Can people who aren't gifted or talented learn how to draw? I mean, people who aren't born with the ability to visualize or otherwise lack spatial reasoning, or other genes that make art come easily to someone.

STOP MAKING THESE STUPID THREADS YOU STUPID FUCK

I need some help and this is the first thread I've made on this topic? Chill.

Anyone can learn to draw. The biggest obstacle that prevents non-gifted would-be artists is that most artists make for bad teachers and either go "just draw lmao" without explaining WHAT EXACTLY TO DO or push constructive drawing (drawabox, KJG, most of the books /ic/ suggests on charts) despite it being the worst possible thing for a beginner to be exposed to.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSUXnHvV_8M

Drawing comes down to a few things:

>line control/quality (confident lines, using your shoulder and elbow, a proper grip) and accuracy exercises
>continuous line drawing
>gesture drawing
>drawing basic shapes and simple forms
>spending more time looking at your reference than your paper

Pic related is what I drew today. I was not able to do this three years ago.

Everyone can learn to draw you fucking retard. But the skill ceiling in drawing is so high and steep that not everyone can be a good artist.

Even if you are able to draw well by magical wonder, this still doesn't mean that you are a good artist because good artists don't just draw well, they are also incredibly productive which is a whole other level. Most people have no idea how difficult it is to get to such level.

What do I do if I can't intuitively identify contours? I never have any idea what I should or shouldn't be marking with lines. Bounding something's silhouette with lines is obvious enough, but after that I tend to end up making random marks inside of it in the hope that something will start to look right (which thus far has never happened.)

So basically you gotta separate the technical side from the ideation.
The technical side the mechanics of drawing, stuff like knowing your tools, understanding how light and shadow create forms, composition, color theory. That side is pretty straight forward(although time consuming) to learn. Any tutorial you can find will help you with this. My tip is drawing what is actually there via observation instead of drawing what you think is there.
The ideation side is a bit more tough, it's basically stuff like taste, differentiating what is good/bad, knowing what to draw. That's the part that takes a whole lifetime to learn and it constantly changes.
The technical side also informs this, as you learn to replicate forms you will start seeing the faults in your previous drawings, which is great because you are improving.
So all in all, talent is not something you either have or don't, it is comprised out of a lot of factors, including how much you draw, how serious you are about getting better, the way you grew up, what you found important, how much you worked on a skill, how much of your daily life can be applied to it.
Some people are good artists because they had the opportunity to express themselves in a visual medium while growing up.
So yes, probably anyone can learn to draw.

thank you

The average person is literally mentally disabled. They could never become a good artist.

You need have at least a certain level of intelligence and logic to good at this.
>>
>>8059571
Probably yes, but you will need a long time, and that's why you had to start when you were 4 years old.

I dunno, but it's fun to try anyway. I like these dudes, this is how 12 y/o me probably wanted to look as an adult

Struggling with contours is a common problem that beginners face. What helped me was doing blind contours, cross contours, and modified contours. If you're specifically talking about wrapping lines over forms, then you can study wireframes or take a marker and draw wrapping lines around fruits and cups.

You may also do meaningful tracing (lightly sketch over the shapes that your ref is made of, study them, then hide the ref and draw from memory). What helps this especially is taking the time to just draw all sorts of shapes. Everything is made of shapes so the more time you spend drawing shapes and observing your reference (and the shapes it is made out of), the easier it is to reproduce the reference.

Start off with something simple like Kirby or a Pokemon with minimal details like Luvdisc.

My spacial reasoning skills are abysmal dogshit. I literally do just good enough to accomplish my goals, but everything about my abilities are terrible. The thing is if you want anything you just have to power through it even if that means you won't be a master, if it's enough to meet your goals then you don't have to be one.
>>
>>8059571
Talent is just a measure of how intuitively you can pick up a skill, it's completely possible to match it with sheer brute force and effort
>>
>>8059576
/ic/ jannies are literal pedos and literal niggers and literal furries, based on the list leaked by based sharty 'ackers
do you expect these to be of any value lmao

By mentally insane puriteen zoomgroid standards "literal pedo" means they allow ambiguously aged anime girls to be posted and "literal furries" means the same thing but anthropomorphic animals. Kill yourself.
>>
>>8061121
Talent cant be constructed from primitive principles
>>
>>8061121
Bullshit. Really talented artists are unachievable for most people. Talent is a mix of having the right genes/living in the right environment/having the right work ethic.
>>
What midwits don't understand is art is a combination of many many different skills and your brain can naturally work the way that picks up some better and some worse
>the way you perceive colors
>spatial reasoning
>seeing and understanding shapes
>perceiving human faces and bodies
>visual memory
>hand eye coordination
>visualisation
>sense of style and appeal
etc. etc.
You can be better in some areas and worse in others. Good artists you see just found their strength and play around their weaknesses. For instance I see a lot of begs upset they can't draw any pose from imagination while good artists they admire don't even bother with it and just copy references 1-1 for everything, completely forgoing having to construct visual library, imagine pose and perspective, remember anatomy, project lighting.
There's only a handful of people who get born with brains hardwired to quickly pick up every skill in art. And there's only a handful of people who lack everything needed for art.
Chances are you have the same level of talent as someone making thousands on patreon, you just don't know how to work around your weaknesses and play into your strength.
>>
I will not be baited into attacking your retarded strawman, I will simply direct you to hitler as the ultimate example that lack of talent cannot be overcome with intelligence.

Ultimately the only way to determine talent is after somebody has already made it or given up.

Hitler was extremely talented. The only reason he got rejected was that his subject matter didn't line up with the school's purpose and he didn't have enough course credits to get into the school of architecture, which would have had use for his skills in painting buildings.

short answer: no
long answer: yes

hitler was comically dumb though, most /pol/ heroes are retards that succeeded by being very appealing to other retards

I think he was pretty good for someone living in poverty without training, trying to actually start his formal learning. His portrait work mogs everyone here, that's the plain truth.

Now THIS sounds like biased ideology leaking through, this is bait

you can learn the mechanics of drawing. What's harder is coming up with ideas and interesting things to draw.
>just draw the same thing forever
you can't. When you get to the point where you no longer wonder how to draw something, you only want to draw things that are interesting and creative.
>>
>>8059756
for countours you definetely want to start reading kimon nicholaides natural way to draw. it's a bit tedious book but it helps a lot, just have some courage and go through it with honesty.
