The British Empire succeeded because they never actually ruled anything beyond Great Britain proper. All the colonies were governed by the local aristocrats or by private companies that ruled as they pleased, for which they only had to pay taxes and recruit soldiers in return.

They educated mostly the upper class to be administrators, diplomats and the like (you can still see this today that the Brits have a very distinct working class compared to the countries other side of the pond) Another thing is the first industrial revolution was about textiles and iron mostly. During the second industrial revolution (modern chemical industry, optics, steel, electrical engineering, etc.) the German Empire easily leapfrogged the Brits. By early 20th century Germans were producing more steel than France and the Brits combined and by the mid 20th century they had the technological advantage in basically everything
