>draw from imagination>struggle every step of the way and end result isn't that impressive>draw using reference>quality skyrocketsSo that's how you do it huh
>>8050169>draw using reference>quality skyrockets>So that's how you do it huhThis isn't a secret. Literally every fucking drawing book, every user on this site, EVERYONE says this! Why are you acting like this is a big discovery? You just stopped being a dumbass. That said, it's nice to be able to draw from memory or imagination, but that's a skill that's cultivated over a long time of using references, and are you going to sit around waiting for that skill to develop before drawing a single picture?
ALWAYS USE REFERENCE
Okay but how do use use references effectively though?
It's a shortcut. And the end result is modern mangas look so soulless and generic from CSP 3D model garbage.
>>8050169I have made it so that I have projects where I don't use references (most personal works) and projects where I use references (most professional works). That way I can have best of both worlds
>>8050201who do so many people conflate the use of references with tracing?

>>8050169Wait until you try this new tool called generative AI, then your art will really reach the next level.

I have the opposite experience. I am aware on some level that it is just a skill issue, probably hyperfocusing on details or something but drawing from a reference tends to produce worse results for me. I also just study and do figure drawing a ton which probably gave me enough of a visual library over the years to get by without.
>>8050169yes? are you retarded?
Draw roughly to get ideas, then refine the ones you like.
>>8050169But if you want to create, sooner or later there will be things without a reference. A dynamic pose, an hard angle, a dragon, a cool background...I am still stuck at learning figure drawing. It's just impossible.
>>8050327didn't norman rockwell use a projector and basically draw and paint over his photo references?
>>8050169Literally everyone knows that you should use reference wherever possible. You still want to be able to draw purely from imagination so that you’re not totally chained to reference, though
I'm absolutely garbage regardless, but I actually get better results drawing purely from imagination than I do drawing from life.
