Gave up, I'm done. 10pgs in the span of 3 days(6 done today). Of course, this was only possible because they were scribbles, I don't have the skill or patience to elevate them any further.
I don't think I improved at all doing this, but the speed of my output was baffling. I think the easiest way to elevate my skill is drawing from imagination, which I've been trying to do for the last month with no success. The only panels that were remotely readable were the referenceslop and even they were ass. Oh and hair, I still can't figure it out.
Regarding the panels, I just did whatever I thought was neat. I especially liked brainstorming the ferris wheel one and the death scenes.

Story wise, it was probably too ambitious. The original premise was a groundhog day with the protagonist surviving 2 yanderes (one physically abusive/spiritual and the other socially+psychologically/real). The protagonist would have learned to survive the multiple forms of the ghost, tame her kinda, become stronger mentally, while slowly discovering the web his girlfriend has placed him in(social isolation, dependence etc)
Execution wise, it was terrible. I'm just no good at dialogue, and fitting it into these little ass panels was so annoying. Obviously the art was dogshit, and there were no supporting characters.

It was fun and I loved brainstorming, but I'll have to come back to making comics when I git gud. Back to grinding figs.

but more importantly, what prompted him to draw retarded shit later in life if he drew like that in his teens?
>>
>>8049352
He felt that simply copying reality was uncreative so he wanted to paint in abstract.
I don't get the hate for Picasso, he was someone who went out of his way to paint what he wanted instead of conforming to standards held during his time. It's not his fault people wanted to money launder his paintings after his death.

To keep it simple, consider the viewerโ€™s eye level as the horizon line. In the case of photography, the viewer is essentially the camera. So honestly, you have some leeway when considering where the horizon line is. Why? Because since the figure is organic, you can move things around a bit and theyโ€™re still going to read fine. As a rule of thumb, most of those reference packs are shot around sternum height, so the horizon line will probably be somewhere around that area.

>>8049194
Damn dude, that hand page is really good! Youโ€™ve been progressing steadily and learning from your previous posts. Great job, keep going. As for the story, donโ€™t worry about it being juvenile or cringe. Most stories are like that. Just keep writing, focus on your promises and payoffs, and youโ€™ll be good. Sandersonโ€™s lectures are really good for that.

Cool work, anon. The texture is really nice, I like it, some observations
-You can use longer hair to avoid the negative shapes around the traps and armor.
-The arms look like baby arms, too short.
-The face looks a little too wide. If you narrow her left side, I think it reads as cuter and creates the overlap where the eye meets the nose ridge.
-While itโ€™s probably not anatomically accurate, I think the overlap under the chin can help create a more solid looking neck.
Keep in mind that the eye doesn't foreshorten that much. What you're seeing is the overlap of the nose and eye.
Not a fix, but rather a way to convey what Iโ€™m talking about. Great job, keep going!

Making a little progress. Was almost bang on for the proportions for the one on the right until I messed up the jaw at the very end, basically because I was incorrect about the degree of convergence for the vertical lines.
Left one again was going really good up until the size of the jaw, again I think basically due to perspective issues. Iโ€™m always chronically overestimating or underestimating how fast lines should converge and how much of an effect perspective should actually have in a given situation. Really hard to hit it right on the money. I have some ideas to implement for next time though to try and prevent the same mistakes from happening again.
I do feel like I learned something this time. Gonna keep doing angles from above for a while before I tackle angles from below again.

Trying out some brushes. Theres something crucial I'm missing figures. I can picture poses perfectly in my head, but the instant I try to portray it, it crumbles. I don't even think my copies are helping, I'm just haphazardly replicating them. I'm even sticking to just the ribcage and pelvis. I think its rectangles, I just can't fucking draw them. I can't even copy 2d properly, kept making the waist too long and then lassoed it right at the end; it lost all of its appeal and doesn't have a fraction of the eroticism of the original.

Ye, I've had issues with rendering and backgrounds. The pose was a imagine draw, and I tend to draw out the start well but slowly fall and get narrow-sighted at the end like pic. Also you're too focused on the sketch when the lines and rendering is what makes the refs youre copying work. The pelvis and torso boxes method dont work because you have to memorize perfectly what the angles are for every pose you want, it's non-intuitive

How else am I going to learn how to draw from imagination? I've used other methods for drawing stuff, but they really only work when looking at a reference. hello fellahs. how do you think the shading was done here on the ref. what brush, what order of actions. I'm seeing both hard and soft edges here, in some parts the changes in color are soft, in other it's abrupt. did the artist use an opacity pressure brush, or paint a darker tone on top of a lighter one gradually, or maybe some sort of a blending brush. maybe he used multiple brushes? that'd be awful for me. anyways what's the process here

just a multiply layer with dark red color for the shadows, i would just put down the big shadow shapes first (like the left leg) then carve out some details by erasing (like the right leg) I used a round brush with opacity for both coloring and erasing and the originial artist likely did too. For the highlights its justa normal layer with a brighter color

i rushed mine but with a bit more time you can make the shapes look better

i did most of the bigger shadow shapes in one stroke, you can use lasso too if you want
you can also just fix it afterwards by maybe using smudge and smudging the smaller spillings

I still believe the original artist did it that way too.
Red = there is a small darker shadow spot on the shirt, likely caused by brushing over twice
Blue = Here the darker shadow under his chest probably was the 2nd brushover

I actually didn't even intend for those to be her pecs, but more so that section of skin and fat that leads up to the breasts. I ended up making the breasts themselves way too low though which did make them look just like pecs. I think I've somewhat remedied this last night. I'm also redrawing the shoulder piece because it was out of perspective. But yeah, what you said makes sense. I think you could probably get away with some indication of pecs if the breasts are saggy enough, sorta like you did there. Either way, thank you for pointing it out.

I'd also like to draw my lines with more confidence. I've tried many times, but I always end up with crooked jagged lines.

I come here from time to time, post a drawing I've done recently, and ask for advice or suggestions on areas I should focus on. It seems to be a good method so far to keep improving. Last time, I was told that my faces that aren't straight and facing forward weren't very good; I hope I've done better. I've also tried to improve my hair, but it's something I just can't seem to get right.

First of all you have artistic talent, so doing the grind will end up in excellent results for you. Just trust the process. I can tell you're in the "copying" phase, wich is necessary to develop your eye to hand coordination ability and muscle memory. Then you will have to commit to some construction method, or keep copying posing figures ad-nauseam, it's the only way to build that mental library you need.
It is clear that in your drawings there's a "room/space restriction", drawing traditionally usually does that. The size restriction of the media (paper sheet) skews your drawing proportions in different ways, like in the taxi driver one, his body looks realistic, but his head looks almost cartoony, because you want to add a level of detail to his face that the size of the drawing doesn't quite allow you to do. So you over-compensate and you add more detail than necessary, and more detail requires "more size", so you unconsciously draw his head bigger, it sucks when your mind does that, without you even noticing it. That's why in art ateliers students draw in BIG sheets of paper, A3 size or bigger, so your mind doesn't have any excuses to translate proportion as you need to. The same benefit you get by drawing digitally, the infinite canvas is really good to fix that, you don't do a head or legs smaller, you just add more canvas.
Just keep drawing no matter what, do at least a doodle every day in your little sketchbook and you'll get there for sure.

My right now it to perfectly draw similarly to @NoahDoesArt in terms of detailed hatching/lineart and technical skill.
He's fast as shit when it comes to sketching in general and his art just intuitively looks 3d and organic compared to how flat and stiff mine looks no matter how much I try.
I never studies fundamentals seriously and I'm only starting those days btw.

Thanks, Anon. I'll think about giving portraits a try. Before your other comment, I wasn't really sure what was holding me back from drawing faces.

>>8050407
This is easily the best comment and advice I've received. I really appreciate it, Anon. I'd never thought about paper size, and you're absolutely right. I use A4 paper, and my drawings are usually no larger than 4-5 inches. I was thinking about the other Anon's previous comment about starting with portraits, but I think maybe I should start with construction and digital drawing. I have a Galaxy Tab S10+ that I've never used for drawing, maybe a couple of times, but I didn't know what canvas size to use (you already answered that), and what brush I should use and its resolution in relation to the canvas. I mean, I don't want the lines to be too thin and low resolution, but also not so large that it uses up too much canvas size and RAM. I have Infinite Painter, and the Proko Pencil seems like the one I should use, but I'm not entirely comfortable with it.

Honestly, I only opened it because of the daily messages of people asking for free art, then the messages stopped after a while.
Sometimes, once or twice a month, someone sends a request offering some bucks ($60~90), and if it's not too difficult, I accept.
It's nice, the only downside is that it takes up to two months to receive the money through pixiv.

Damn. At least it seems like it protects your privacy more than the others who full doxx you.
>>
>>8050704
Since it's a jap plataform they highly value privacy, and have some rules such as not bothering the artist with messages after sending the request (however, some people disregard this).
There's a minimum request value too(I think around $45), and there's also the pixiv fee, which is around 10%, but it's very safe; there's no way for someone to scam you since the all the money stays with pixiv until you send the drawing to the person

>For the past two years, Iโ€™ve mostly been "drawing" lines, boxes, and cylinders.
Why? Do you have a goal in mind with the boxes and cylinders? Or do you sort of view it like practicing the same punch 10000 times?
I did draw a box, I liked it, but when I got to the box drawing part I drew like 3 boxes and moved on, I felt it would be a waste of time to grind boxes until I got perfect ones every time.

I can't draw what I want to, so I draw boxes and cylinders. The goal is to force myself to draw every day and practice the so-called "fundamentals."

>>
>>8050668
how long is this gonna go on?

>>8050583
amazing.
>>
>>8050963
You are engaging with practice in a very sheep like manner, drawing boxes and cylinders is not a task that yields endless improvement. What happened is that you learned how to draw a box and cylinder, now you can draw a box and a cylinder now, gj. So move on, and don't force yourself to draw the same thing over and over like that as if something will magically happen, it won't.

What do you want to draw? How many times have you attempted to draw what you want to draw?
Your goal isn't to one shot what you want to draw first attempt by mastering all the fundamentals.
Your goal is to try to draw what you want, fail, look at the abomination, and try to figure out what's wrong, then try again. Any one attempt only has to look less worse than your past attempts, if it does, that's progress, and you've hopefully learned something.

Draw a sphere for the skull and a quick paper-like structure for the face that wraps around the sphere and tapers down into a V shape for the chin.

The top of the eyes is roughly the halfway point of the face, the bottom of the nose is the next halfway point following the mouth that sits between.

Pick any rotation in this gif, trace once, remove trace and draw from reference, your goal should be 80% accuracy, place trace over drawn reference and make notes on were the proportions went wrong. Repeat process until satisfied, and move on to next head rotation.

Hard mode: After drawing from reference, if you reach a satisfactory accuracy point, draw head angle from imagination.

Use the tool. You can always practice making straight lines another time.
>>
>>8051455
You are better off using things in the picture to reference the angles instead of just free aiming them. Like you can get a good idea of the vanishing point if you take either the pictures in the wall or the table and see where they meet. The most important thing is to get the VP as acurrate as you can, you can use a ruler for sure.

Thanks for the response. That curve of the abdomen was the first line I drew, everything came out from that. It definitely made her look younger than I initially intended, but I decided not to go back and rework it since I was just testing and experimenting. I'm curious to see what your attempt looked like. I don't seem to have been banned, I guess it just got deleted. But maybe you can share it off-site somehow if nude figures are a problem. I didn't know, I assumed it was fine since it's just a nude figure drawing.

Is it better to draw a bunch of different things with wide variety, or stay on one subject?
>>
>>
>>8051797
As with pretty much everything, it depends. If you don't have a specific thing you're working on right now, or you have been working on one thing and just need a break, then draw anything that piques your interest. If you have a specific goal that you're working towards, or you've identified a specific thing in your art that you need to work on, then focus on that (eg. you suck at drawing torsos, so draw a bunch of torsos from reference, memory, imagination, etc.). Deciding which way to go is something you have to figure out for yourself

Still pretty fucked on these. Itโ€™s so hard to keep things balanced when the head is only slightly turned to one side. The almost-symmetrical-but-not-quite angles always fuck me.
The proportions on the extreme top down angle were way off (for the other two the jaw proportions were pretty bang on so that was nice). I know how to find the size of the jaw precisely using Robertsonโ€™s rectangle duplication method, itโ€™s just a matter of being careful enough when drawing the construction lines.
So I need to do more of these slight-turn angles, and also more extreme top down and bottom up angles to practice find the jaw proportions in those cases.

I missed this. Work sucks and itโ€™s draining, so what Iโ€™ve been doing is making drawing as convenient and frictionless as possible. For me, that means drawing traditionally and choosing a single art book, either physically or on my phone. Just a mechanical pencil or ballpoint pen, some printer paper, and a clipboard. Hay degenerates.
I'm planning to buy a pic of a "space cop" alien girl (she started as just a "test dummy" to demonstrate another alien's abilities and powers, but I couldn't help but flesh her out, and now, I guess, a second commish will be in order).

I am pretty sure I've nailed the basic idea of her physical looks.

But when it comes to her clothes, I am going to appeal to the masses. Would her undershirt look better "vac-packed," making it like a second skin? Or stretched out over her melons, leaving "air pockets"?

I want to use my ipad pro and procreate, but I would like to ask for people also maybe using it. Is there any big advice you would give someone, who really can't draw and wants to learn it with procreate? I can be brushes, maybe tutorials, books etc.

4 hours is a good amount of time for a study, but for production, I don't think so. Your painting looks overworked, so I'm sure that if you start working with a better workflow, you can reduce the time to under 2 hours. From what I see from pros, once they lock in the big shapes, everything gets faster. Also, do timed work. How much can you do in 10 minutes? Where are you wasting time? record yourself

>>8052562

I just feel so rundown and defeated by this shit man. After avoiding construction for years Iโ€™m FINALLY giving it an honesty try and I am getting better at it butโ€ฆ itโ€™s still just so frustrating. I understand why I never got results from it before, because you have to be EXTREMELY precise otherwise the whole thing just falls apart.
Make an ellipse bulge a little too much or draw a line not quite straight and the mistake just snowballs and throws the whole drawing off. Picrel was actually pretty bang on and I was happy with it, but the bottom of the jaw still went a little too far just because I didnโ€™t draw a couple lines perfectly straight. In this case if I actually finished the drawing and drew a real head it probably wouldnโ€™t matter much in the end, but in other drawings the same types of mistakes cause huge problems (especially if they happen earlier in the process and the mistakes just start compounding at each step).
Now you might be saying โ€œyeah, thatโ€™s why you keep your eyes open and see if it looks right and make corrections if it looks wrongโ€, but, I feel like if I could do that then I wouldnโ€™t need to rely on construction in the first place lol. If I had good intuition for what the end product should look like then I would just draw it directly instead of doing all the autismo intermediate steps. But itโ€™s hard to check if all the autismo intermediate steps are correct because I lack intuition. Itโ€™s a catch 22.
Iโ€™m not really looking for advice, Iโ€™m just venting. Iโ€™m going to keep using this method. I do need to shake it up though so I am just going to start drawing full skulls and see how it goes. The whole point of learning this is to be able to draw skulls so I may as well just dive into it instead of getting lost in the sauce with the wireframes. I also begrudgingly need to start mixing in some skull studies from reference. I HATE drawing from reference, feels like more pressure oddly, but I hope it will build intuition.
>>
>>8052690
>, I feel like if I could do that then I wouldnโ€™t need to rely on construction in the first place lol.
nod really. The difference is frieren and having an eye that is slightly off. If the base is somewhat solid, the range of adjustment gets narrowed. The amount of autism (as lines on a canvas) necessary diminishes over time; your ability to draw these lines translates to your understanding of them.

>i feel like no youtube video ever shows the workflow for anything, its allways someone trying to sell something.
Yeah, that's why I don't really watch channels that are focused on education. Thats their business, and there's nothing wrong with that, but still...
What I try to do instead is find streams or interviews with professional artists where they're just drawing and talking about their process. How do you find those?
I use imdb, myanimelist, x, gpt, bilibili, youtube, and ending credits. I look for art directors, artists, etc.

Some people I've found this way:
https://www.youtube.com/@yoshidaseiji
https://www.youtube.com/@yoshikadu
https://www.youtube.com/@AlainPicard

For example, from this one I picked up the habit of using temporal layers:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0hGefr79AE

And from this one, I got the basic workflow I use for drawing backgrounds:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsMBCIetiR0

But the important thing is to actually draw and try new stuff: the lasso tool, gradient tool, masking, etc.

The guidelines in red do not align well. I think the complexity is working against you.
>because you have to be EXTREMELY precise
Only certain things need to be precise. Alignment/positioning tends to need precision,or at least be logical, while the shapes themselves can be a little looser than you expect.
>mistakes just start compounding at each step
This is why I recommend starting with a single larger shape and dividing it, rather than trying to build something out of compound shapes like the sphere and cone. When you divide, mistakes become smaller and smaller.
Instead of trying to replicate Loomis, start by asking yourself "what are the proportions I want this face to have?" Nail that down first, then build your construction to fit that idea. The construction should serve your drawing, not the other way around.

>how long have you been drawing "seriously"
One year by now I think. First image I have on twitter is from October 18 so I might've just crossed the one year mark a few days ago since I did start drawing on a sketchbook first for a little bit before I got a tablet.

I'll be honest I have total brainrot syndrome. I tried reading many books but I just couldn't get past the first few pages most of the time. I did however obsess over drawing for the first five months or so after I started drawing seriously, wherein I would sometimes draw for 8 to 12 hours in a day. That period was rough, emotionally speaking. I would draw for 4 hours, feel like I got nowhere and made something I wasn't proud of, which would then send me into an autistic daze where I would draw for many more hours hoping I'd make something I would actually be happy with. I still wouldn't, most of the time, and would just cry until I didn't have any more energy and would head to bed. It was like that almost every day until little by little I started to make drawings that made me at least a little bit proud at the time. From then on the emotional load became a lot more bearable.

As to methodology and what I did during those hours, it was a mixture of copying from artists whose art I liked and drawing original stuff (but still using some amount of reference most of the time). I tried doing a few exercises here and there, but 95% of the time I was either copying or trying to create something. All and all I think my perfectionism, autism and ADHD medication did most of the heavy lifting, I just had to endure the emotional torment and not give up. I wouldn't recommend drawing for more than 8 hours a day though. I had back pains, sleep deprivation and a bunch of other stuff for a while. That coupled with stress at work made me require such a high dosage of medication that now my liver's having trouble functioning and I feel sick if I eat any sizeable portion of food. So yeah just copy stuff from people you admire, draw original stuff sometimes and be strict on yourself, but don't overdo it. Sorry for the essay lol

>>
>>8053294
Because it's impossible for one person to respond twice to the same poster? Stupid little boy.

saar, redeem the new thread, saar

Sorry. Just trying to be helpful. I understand that this comes across and egocentric and pretentious, but I remember thinking "what wouldn't I give to be able to scan an artist's head and read his thoughts so I could understand what worked for him", so I just want to lay it all bare in the event that it helps a few people. Being silent helps no one.

>>8053258
Yeah, I really does feel like it made a difference. I don't like the idea of incentivizing people to get into medication, but if you have ADHD I think it could be worth it. This type of stuff is super expensive here and it's where pretty much all of the money from my job goes, but between being broke and being able to learn how to draw versus having a little bit of money but being unproductive, 10/10 times I would choose the former.

Why the mods never ban the schizos? Not a single board does it im kind of curious to know if the jannies or mods themselfs are the schizos at this point.
>>
>>8053364
They do, you have to actually report their posts.

Being annoying isn't against the rules, I assume, so they have free rein
>>
>>8053396
It technically falls under low quality, but the only board I've ever seen enforce that rule is /a/.
>>
>get really excited about creative project
>realise that nobody will ever see it and that nobody i know irl cares about it and I will die without anyone seeing the fruits of my labour
>get motivation
how do i go full hermit autist mode and box myself into a project that nobody will care about. I enjoy drawing but if i spend prolonged amounts of time (1 week+) on a single project Iโ€™ll slowly lose the will to carry on and retreat back into low stakes easy sketches
>>
>>8053416
woops
lose motivation*
>>
>>8053416
You just have to work with things that you personally like and like to look at. You'll see that everyone here has that one main thing they draw. Mechs, cute girls, boys, and so on. For me it's monster girls and big tiddies.

>>8053403
I lean authoritarian myself, but you don't need the police most of the time. You can always just hide and not engage. If women can do it, so can /beg. I just accept that it comes with the territory, the drawbacks and advantages of anonymity.

>>8053338
get no replies anyway, so why bother?

This place is dead, and so are the other art communities if you're not talented or already made it.
I'm glad AI will make this all irrelevant soon.
