The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work. That said, everyone is welcome here.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

>Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material. They do not contract creators; they’re only interested in publishing original content for which you would retain all rights.
>Image Comics publishes creator-owned/creator-generated properties and THEY DON’T PAY PAGE RATES. Image takes a small flat fee off the books published, and it will be the responsibility of the creators to determine the division of the remaining pay between their creative team members.

> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/pages/submissions is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.

Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.

Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEBzCr_kNns
Mainly because I see how some anons on here get picky about needing to get some special manga/comic book paper and honest to god you dont need to. You just really need something thats durable and can take a beating, otherwise you dont gotta go out of your way to get some Japanese imports. The worst you gotta deal with is having to measure the dimensions that you need to draw on said paper cause on the shelf Bristol aint gonna have book measurements/ratios but after you do it for one or two pages you can just trace that page on top of the Bristol/Cardstock/whatever and get to work. Like I have a 9X12 inch Bristol pad and I only gotta cut around half an inch of it and I get the standard page size for my comic

Why have you've been using the Nipponese language for this btw? I thought this was a personal comic like the Knight one, you got a publisher for this? Or do you got an actual audience of Japs?
>>
>The issues that you are complaining about only ever arise when you DO decide to print out a physical copy, and if you really care the solution for that would be just splitting the image down the middle and you just shift/shimmy the two images to their corresponding side and just take into account the spine.

It's not as simple as just putting things here and there after they are complete. You have to avoid putting valuable things in the spine such as dialogue, or an important panel, which you won't know unless you're sure of the page orientations (this includes planning two page spreads) everything needs to be considered from beginning to end. Which page is on the left, which one is on the right, and so on. Even things like page numbers, otherwise you'll be in big trouble when you do.

>>8054553
This allergy to buying reams of paper once or twice a year is silly to me. Is it really that much trouble?

It’s funny how much shit Mark got from IC and other places back in the day and occasionally now, but looking back at his Brody’s Ghost work he has accomplished way more with his art both professionally and technically than all 3 Australians here combined. Kinda based ngl

>>8054642

Crabs are gonna crab, which sucks cause the reason why I still follow him after all these years cause hes one of the few authors who just fucking tells you how doing this comic shit works. I see these fluff pieces from fucking Viz or Kodansha try to spout out philosophy about how "Its okay to be rough as long as the idea is good" or some hack on Youtube try to sell you a course but Mark just fucking tells you throughout the course of his videos what it actually takes to get published and what the standards are and you can look at his published catalogue for reference on that, and while Im sure he has some dedicated fans he aint even a FAMOUS author. Successful sure but not a big name especially compared to the names that get constantly posted on here, so its kind of a realistic point of reference for me to compare with my works. Like I aint reading his Akiko series cause it aint my cup of tea but the art like pic related is still worth analyzing for me cause I can see that this is the expected quality of a childrens comic, and Brody's Ghost for Teen comics/manga etc. and he has some vid breaking down his stories for reference.
Like its so useful to see him in essence create Brody's Ghost in real time cause you see him explaining the thought process for the creation of the series as the story went on through his videos/tutorials. Its easy for even a great author to tell you the grand stories of creating a story after the fact but seeing the shit in real time is really useful and helps me at least understand the struggles as I create my own comic
>>
>>8054553
The problem with paper is that you actually have to know the paper before can be really sure that it's good enough for you. And usually good paper is very expensive here. So you can't just easily test the paper and find the best which fits to you.

IC manga manuscript is relatively cheap and every professional manga artist uses it so it's normal that it's the go to paper most people want to have.
>>
>>8054642
I've been posting on a board with 3 Australians? Who are they?
>>
It's better not to post anythign here. Anything you post will just get taken apart by some retarded smartass who thinks he knows everything better anyway.

Anyways, I agree with the other anon's thoughts on Mark Crilley. He's an oldfag but he's one of the few who actually shows the damn process and explains in plain English, which is very insightful.
>>
>>8054673
I am not new here. I just don't like posting my stuff on imageboards because imageboards are full of retards who only use it as an opportunity to put themselves above you. It doesn't matter how good you are.
>>
>>8054678
The video which got posted here already starts with nonsense
>supplies are 10% at most which matters
Complete bullshit. A shitty paper can easily ruin your whole work. Any decent artist knows this. Supplies DO matter. It just depends on what your standards are. If you have shitty standards then you also can draw on cardboard but if you want to produce professional quality then you also need a good paper.

This is bait but I'll bite. If this were really true, almost every Shonen mangaka alive would not cite Toriyama's manga with such reverence during their artistic journey. Not to mention the fact that even long after his death, his works in Dragon ball and Chronotrigger and Dragon Quest remains as a relevant cultural icon in the anime industry despite being over 4 decades old at this point. While some of his anatomy or designs you are free to critique, saying that he couldn't draw very well seems hyperbolic. What have you accomplished?

Go help Shihei Lin to overtake the old and busted Jump.

"They've had meetings and discussions with foreign creators so they're open to them being on the platform but language and cultural barriers sre still a problem.

Weekly and biweekly is the way to go for digital platforms. Easier to retain and build up a readership than monthly.

Won't axe a series for a while initially until the #of series grows and they'll decide the fate of a series by tracking number of pages read, number of readers who complete a series, and the positive feedback through thumbs up rating. Comments don't seem to be a factor

Starting with 10 series and having 20 by end of the year. Wants to publish 40-50 oneshots a year.

Mixgreen will handle supervision and production of anime adaptations and merchandise for spyxfamily, dandadan, witchriv and centuria. There's no plans for the authors of those works to publish oneshots on their platform yet.

Mixgreen app will be initially for the japanese and no launch date yet. Finalizing an agreement with a global partner(who isn't a publisher) to sell the works internationally. Will vary country to country if they'll distribute it themselves or leave it to a local publisher.

App will be free initial reading, rental for rereading and volumes available for purchase."

I dunno, I've always used sakura microns, and some people hate those and find them unusable. I've found them to work fine on printer paper. I find most paper has quirks, even among "premium" art or comic paper. Only thing I find is you can't just douse printer paper with ink from a brush pen or something.

While I dont pander to readers(to be fair I assume I have none) I dont make my work for specifically myself either. I like to think that some kid out there needs to hear this story that Im making and I keep that in mind when writing. If I were writing completely for my own sake Id probably shoot myself cause the last thing I need is to repeat life lessons back at myself. Id say its less "pandering" and more trying to find my own people. Like you know how every book you find on a shelf almost always has a "Dedicated to my wife/my parents/my kid/etc" at the beginning? Im thinking of whoever that person is when making my shit
>>
You should remember that every official manga you like was made with pandering to an audience in mind. Not completely, the author has to somewhat enjoy the work, but still...
>>
>>8054745
What you fucking retard don't understand is that what works for you doesn't necessarily work for everyone else. The paper you can use depends on what you want to do. If you want to use shitty copy machien paper then do it but don#t force it on everyone else.
>>
>>8054749
>I only read retarded mainstream shit manchildren and you should do too
There are many manga artists who simply draw what they like you waste of oxygen. That's the difference between art and entertainment but you obviously have no idea about art.
>>
What's the point?
>>
>>8054733
>>8054745
As the anon who was shilling shit like Bristol earlier I cant use printer paper for my comics, at least not with the micron pens. The ink gets absorbed and spreads easily and causes unintended effects like I could be using an 03 pen and the marks that I make would end up looking like I used an 05 or 08 cause it took too much ink.
Granted thats for basic ass printer paper I know that there are different grades. Like if I had easy access to the paper they use in those fancy artbooks it probably take the ink from the microns better then the ones that are meant for basic office/school use

You're not going to convince me you only read underground obscure manga nobody cares about and also somehow think its the greatest thing ever.

Frieren, Bleach, Chainsaw Man, One Punch Man, Dandadan, My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen, etc etc. You must like at least ONE of these works and we both know its more than one. Also, even if you don't like any of those... how do oyu know these obscure manga you like aren't made with an audience in mind? Just because they're obscure? That's an immature way of thinking.
>I make it for myself
This is also immature. It's like throwing a wedding or birthday party for yourself and then smugly stating you don't care if anyone comes. That defeats the whole purpose of having a party in the first place. Just keep your manga in your head if its "only for myself"
