I bought a sketchbook and a few pencils, I have a cheap Wacom tablet on the way as well as the Keys to Drawing book. I really want to draw. However, I am insanely scared that if I start drawing I won't get better. And then after hundreds of hours of drawing and trying to learn (fundamentals) I will still be shit.
When I look at beginners, they can already draw a bit. My level is literally zero, I have no talent, nothing. I want to draw but I am too scared.

My advice is to trick your brain by saying is just a qucik placeholder that doesn't matter and needs to be done quick.

If you trick your brain you don't need to be good, that removes part of the heavy burden of perfectionism.

>When I look at beginners, they can already draw a bit.

Yeah, probably because they actually have already drawn a bit. "Beginner" ranges from straight up starting from zeroes like you to people that have been drawing for a while now but still make mistakes and have a lot of things to tighten up. Nobody started with any inner secrets about art that you don't have access to. It's a cliche, but comparison really is the thief of joy in this hobby.

You gotta put yourself back into 5 year old mode and just go for it without anyone's approval or any shame holding you back. Save everything you make that's more than mindless doodling and look back through them a few months down the road.

In my experience, stagnation is usually a behavioral/mental problem rather than a lack of inherent ability. If you draw with reasonable consistency (at least a few sessions a week), focus on observing your subjects (ALWAYS use references when trying to learn btw), and just give it your best, it's incredibly unlikely that you won't see a shred of progress as a beginner. But I can say it's 100% certain that you'll never improve if you don't draw.

And if you don't start now you'll never get better. So do it.

Why the fuck are you interested in drawing if you don't like it then? Find another hobby

That fear is weakness trying to protect itself.
>>

starting from zero is fine. if a sketchbook is too intimidating just draw on loose leaf and put the loose pages in your sketchbook/throw them away if they're bad
>>

Every once in a while people make these really relatable threads and it holds up a mirror to me and makes me realize I'm being silly and overthinking it and I should just go for it. And then I still don't draw and the fear builds back up anyway.

>I am insanely scared that if I start drawing I won't get better.
That fear will come true, you don't get better for a while. Drawing is weird in that you have periods of seeing zero (zero) improvement and then suddenly you see that a big leap in skill took place seemingly overnight. EVERY experienced artist I've talked to has been thru that "huh when the fuck did I get good enough to pull that off?" moment. So draw knowing that the thing you fear will come true, but then it'll just stop.

>And then after hundreds of hours of drawing and trying to learn (fundamentals) I will still be shit.
This fear will also come true. I've been drawing for several years and I'm still only around high /beg/ low /int/. But I'm still much better than I was before, even if still shit. The hours will pile up and you will still be shit, but sucking ass for a shitload of time is a no-skip part of the process. Sometimes I look at art made by currently established artists and they often sucked for years, another common thing is seeing a handful of terrible art following by years of radio silence and then they come back good all of a sudden (the years in radio silence were likely their training arc lol). So, learn to embrace that fear, because its a realistic fear and nothing unusual.

>When I look at beginners, they can already draw a bit. My level is literally zero
Before their skill was 0.1, it was also zero.

>I have no talent, nothing
Drawing is a single skill but a collection of a lot of skills. Anatomy, drawftmanship, understanding of color and value, composition, perspective and a long etc. You WILL surely be talented at one aspect of drawing, you will also surely suck ass at an aspect of drawing, and you'll be average at a ton of other of the skills that are a part of drawing. There does not exist a perfectly talented or untalented person because absolutes are not real. Learn to draw afraid. But draw.

The key is being happy with your current abilities and wanting to create more of what you're confident can already create.

Next step is challenging yourself and leaving your comfort zone. Without mistake, you will improve without even thinking about it. If you chase improvements like a maniac you will burn out.
>>
what the hell is wrong with you people. who the heck is afraid of drawing? literally stop being weird and just do things.

>I am insanely scared that if I start drawing I won't get better.
A therapist would ask you where that idea comes from and how not drawing would not result to the outcome you fear.

It is my personal recommendation to seek another hobby. This hobby requires commitment, you are either willing to do it or not. The mid /beg/ and /int/ plateaus are also brutal and you are already anxious. Art requires you to face yourself, your own mediocrity.

Not OP but for me, I think my fear of drawing and creating in general (yes I'm the millionth wannabe gamedev faggot on this site) comes from worrying about cheating and not improving in a perfectly linear minmaxxed way. I don't want to get a template and mess around doing random shit for fun because that's not what a "real artist" would do but starting from nothing but blank emptiness feels overwhelming and confusing.

me when someone just says study anatomy
???
HOW?

>EVERY experienced artist I've talked to has been thru that "huh when the fuck did I get good enough to pull that off?" moment
I don't want to partake in the rest of the discussion, but drawing ability really just relies on some subconscious mental process. All you have to do is to activate it, and when it's active, you can draw.
The problem is that there's no reliable way to activate it for a beginner artist. And if there's no method, then ALL beginner art learning resources and institutions are worthless.

Just draw, you will get better eventually even if its bit by bit...
