's it's free, art should be gatekept by wealth (unironically)
>>8046021I'd be using it if it weren't for the fact that it does everything backwards like a big fuck you to all other art programs. Tell me, why is it that I can pick up any art program and use it immediately without changing much, but with Krita I have to customize so much just to get it to function normally? It's the equivalent of a video game making YGHJ the replacement for WASD and then your left mouse click being the melee button and the melee button your regular click button, then making the space button be the scroll button for good measure. All because why? Because fuck you, that's why. Not even blender does this bullshit. Its shortcuts are more akin to literally everything else than Krita. Like why dude? Why? I want to like it so bad but I just can't. If it's "made by artists for artists" I never want to meet these supposed "artists". It feels more like a linux contraption where you spend more time tweaking the actual software itself than actually using it for its intended purpose.Fuck Krita. Could have had such a good fucking program but out of principle I will spite it for trying so hard to be fucking different.
>>8046189Blender used to have a retarded keymap and layout, then they swallowed their pride and switched to industry standard and exploded in popularity.Krita maintains that their layout is "logically superior" once learned. They're egotistical cunts.
>>8046201>industry standard>each adobe shit have different keybindsaight then
>>8046021this is the only art program I’ve ever used so i feel like I’ve dodged a lot of problems that other people in the thread have highlighted, feels gud
"Tools" and "brushes" are separate things seems "powerful" at first but it's just annoying when you are actually trying to get shit done. You switch to a bucket tool, and it's using your last "brush" setting, which might cause some texture or blend mode to flood, instead of a generic dumb fill by default, so you are forced to switch your brush too. You want to switch back to a pen tool, you also have to switch your brush again. This would work better if when you switched to a tool, it would also have an associated brush memorized for it that you last selected for it. Every time you switch tools, you'll likely have to also switch brushes. 2 actions every time where it would be 1 in most other programs. This "2 actions" thing creeps up in other parts, like if you want to use a specific transform, you must first switch to the general transform tool, then you can pick the actual transform to use, and there is no way to create a shortcut to the specific transform (like mesh, free, distort, etc.). This gets extremely grating when you switch tools often, even more so when doing animations. The "10 brushes" plugin that it ships with halfway mitigates this because when you hit a "10 brushes" hotkey it can be configured to automatically also select the pen tool, because 99% of the time you want to select a brush, it's for using the pen tool. Their rational behind this is "muh generic workflows", instead of painting and drawing being the "critical path". Even though it can halfway be beaten down with plugins, some things still resist it, like the transform problem, because they don't seem to expose the plugin control for it. Also alpha inheritance: You want to pop out a quick clipping layer to do some modification? Fuck you make a group and throw the target and alpha inheritance layer in there then collapse it back down. Its so stupid they had to make an automated action to do this for convenience, which basically admits the flaw in the design for the primary use case
>>8046021it's a nice program to get startedbut I wouldn't consider it for actual work, more than a couple of times it crashed on me and lost considerable progress
>>8046210same. the perks of being poor and born after Y2K. so many whiny booms itt lmao
>>8046242You ever see someone who only uses FL Studio try to switch to other music programs? They can't, or struggle to. Why? Because FL Studio is different to the keybinds and workflows that people are familiar with. Krita is great, if you never plan on working in the industry. There's a reason that programs like PS and CSP are practically interchangeable for workflow, because those are professional programs that are used in the industry where people are expected to be able to just pick up a program and have it feel familiar. Programs like FL Studio or Krita aren't plug and play in that way. Which isn't to say that they're bad, but you're not going to see them being used by many professionals. They're more like freelancer tools and and professional's toys.
>>8046038You know you can make the thumbnail anything you want? Just do a stroke
>>8046228>which basically admits the flaw in the design for the primary use caseI think the idea is that it's more of a platform, than any rigid tool for one specific thing which definitely brings problems you've highlighted. You can definitely just solve all of these by writing a plugin and a general solution would be to have some sort of "rooms" like Affinity does, for example. But so far I haven't started getting the same issues you do except for the straight line snap, where if you want tit to snap to guide lines you cannot just do straight lines without going back and unchecking guide snap. I would expect it to be more of an angle snap where you can go in any direction, but when you're getting close to a guide it'll snap into in.But I'll take it over any other ass-fucking Photoshop or any other software makes you take. A lot of these complaints are just people being too encrusted in a legacy workflow. Photoshop, for example, used to have the same eraser mode as Krita. But modern users are literally too young to know about that

>>8046189>Tell me, why is it that I can pick up any art program and use it immediately without changing much, but with Krita I have to customize so much just to get it to function normally?Because Linux. Seriously, this kind of shit plagues linux programs, the devs are borderline retarded at times.
ive used krita, csp, photoshop and pain tool saiive stuck with krita the longest out of any of them with csp being secondit just werks, its not perfect but it does everything i need. the real kicker was the animation functionality, in csp you have to have the $500 premium edition to animate anything over 24 frames. maybe 3 crashes total in my whole user experience but it autosaves anyway so its not a huge deal regardless. maybe id be less forgiving if it were my first art program, idk

>>8046526Are you using 6.0? Try 5.3 and see if it's still the same.
>>8046560I'm on 5.2.9 and it's been like this forever
>>8046021i use krita and i like it a lot (mostly), but there's a few issues i hate about it a lot:first (and biggest) issue is the built-in "sub-pixel precision" designed for getting smoother brush strokes on lowres canvases that makes the circle brush tool never create perfect circles (important as a pixel artist). the way to fix this is to go into brush settings, find "sharpness", and click the box "align brush to pixel grid", which is not something that a google search will tell you unless you stumble upon the right plebbit thread, and the fact that an important feature is buried under multiple clicks is a reoccurring UI issue with krita. if krita has some shit not working, you must figure it out yourself in the same vein as blender fuckery. enabling this setting must be done with all brushes individually and it doesn't seem to make the ellipse tool draw perfect circles either. and i know if you click shift or some other key makes X = Y but because of "sub pixel precision" it still won't draw a perfect circle always. the ellipse tool is also very hard to get curves right if you want to connect two points with a curve because you cannot reposition an ellipse while you are in the process of making one.krita also seems to have an issue with the posterization tool, which is useful for reducing colors to a set amount if you are trying to simplify an existing image into a convenient color palette. GIMP's indexing tool lets you pick a precise number of colors, but Krita's posterization tool is not consistent with the colors. the lowest setting is 2 yet that will produce 4 colors (black, white, plus two other colors). i don't know why krita's color indexer produces weird colors like yellow/grey/black/white.i like to use krita's "color transfer" tool for turning images into silhouettes for quick edits, but sometimes it doesn't turn every color blue. sometimes there are other colors like a stray pixel of magenta and i'm not sure why.
>>8046680(cont.)krita's color to alpha tool will also sometimes ignore certain colors when set to level 1 (which removes only that color). one color it has issues with is the green line art color in the defaults. my assumption is that some of these colors have rounding errors with RGB values, but that's only a guess.krita also sometimes dies on me. i've had that issue a lot less after switching to the snapstore version though. krita's "crop to content" sometimes won't crop to content and i'll have to manually trim a layer.but overall, krita works and it's free.
>>8046021That it was made in large by a mentally ill troon who lost the ability to code because he took the safe and effective, thus making the project unsustainable into the future. If you think substantial problems are going to be fixed... you might want to think again...

The best AI prompter program, 100000 better than comfyUI. The drawing part is turbo dogshit, the brushes are not even close to PS standards and they don't have niche brushes like CSP does (gpen, real gpen, mapping gpen, huskygpen). OpenCanvas , CSP, PS are all way better than shitta.
Leadership is wonky. There’s no way to know exactly what’s coming, which doesn’t incentivize donations, and the sponsorships don’t seem to benefit anyone. The sponsorship from Intel yielded absolutely nothing worthwhile. It doesn’t help that there are members of the leadership with severe mental health issues. The current roadmap feels lazy. Not much is said. Besides that, Krita is good software. It doesn’t get in my way when I draw, animate, or edit.I would love for there to be better stabilization and dithering algorithms, but those are probably proprietary. What a shame.

>>8048504Art programs are like operating systems. Can you browse your files, play games, and use the internet on any one of them? Yes you can. The differences are in the things that aren't so obvious unless you've been using a particular OS for some time; like installing programs (brushes), Bluetooth configuration (Tablet pressure configs),or getting help when you're confronted with a problem (self-explanatory). What sort of things can you or cannot live with? Do you do animations? Comics? Something more Painterly? Art programs tend to stick to one specific niche that they excel at. CSP is pretty standard for comic creators, and Krita was once billed as a Corel painter competitor. Some prefer the simplicity of Paint Tool SAI, and for pixel artists aseprite is pretty much the king. It's stuff like that. I think most artists shouldn't marry themselves to one program and one program only for the rest of time. Then you get into situations like Adobe being scumbags or CELSYS nuking almost half of the assets store and you're just left there holding the bag. Always have a backup plan is what I'm saying.

>>8050195i literally have no idea what people mean when they say this shit. i switched from csp to krita years ago and dont recall having a difficult time making the switch at all. i think i had to rebind 1 key due to muscle memory from csp but otherwise i used the program as it is. why should it take someone more than 1 day max to get accustomed to operating basic art software? also very ignorant of you to include blender in your list of easy pick up and craft software when blender infamously has an incredibly unintuitive ui that many are filtered by. its seen improvement in the last few years but its still incredibly unwieldy to the point where the stupid donut tutorial is almost mandatory to learn the basics of navigating the thing
>>8050197blender switched to ux that is similar to that of ps and csp, it was a lot more clunky around 2.0 something. what exactly did you do in csp? you can just show a screenshot of your keyboard shortcuts and id be able to tell if you actually have a workflow or if you just use a program like its plug and play and dont use its full capabilities
>>8050202>id be able to tell if you actually have a workflow or if you just use a program like its plug and play and dont use its full capabilitiesseems pretty subjective to me. what constitutes an effective workflow as far as keyboard economy goes? if it works, it works. i primarily use krita's animation functionality so the majority of shit i do with the keyboard is jumping between keyframes. i can do 99% of what i need with the buttons on my stylus and various combinations of space, ctrl and shift. on the rare instance im making a rendered image im only using 3-4 brushes which i can access by clicking a button on the stylus

>>8050607To be honest, i think for most people it's two things. A matter of muscle memory and having that challenged causes friction which immediately makes them ask, why the hell should I have to relearn what already works in other programs, and two, that Krita has the most convoluted ways of going about things that are standard in every other program. Why is it when I want to do a clipping mask, I have to group two layers then fiddle around with some alpha lock bullshit, when in every other program it can be configured to either a key + click, or just button press? Its just small things like that. You're right that it's not even that big of a deal, but it's just small things you take for granted in all other programs that Krita seemingly decided not to do because it wants to be different/is built with some archaic design in mind. The small things compound until you're left asking why TF am I even doing this? The only reason I personally would ever swap to Krita is if windows finally goes full like mode and I'm forced to go Linux, even then I'd probably install wine and try to get csp/ps to run on it. Even then I'd be hoping that those softwares end up with Linux support. Its really as simple as, I learned tools a specific way, I'm not interested in relearning my tools because some program wants to be a quirky chungus when my programs work just as fine and all other programs seem to just get with the program
>>8050760YHWH's strongest goyim
>>8050760>Its really as simple as, I learned tools a specific way, I'm not interested in relearning my tools because some program wants to be a quirky chungusThat's fine. You can decay and wither because Windows and Adobe snapped their extra tight cuffs on your itty bitty nuts. It's not the fault of the dev though. This is pretty concretely a skill issue in your part. The lack of ability to adapt to new methods usually means death.

the one real complaint is that there isn't a "mouse drag brush angle" command, like how there is with the "mouse drag brush size" command. Like where you hold shift and can change the size of the brush by dragging the cursor around.Evidently under the hood it's so fucked up that there's literally no way for them to add something like that without significant rework and I think that's fucking stupid for something so basic. Makes painting a lot more annoying.otherwise I love it and am glad it exists
>>8050810Nta, but similar stance, I'll learn the tools if I ever find myself needing to learn them. I'm not against them simply because I spite Krita, Krita simply does not provide anything of value that makes it worth getting past that initial friction other than being FOSS, which when all you want to do is draw, is not fucking worth it at all. If they offered something legitimately better than other software, I'd use them. They don't. It's once again, that simple. Right now you're essentially arguing that I should use Krita because it's free, that's literally the only argument it has going for it, but in a time where paid programs can be attained for free via cracks, why would I use Krita? It's counter intuitive to literally all other program UX.
>>8051363I'll fucking do it again

>>8046680For pixel art, use Graphicsgale.
>>8051420idk about photoshop but krita brutally mogs csp when it comes to features if you don't count the 3d stuff
another thing I'll bitch about is that they "recently" (within the last few builds) changed how the polygon select tool works in terms of its sensitivity to proximity of vertices and it REALLY fucks with how I paint. It'll close a shape I'm trying to select before I've told it to do so because it assumes the point I'm trying to place is close enough to the starting point that I obviously must be trying to close the shape. It's infuriating, especially since it didn't do this before
Just learned today from some random twitter post that Krita has that feature that crops images so you can split it up for instagram or whatever.
>>8055035can you name any
>>8055357I like how the motif of them thinking they know what's best for the user permeates all of the program. You'd be hard pressed to actually get them to admit they fucked up with that feature since they think they can do no wrong and that it's the users that must adapt
I love Krita, but I find its transformation tools a bit strange. It also lags a lot sometimes, but that might be because my PC is kind of old.Funnily enough, a client bought me CSP, but I haven't learnt how to use it yet.
>>8047518I love it when you 4chan retards start hallucinating and making up movies in your head
>>8055533Once you get over the learning curve of adjusting to a normal ux, you'll fine CSP is far better, and, you'll be able to use most any other digital art/multi media software. Once you make that transition you'll understand how valid many of the complaints about Krita are, and how big of asshats the developers are. Their program is literally a good FOSS alternative kneecapped by their arrogance and stubbornness to make the UX appeal to literally everyone else
dogshit crashes on stupid things that never get fixed, or they just blame your desktop environment. laggy ass brushes when you go above 200 px (SAI will barely lag when you hit 2000 px). stupid malfunctioning shortcut bugs. copy paste bugs, particularly when animating. forgets brush changes when you exit, unless you manually save every single one (no default settings system with auto saving current settings, unless you write a stupid script for it, and it will be dogshit slow because they don't expose if a brush has changed or not from a script, so you have to assume they are all changed).the only redeeming thing is the animation timeline that works like Flash, which is the only reason i ever crack open this abortion of a program
>>8055554This.Also canvas size causes lag despite brush size staying the same
>>8050617>I think Tatyana Kupriyanova has some great works that show what krita can dothis bitch traces over ai
>>8055543It's a pity CSP doesn't work on Linux. There are several guides to make it work, but none of them worked for me.
>>8055396Neat. It really does have a lot of useful yet hidden features
>>8047518he's right. Birds and insects look impressive, because we aren't used enough to see small proportion errors and they require the most simple shapes. That's why many teachers let their students draw said birds and insects. Humans and horses is where it is at.Still a vibe of a pic. I like it. The eye is well done.

The devs frequently dismiss UX complaints with the attitude that their idiosyncratic system is superior and users just need to adapt. Until they pull a Blender 2.8 and prioritize standard workflow conventions, moving between Krita and actual industry standard tools will stay an unnecessary headache that limits Krita as a hobbyist/toy program limited to Linux users and people who don't know how to get cracked versions of industry software. You can't expect people to take your software seriously if you can't even do the bare minimum of making it actually function how people expect it to be function.
Naggers, fork the repo, ask Claude to modify the software to address your specific qualms, nag is free, send patches.
>>8055844no i think i'll just do art on a program that was made for artists instead
>>8055838>The devs frequently dismiss UX complaints with the attitude that their idiosyncratic system is superior and users just need to adaptThat's the problem with linux in general, so used to doing customizations or accepting limitations they do not realize that the majority of the population just want a good smooth experience.

>>8046021I fucking hate Krita's documentation. It reads more like a developer that's obsessed with showing off their tool and its technical achievements rather than teaching the user how to fucking use the tool.
This fucker is the thing I hate the most about krita, every time I have an issue with krita and I go to the krita forums to look for a solution, this fucker is ALWAYS replying pure bullshit, NEVER the actual solution, either some bullshit workaround or acting like you're retarded for even questioning god and saviour krita.also I fucking hate that profile picture that is in every fuckass reply, He must have been genetically bred by adobe to fuck with everyone not buying their shit. This is not all, he has not posted a SINGLE artwork since joining the forum in 2021.STATS:Joined Apr 7, 202138.3k topics viewed224k posts read11.9k posts created2.0k days visited7mon read timeDespite this, he has only 414 solutions.I'm certain when people talk about krita users being obnoxious when replying to any issue they want to fix, they must have read a reply of this dude.I'm also sure that this guy has made a lot of people wanting to use krita just leave.I don't like him.
>>8057260while he might be annoying, he is actually trying to help, unlike youon topic, i've actually grown to like kirta. the brush engine is far better than ps, some features like the popup menu are amazing and it even works on tablet. that far outdoes the negatives such as limited filesize, less robustness and ugly ui.also i take pic rel over corporate bros any day

>>8060025>does it work fine?you need a specific wine version: caffe-9.2 (a bottles environment makes this much easier to do)earlier versions of wine have the memory issue, and later versions break tablets/wintab/windows ink or whatever the hell wine does under the hood. this specific version is like the goldilocks zone.sometimes this doesn't even work for some people, depending on their distro, and whatever dependent versions libs it provides that wine dynamic links to (libc, etc).of course, it will always work in a VM, but that's no fun at all.
I just use it cause it works the best natively on Linux. If something else comes along that's better I'll switch but I'm gonna keep grinding away on Krita until then. Personally my favorite program was SAI on windows.
>>8057822I hate Krita. Despise it. Would rather run my hand through a meat grinder than use this piece of shit program. HOWEVER. I cannot overstate, how much I fucking loathe vibe coded slopware that claims to be a 1:1 clone being shilled everywhere as some hero to artists. Uh, no. You can go fuck yourself. If I could only choose between that and krita, I would run my hands and testicles through the meat grinder that is Krita before I use that piece of shit slopclone. A disgrace and a herald of the incoming fetid ouroborus of shit that mars the horizon.
>>8060268I used to use paint.NET on windows but pinta sucks on linux so I learned krita. I would pirate CSP but I don't trust running pirate exe's anymore.
>>8060025https://github.com/parka6060/CSPenguin-InstallerDon't bother setting everything up yourself, it's a huge hassle.
>>8060014How did you get SAI to work? For me, it keeps erroring out on "persisting the history file" or something.I followed the instructions on wineHQ, tried different versions of wine, tried the bottle/caffe9.2 thing (fuck, bottle is such obnoxious begware - they beg on their website, want you to download random crap, then they beg again on opening the app), and i tried a recent SAI2, and 2019 SAI2, and even SAI1 (which doesnt want to start without admin rights). Could get nothing to fucking work, CrapGPT is no help either.
>>8060306The error is "harmless" in that it wont crash the program but things like history loading from opening a file doesn't work, nor does auto-backup. You can switch that off in SAI's settings to silence the error. You are basically most of the way there if you got the program open and that was the only error you saw.For SAI1, I found that it doesn't work well; The UI gets messed up or stops repainting and other things, so I'd just stick to SAI2. If you still want to try though, I think you could install SAI1 in a VM, and then copy the unpacked SAI directory back out to your host.
>>8060268Same. I use Krita on Linux and CSP on Windows.>>8060303>>8060025>>8060032NTA. I tried that guide and several others but none worked, though maybe it was because I was trying to install a pirated version. Maybe with a legit version it would work.
>>8056360This fork is proof that the Krita devs are too egotistical to swallow their pride and adopt normal ux conventions. Ridiculous that some random can add in a feature as basic as clipping masks but Krita insists you use their alpha inheritance layer grouping bullshit
>>8060324>normal ux conventionsPlease tell me what "normal" ux conventions are? Do you want all software to be like Photoshop? A piece of software that's basically unchanged from the 90s?
>>8046021lack of assistants that would aid my workflow. like they have an angle measure tool, but it's fucking useless. it measures angles from a verticle or horizontal line and disappears as soon as you click anything else, what would be even better is an angle assistant. you have 3 points that set the angle's origin and extremities for the two rays allowing you to mark any possible angle that stays on screen when you switch to other tools and that you can set to a specific angle, such as 90 degrees, 60 degrees, 22.5 degrees ect. i have seen over the past decade that multiple people have requested something like an angle assistant and it's just be ignored.an ellipse tool where you mark the center of the circle and then set your major and minor axis from there would also be useful.
>>8060324Thats the beauty of Krita though you can fork and customize it to your hearts content
>>8060596People don't want customization. They want a good default layout.
>>8046201as much i love kirita, even with the phtoshop ability, the fact that they didn't switch default shortcuts to industry standards really is sad. But again, there is way to switch the shortcuts
>>8046523to this day, krita still dosen't have good audio integration for lipsync
>>8060537....uh yeah that's literally the point yes. People who regularly use art softwares use them to create not tinker around with settings to wrestle them into doing what all other programs do out the box
>>8060771The shortcut preset doesn't change the UX experience, they still don't have things like clipping masks, a weird eraser, weird brushes, weird zoom tool, etc. I've tried giving Krita a go because it's always shilled here, it just feels bad compared to everything else. The Krita revamped fork someone shared on here is probably the closest Krita has ever felt to all other programs I've used, and it's a bittersweet pill because why the fuck can't the devs just do this? Oh that's right, because their egos are too massive and insist artists relearn a software rather than just make art
>>8060777>People who regularly use art softwares use them to createWell you obviously don't, since everything you need to "create" in Krita is right there. Only some tinkerfaggots are getting mad they can't find the vector tool or whatever the fuck (haven't read the documentation)
>>8057997Have you tried lowering the ram allocation for CSP? I think having it set too high ruins performance.
>>8060865What's the best percentage? I have it set to 80% (15gb) right now, I lowered it from 95% because I did have issues with csp freezing after a while when working on a canvas with a lot of layers while having a lot of files open.
>>8060868I'm not sure, you could try halving it closer to 8gb and see if it's any better. Undo levels also have an impact on performance as well I believe.
