There are thousands of words you know but you can't recall. Nobody in English says "ponder" or "mull over", you only see these words in novels. The same goes for any other language, this is why learning Japanese gets easier if you already have a strong vocabulary basis. You only need to use like 1/4 of your overall vocabulary to communicate.

yeah?

>Nobody in English says "ponder" or "mull over"
thank you for deciding what people say from your base in italy, captain english.

Let me pontificate on this conundrum.

I started learning English seriously when I was 11 and now I'm 27 and I work as an English tutor. I can tell which words are high-frequency.

You're ESL teaching ESLs talk to other ESLs using 25 cent words the bar isn't very high

I mogged native speakers during my CELTA course while watching them struggle with grammar and phonetics. EFL privilege is a castle built on lies.

I'm an English tutor and I can say with certainty that, yes, people do say those "rare words" you believe are only said in novels.
Sometimes with a bit of a humorous emphasis, acknowledging that they're kind of funny to say.

>yes, people do say those "rare words" you believe are only said in novels.
I never heard someone saying mull over in movies, tv series, real life or voice chat.
>acknowledging that they're kind of funny to say.
that's precisely why they use them, they sound awkward in real life where the vast majority of people just use "think"

>Nobody in English says "ponder"
I do
>or "mull over"
I do

sorry esl

Did a corpus search and you're insanely wrong. Fag

Your limited observations are not conducive to any valuable claim. Fag.

I say those

Philosophic terms are more likely to fit your description of words people vaguely know, but never use. Ersatz, ablution, eudaimonia, gestalt, jouissance, dissimulation, tautology, and fugue to name a few. All of these convey a specific meaning. If you're talking about more obscure synonyms for common meaning people will understand words like miser, but it's not communicating anything novel than if you had chose to use a word like thrifty or cheapskate.
