What kind of job do you guys have that let's you sketch/draw at work? I always see people post works that they say were drawn during work but I've never had a job that gave enough downtime to do sketches. I'm hoping once I get my degree I can just find a desk/remote job and just draw whenever.

It's not about what kind of job you do, but what can you do with a few free minutes. If you have 2 minutes, draw a doodle. and that's it. A nice doodle per day can be good enough to keep you contempt "artistically".
And it doesn't matter "how good" your doodle is. Eventually you will get gud at that one little thing you do every day.

drawing is my work

I did the JET program and lived in Japan for 5 years
It was the cushiest of cushy jobs
You would "work" maybe 2 hours a day, which amounted to reading English from text books, being excitable and playing classroom games.
The rest of the day you're expected to stay at your desk in case someone needs something from you.
I used the time to draw and learn game dev stuff - and a small bit of conversational Japanese
Was chill as fuck, I would go drinking with teachers every few days and had a built in group of friends because westerners would stick together
And JET paid for my apartment and car so I had barely any bills to pay
Maaan I miss that job, now I rarely get free time

Why does Miyazaki always wear an apron? It's not like he will get dirty from drawing? Does it make him more productive by getting mentally into work mode?

I WFH most of the month as a dev. Ironically I use AI to do most of my work, after setting all the prompts up it usually takes around 20-30 min to spit out the task I give it which happens several times a day giving me gaps where I can do other stuff.

people who "draw" at work are not serious about it. they're just doodling for 5 minutes at a time while their focus is somewhere else. They draw for fun and as an escape from wagery, not because they need to.

I get like 5 hours of drawing in at work sometimes from books, figure drawing, and videos

Damn I work at a medical supplier and only get 4 hours of drawing time every shift
>>
I'm a first aid attendant. I'm pretty much left to my own devices while I wait for someone to get hurt. It's very common for a shift to go by with zero patients, so I get a lot of free time to do whatever.

I used to work in the animation industry, I've been an EMT, Patient care tech, automotive technician, and now I work in a cafeteria, I'm recently married with a kid on the way. You could say it's over fellas.

what a waste of talent

true, just cant stop nutting in my wife, and I kind of gave up on making it in the industry I spent my entire twenty's chasing becoming a concept artist, and it worked for a while, but I make more making quesadillas in a hospital and have insurance. I hate my life, but I wasn't happy constantly fighting to stay afloat in the industry either. Art became a chore that consumed my entire life. I'm just not happy either way. The industry has always been hard, but It has gotten even worse because of the obvious. I'll always make art, but I've given up and came back to it over and over again. I'm sure I'll regret having a kind, but I honestly am so checked out of life, I'm just like, fuck it, nothing matters I don't care I'm not doing anything with my life anyway. I tried, it didn't work out. maybe next life.
>>
>>8057584
Well, it may just be consolation but if your kid ever has an interest in art you'll be able to give him or her a head start early. I have a similar idea, I started art way too late at 30yo (during covid lockdowns) and at this point I am starting to see the writing on the wall at 36 that I'm probably not going to get good enough to matter. I have a nephew coming along and I will impart all my fundies knowledge to him if he ever shows any inclination with the pencil.

I did sorting at the post office got to draw during down times probably a hour or 2 per day on average more during the summer less during the winter
>>
Firsties are so lucky they can draw at work. Truly a daycare for adults.

A couple months ago someone tripped and hit their shin against a particularly rough railing that cut right into the leg. Luckily there's not much between the surface and bone on the front of your calf but it left a pretty chunky flap of skin hanging (proper term is an avulsion) about 6cm long.

Thankfully the guy was smart enough to put pressure on the wound and by the time I arrived on scene the bleeding had already stopped. Doused it in saline, slapped some pads on it, wrapped it up with bandages and sent him to the hospital for stitches.

But the most interesting patient I've had was someone who came in with a bruised arm, but for some reason or another could not remember anything about himself other than his name.

it can be, it can also suck ifyou got managers that have it out for you. but thankfully you almost never see them

school substitute is another if you can stomach it. tons of downtime to draw but you have to be able to control a classroom
>>
i'm an accountant and get a full hour for lunch
i usually eat my lunch in like 20 minutes, so i've been spending the remaining 40 either practicing or just doodling on my ipad

I'm a wfh programmer so I only work like 1 hr per day. The funny thing is I'm the only guy that knows what's going on and I push the majority of the code. I think everyone is just so lazy now they can't be fucked to even read what AI generates. They all spend so much time trying to figure out the perfect prompts when they could just read the code and ask specifically for what they want.

I like your sketches... but are those really enough for the industry? Was it video games?

Here's the kind of stuff I put in my portfolio
https://sites.google.com/view/simon-contreras/

I've worked on contract and full time in animation and games off and on over the past 6 years. so idk I stopped asking if I'm good enough and just applied to places, and if they bit, I did work.

Yeah I love my wife, and I love the life we have together. I say that understanding that I am willing to put the 10 years I spent pursuing art seriously as a career in the dumpster. She doesn't want me to give up on my dreams and is happy to help were she can, but I realize that especially with a kid on the way, I need stability. We make it by ok right now, but I would like to make more in order to provide a better life for both of them.
