But they didn't draw anime?

The nine old men of Disney were the greatest craftsmen of the golden age, though in terms of Warners, Tex Avery and Bob Clampett were the greatest geniuses, Chuck Jones was great, but kinda overrated. The 1940s was hands down when western animation peaked in quality, every short and movie from that period is high art.
>>
Why did animators of the time look so swarthy?
Compared to the rest of the country, which was much more anglo adjacent
>>
>>8055727
Has to be Avery, Fleischer studios invented tons of animation and cartooning principles, and Disney invented stronger, detailed construction and appeal, Avery basically combined the two by doing Disney-level animation with Fleischer-level cartooning while embracing the surrealism. He was the most influential cartoonist of that period.

If we’re being real John was probably the weakest of the Spumco cartoonists, Jim Smith was the GOAT

Why did Eric Bauza give up animation for voice acting? He's a great voice actor but I don't see why he couldn't do both.
>>
Chuck Jones was more innovative but I like Bob Clampet more.
>>
While on the topic of cartooning as an art form, I sometimes wonder what 19th century caricaturists would think of golden age cartoonists. Guys like Tex Avery essentially perfected the art of caricature with all the animation principles and such developed.

shut the fuck up racist cunt

That's faux-american-style.

Art teacher are the hacks who couldnt make it. Like Salieri to Mozart or Phil Jackson to Jordan. We're talking about GOATs here not their personal nannys.
>>
>>8055946
Don Bluth is good but come the fuck on, Looney Tunes shorts are timeless comedies for a reason, the artists behind them had unmatched talent.
>>
>>8055753
They were known as the 'the thrillas from manilla... paper, that is.'

Jones has the dubious distinction of creating such an economical style that it shaped much of animation going forward into the Silver Age with UPA and Filmation and Hanna-Barberra in the 70's...it doesn't ruin Jones' work for me, but I see what would come later every time I view his classic era short films.
>>
>>8055946
Is Don Bluth a pedo?
>>
>>8055946
don bluth has the zeural problem of god-like animation talent wasted on a dogshit artstyle

I like Jones early 50s work, the last great thing he made was the Grinch special, after the 60s is when his art started to look ugly.
>>

Yeah

>pantsu shot scene on the front page
not just "pantsu" but -Loli-pantsu- to add more insult to it. These people are beyond repair.
>>
>>8056014
It was.
>>
>>8056256
You can tell Dr. Seuss ruined him.
>>
>>8056396
It was moreso Jones attempt at copying Disney cuteness. He was the most pro-Disney of the classic LT directors.
>>
>>8056256
>the last great thing he made was the Grinch special
Was this Freleng's last hurrah in animation? I know Gene Siskel liked a late 80's early 90's Daffy Duck compilation movie, but not sure who made that or what the title was.
>>
>>8056256
It's hard for me to judge Jones' work because his most feted cartoons (One Froggy Evening, What's Opera, Doc? etc.) are not my own favourites but those more understated or "horror" themed shorts (like whenever he is making use of that witch!) always made a deep impression on me, so seeing him evolve toward Disney is really hard to take, but maybe it was a challenge to Jones' animators to go further since he was always a major proponent of highly specialised expressions.

Certainly not an american. Japan animation was way more interesting in the 80s and 90s than anythign america ever did.

all great starting points for your argument, they might even settle the argument.

winsor mccay mogs 99% of animators and he didnt even have anything to reference
>>
If we’re being real here, the best animator depends on what type of art you see as the gold standard.

John K might be a reprehensible human being, but he is a genius when it comes to cartoons, and he stated how there’s two types of cartoonists, and he doesn’t mean this terms in a political sense, but an artistic one:

>visually conservative artists
Think guys like the Nine Old Men of Disney, who mainly emulated real life in their own stylized ways

>visually liberal artists
Think guys like the Fleischers, Clampett, or Avery who mainly sought to push reality

I feel like this philosophy mirrors the fine art world as well, you got artistically conservative artists like Da Vinci and Michelangelo and visually liberal artists like Dali, both kinds have their own displays of talent, and it’s up to the viewer of which is better.
>>
Does western animation have its own equivalent to Da Vinci? Like a polymathic artist with mastery of the medium?
>>
>>8056256
Frelengs art degraded even worse.
