i've gotten comfortable enough in my artistic abilities to share my SFW artworks with family members that i don't typically engage with, mainly my aunt who's living the rural christian housewife life in montana, whom i don't think i've ever been close to at any point in time, but i visit yearly as a vacation. My uncle considers my starship designs to be useless purely because they cannot be built in real life, so he doesn't see any value in art or creative fiction and i don't engage with him at all anymore. My aunt, however, seems pretty supportive but she has some pretty outdated views on what art is like. She suggested that i become a graphic designer or concept artist, but i told her that industry jobs have been dead since AI became a thing and most artists who aren't sloppers go freelance and build an audience on social media with HD files on paysites. But i also mentioned that not only am i not skilled enough to do that, but i genuinely don't desire monetization of my art if it meant limiting my audience or spending most of my time drawing art for other people, and i'd much rather get some soul-crushing 9-to-5 if it meant being stable, although no one really gets job security now anyways (perhaps it's a moot point).i don't understand the Gen X mindset of turning every hobby into a career, especially for fields like art which were never really financially stable BEFORE the slop-pocalypse, and has been made even worse by the growing number of third worlders with access to the internet and much cheaper cost of living than northern california...when he was still alive, my dad freaked out that i was spending a few hundred dollars of (my own money) on digital art commissions, since he seemed to think that only physical media is worth paying for, even though that means allocating space for it and preventing wear and tear (of which PNGs and .blend files are immune)
You need professional help. Not /ic/.
>>8062318I second this notion.Your designs are also dated. Check out Starsector if you want an idea of where the state of the art is with this sort of art asset.
cool you can commune with your aunt, i love seeing your ships, adore everything sci fi, think it’s just too awesome that you can commission to have them realized in 3d, (it’s like the ultimate fanart, hard-surface version,) and hope designing them keeps being as fun for you as it is for me to see them when you post. the designs are wonderful.>to answer the itt, i don’t interact with my family very much, but we’re all on very good terms. i keep my work to myself, but they ask whenever i see them, and i’ve caved a few times.
You are building a practical portfolio. I can see your designs being useful for game development, especially since they have simple shapes easily converted to pixel art assets. It might be worthwhile to spend an afternoon looking at RPGMaker for its suitability for making use of your art.
>>8062313gen x grew up with rage against the machine, if you could beat the man without working for the man you were peak cool, there was a time where you could viably turn your hobby into a business (bowling alley, skateboard shop, rollerskate rink, etc.) but now everything is super saturated because people want stable returns since the cost of living is only going up year over year and private equity leeched its way into traditional hobbyist activities
>>8062313Dude who fucking cares. You sound super annoying and lame. I bet your aunt hates you
>>8062431I don't want to be too disparaging to OP, but it's really not useful at all actually. It's a very *very* narrow slice of design skills, and not even that good at it. Making shapes and floorplans is the pre-sketch phase. It takes piles and piles more work to turn that into an actual usable asset. Any designer worth anything can do it as an afterthought. It's just not something anyone is going to pay for as a job, let alone as fine art- which is what people give patreonbux for. That isn't to say give up or whatever, OP, but your little niche you boxed yourself into isn't actually a niche, you actually just resigned yourself to being barely a step up from ideas guy, which is barely a step up from useless. Everyone has ideas, go challenge yourself if you want to be taken seriously.
>>8062571I see a direction for his art to be pointed in, what market suggests itself. And Retro Space Sim was the first idea. I also see his art as chunks of bigger works. The left is a bit of machinery that I would set aside in a folder and build other tech bits, then transform, filter and cobble them into what is wanted. The right silhouette is the shell of a spaceship that the game mechanics operates within. Simulating a game with it would make a good portfolio piece.
>>8062313your family's right, you are a delusional fucking faggot hiding his lack of skill behind a shitty muh style while posturing as a """technical artist""" and you are a blight upon this board
>>8062663>just a lurker, but i love you anon.
>>8062695his designs are dope asf, but if they’re not your thing, maybe just keep scrolling next time, or maybe you’re just trolling or raging to let off steam or something, i guess this is 4chan. ship guy makes the site a cooler place for sure. sorry for random posting
I'm related to real architectural artists and car concept artists who retired after making a living drawing car handles or whatever the fuck and I'm sitting here drawing anime
>>8062783never cuckpost while replying to me again, nigger
I usually avoid talking about my work to people irl. You'll rarely get the reaction you want. It's just not worth it.
>>8062313as the other anon said, your op image would rank below almost everything available in vanilla starsector let alone the freaky shit that modders make, heres some aislop to illustratelearn to make your stuff better by kitbashing first, you'll quickly realize just how much detail and shading goes into individual parts, then use what you learned
>>8062313I think what you say makes sense and it was interesting to read. I like your designs, there's some comfy feel to it. I guess I would like them to be an element of something else, like a game, that allows you to unlock parts of the ship and click into cabins where hot pixel-art cuties talk to you, like in those old date sim games.
Set yourself up with a project that is game related. I mentioned RPGMaker, and how it would be wise to get it and poke at it. Now I'll suggest this...Look at the sprite assets and study how they are made, then try building something for that game engine with your own art. It need not be perfect, or even good, but it needs to enlighten you to what is needed for future works so you can plan around those requirements.
>>8062571>>8062695i never claimed that my art was on the level of professionals, in fact that is precisely why i found my aunt's comment weird, because the threshhold for "good enough" for pro work is really quite high, and my abilities are indeed quite narrow, but this doesn't stop literally everyone i know from saying "OMG you should go pro!".that being said, i do consider myself a genuine technical artist, but not because of any inherent ability or skill, but because i pay attention to detail like anatomical accuracy and smart layout for floor plans. it bugs me to no end to see god-tier artists who can render out perpsective illustrations casually forgetting to include restrooms or stairs between decks in their ships, or not drawing the same character with the same number of fingers between pieces. i don't really know how you get to that point and still make those mistakes.>>8062828KYS sloptard
>>8063323technical means you can actually draw, you dumb nigger, not that you're fucking autistic
>>8063323What you do is low technical, high design, not "technical art". Any retard can make up floor plans, there's nothing technical about it, you literally can't even draw three dimensional objects.
>>8063323That’s not what technical art is. Technical art is art, but with technology. Shaders and math shit. You are doing the ideas guy job. That’s not really sought after or respected by anyone.
The problem is obviously this...All you bitches have been crabbing it up for so long together that your periods synchronized and everyone is on the fucking rag. I think we all can get past the Not Ready for the Pros argument because even OP agrees he ain't. So the guy needs useful advice. Not the Mean Girls table.
>>8063369You are OP and the only person here even alluding to pros. You are not a technical artist.
>>8063369>be pre/beg/>shit up the board with your pre/beg/ delusions of grandeur and seething at your family>noooooooooo you can't be mean to me wtflearn to draw and stop posturing, ideacuck
>>8063332since when is attention to minutia a bad thing when it comes to art? art is literally THE autist hobby.>>8063381i'm OP, >>8063369 is not. you are insane
>>8062828brutal
>>8062313what kind of autism is this
>>8063403>since when is attention to minutiaI would argue you really don't pay as close attention to detail as you think you do, and this is why what you're doing is bad. Grab a copy of Halo: Warfleet or one of Hans Jenssen's Star Wars books. You can layout rooms, congrats, you've designed 1% of a ship, where's the rest? Where's the plumbing? Where's the conduits? Where's the hydraulics and distributor pumps that power all the doors? Where's the HVAC and the air scrubbers? How is the paneling on the floor laid out and why? If you want to do technical drawings, do technical drawings, don't just draw half-assed D&D maps. You're not being savant-autistic, you're being retard-autistic.
>>8063450is that AI?
>>8063452Ink and gouache, boyo
>>8062828id kms
>>8063381Not OP, just someone that finds insults unproductive.
at least your aunt respects art. treating art like a hobby first is actually why artists can't make good money out of it i the first place. you deserve to be replaced by the third-worlders you complain about.
