Southerners are proud of their states, New England people care more about the idea of New England than their state, Midwesterners don't care about their states, Californians have their state identity revolve around not being chuds but beyond that they don't have a particularly strong state identity, Texans though do the most, Floridans don't because they're all northern migrants and Cubans so Florida is just a place, and all other flyovers in the West have no identity.

Even the average local government is more competent than the average state level government in the US, someone needs to put states rights out of its misery and give that power to local government while all big infrastructure is headed by people who actually know what they're doing.
