Why You Should Copy Anime:

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Lets all try to stay in the containment thread this time.

It's nice to see the prebeg and beginners general is still active.

The days of anime needing a containment thread are long over. Anime runs the board now.
I think this thread still has a purpose though, since doing anime copies is such a common exercise

what do I do if I can't decide on a model? I want someone who draws loli, but many I like don't seem to share their sketches or simplified drawing styles so it's incredibly difficult to study them as a supreme beginner.
>>
Tried copying them using guidelines then did them by memory; it's so hard to get the anime head shape. I always think about trying to draw a real face silhouette;

I tried human face -> anime and it was terrible.
>>
>>8049176
that method is too hard for a supreme beginner
>>
>>8049325
Also tried copying Okinawa's body but I still can't point what is wrong even though my copy looks like a broken ragdoll
>>
>>8049328
what should I do then? ive been drawing for four months or so.
>>
>>8049338
I personally copied a ton of taco1704's tuts during my first year. took some good mileage out of that
>>
>>8049176
Try all of them and filter them down based on personal compatibility (feels easier to draw in the style and understand what the artist is doing) and the style allowing you to create the media you want to create.
You can always change it later too since you'll have more knowledge to base the decisions on, the EXP won't be lost. 4 months is enough to start if you've been copying some anime art already. If not then start copying an artist first (along with copying hide channel's croquis playlist).

>>8049353
Not Japanese art. Hopefully you didn't take anything fundamental out of it to base your drawing style on.
>>
>>8049362
>to base your drawing style on
I think I did lol but making my drawings look like a jap did it is not my goal. so long as the art is appealing I don't care if it's from malaysia or taiwan or wherever else
but regardless, his tutorials are mostly anatomy related so it's probably useful for anyone
>>
>>8049375
>making my drawings look like a jap did it is not my goal
I thought this was the anime general?
Also it's not about where it's from but the techniques used to create the art, it's just that legit full-on anime drawn by a non-Japanese person is still a pretty rare thing in the world (even if it gets slightly more common as you get geographically closer to Japan).

Try to understand the actual shape of the head, how it looks flat and in 3d. If you look at the flat shapes, theyre almost all the same, it makes it easier to replicate and draw from memory. You can do the same for the body

Vagabond Study. i dont know what i was thinking last night, by starting and maybe even finishing to study/copy a whole volume or chapter of Vagabond, but after like 7 hours i couldnt even get the panel size right, let alone capture Takezos likeness (second to last panel) and now i got some thick callous on me thumb. it was an interesting endurance experiment though, i think i'll try focusing on non-painted, singled out pages in the future

As a thesis I'm not sure copying anime is the way to go. Anime is drawn by people who did extensive life drawings and study. if you copy anime instead of real life then the art will just degenerate.

how can you understand it by copying it? That's just a line by line copy approach. its really easy to fall into the trap of becoming a human copy machine.

the better approach would be to take the design/drawing/style and redraw the same thing from a different angle and ideally different pose.
>>
>>8051009
Did you even read the description
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork
Im not even disagreeing, just doing a 1:1 line by line copy is probably not very beneficial you need to do it in a way that you can replicate out of your head, but that is what is recomended here anyway

am i retarded? i picked imamura because there's a hundred copycats but i have no idea what i should be even doing. i'm not learning anything from simply copying, should i be breaking his art down into simpler shapes? how should i do it? i'm too autistic to guess by myself
>>
>>8051021
Imamura has an intuitive sense of 3d space, which is only gainable from mastery of life drawing so drawing from 3d (life drawing) is the best approach

both. just mix up your studies and work towards your goal. some basic understanding of anatomy should exist so you know what the simplifed lines represent or what you've drawn. granted, life drawing and realism will give you a better observation skill, due to its complexity, but it also takes a lot longer to get right.

I'll ask for advice here: what is the ideal studying vs drawing from imagination ratio?
>>
>>8051225
what do you mean by drawing from imagination? If you mean just making your own original pieces then I guess Id say 50/50 maybe
>>
>>8051230
uncompleted and completed pieces yes.
>>
although I guess it depends, when youre starting out its probably better to weight studying higher a bit. As long as you dont just fall into the study trap where youre not actually making anything then its probably fine

This behavior is prevalent in the discord too. I can't find a single place where I can improve in peace. It's either troons, or toxic narcissists who draw well but not perfect but still act high and mighty over those who are just beginning or learn slower.

I think the thing that trips me up the most as someone whose experimenting with anime style after drawing cartoons mainly is the facial proportion/ eye size

So far every time I sketch a face I need to adjust the eyes down more before it looks "right"
I've only been at it for less than a week though so it's just a matter of building that eye for it
>>
>>8049413
thanks I tried it and I'm still testing. I found an artist I like and will probably use him as a reference for other copies.
>>
>>8051510
the main struggle is going to be unlearning all the bad drawing technique caused by cartoons' obsession about simplified shapes and learning to actually draw full quality anime shapes.
doesn't help that even those that attempt anime in the west are infected by this mind virus so if you don't know JP or aren't just extremely based and redpilled it's hard to leave the bubble.

I couldnt stop laughing at how bad my study came out. Love csm early part 2/ part 1 art style. Going to have to try this again lol
>>
>>8051773
you must be new to drawing, but dynamic drawing is actually really hard to do right without reference. artist needs to practice drawing dynamic mannequins without reference, which he doesn't do. he hopes to absorb it through osmosis, but trust me (cause i've done it) it's a really slow process. there are just so many decisions you need to make, like what pose and which angle, in what environment, for what purpose. even if you could draw anything, you still need to decide and settle.
>>
>>8051773
no hes just a moron who grinds figures like a mindless zombie and never learns how to apply it to his actual art
>>
>>8051778
wtf literally me
>>
>>8051770
i guess its the eye size. yesterday was an off day
>>
>>8051773
Not every figure drawing needs to be super-dynamic. But if you feel you have this problem in your own work, it is likely because you are not starting with a strong gesture.
As others have noted, the only way to prove you understand figure drawing is to do so without reference. This is not being anti-reference. There are just things you are not forced to consider when you use them.
There are many video examples here of starting with a pose before building out the structure.
