For people who have studied Bridgeman how did you do it? Do you know every muscle you're looking at ahead of time?

You copy his drawings, but make sure not to read the text because youll be wasting your time if you do so

>every muscle
Not "every muscle" but certainly "muscle groups" and basic anatomy notions are very useful to navigate those "artistic interpretations" of the human anatomy. You should "shut your brain" and just copy the pictures, just let it flow. It's a totally valid art exercise, it can give you "artistic fluidity", if you just relax and just draw what you see. Don't try to "understand it" , you can do that later, with other anatomy courses and tutorials. This is an "artistic" exercise.

just draw fat girls and dont worry about it

I did that Bridgman thing, and I kinda rushed through it because I have some anatomy knowledge already. I reckon that it can be pretty freaking hard for someone who doesn't have much notion about anatomy.
But I don't thing this work to learn anatomy, but to get you into the "artistic portray" of the human figure. Much in the same line as the gesture figures of Vilppu. Just put you mind in blank and copy what you see.

he's commenting on your liberal and unhinged use of quotation marks.

Just copy the book twice.

My opinions on the books should be taken with a grain of salt, since I'm still early on in the book, but I'm studying by just doing studies of all the drawings (bar particularly bad or pointless ones), whilst keeping the topic of the chapter in mind.
I plan on only going through once, as I'm always studying through different books.

As for the muscles and anatomy, while I'm sure (rather, I know) Bridgman does teach that, I feel like he teaches a lot more.
In the earlier sections that I'm currently going through, I feel like the lessons I'm getting is a more advanced 'mannequin' for drafting the figure, as well as learning to both exaggerate the figure, and not be so precious with them.
Many of bridges figures are so lumpy and exaggerated, they should be wrong, and yet they still look like they could easily turn into a realistic figure.

All this said, I don't think other's opinions on 'how to study Bridgman' are wrong, whether it's Proko or Finch, I just think that is one way of looking at studying from Bridgman's work, and you'll probably gleam different lessons from the book whilst studying from those perspectives.

Search my profile for “Bridgman”. I just copied all the pictures, simple as that. He’ll show you what all the muscles are, better that it’s up to you to figure out how to best break down the muscles groups into simple shapes you can remember. And that’s the easy part. The hard party’s later looking at photos of actual people and trying to make out landmarks and muscles under skin, bone, and fat.

Goddammit I hate my phone’s autocorrect bullshit.

Just focus on drawing everything and rendering it well.

There's an app called "anatomy learning 3d" and 30 dollars for the whole atlas of muscles.
I wouldn't be shilling this if it weren't for the fact that I got it about a year and a half ago and I'm still pulling it up every time I study bridgman. It was a more fruitful 30 dollars I have spent than I have on most other books.

You can find some free stuff on sketchfab that's fairly useful, if you don't want to shell out the $30.
Here's a quick collection I found: https://sketchfab.com/introspection/collections/artist-anatomy-78a27f13a5064f61be1ca3e1325382e8
I'm sure if you spent more than a single minute, you'd find far more.

assuming you're using drawing from life or some book. look at picture, read what he says, look back at the picture. you cant understand it all so its up to your interpretation. or just trace it easiest way

I just try to copy the basic structure and when I get to the details ask "does this look right?"

Ah, this must be the containment thread. Nice. I doubt there's a single "right" way to do it. For some of the book I've done almost pure observation and for some of it I've done construction. For this one I treated it more like his drawing is a photo of a model, with the goal of doing a figure drawing rather than a 1:1 copy. Refining in passes (which didn't all make it to their own layer). I think the central rough figure (~45 min) mostly works, though it definitely shows off some of my bad habits and my bias for fat asses and broad shoulders in dudes. And then I uploaded a pic of the ref and "fixed" it before rendering because idk

What I've found is that when I draw from photos/life, the parts of the figure I've studied from Bridge Man work a hell of a lot better than the parts I haven't. Like in this drawing, the hips are pretty messed up in my final now that I look at it. But I've already spent 3 hours total on it and prefer to move on. Should I have skipped ahead to the pelvis before drawing all those hands? Probably

If you're dumb enough to want to draw the whole book, it's a nice scaffold on which to experiment with different materials and approaches. But I'm sure it's wiser to just treat it as a reference for whichever parts of the body you're lacking on
