Why weren't they able to build an empire like France, Spain or Britain?
>>221884322too big
>>221884322They were locked in the med at a time when access to the atlantic built empires. Same reason their once powerful trading cities declined
not a unified nation until too late, bad geography for empires at the time (bordered by great powers), lack of industry
>>221884322who gives af about an building empire, look at spain and portugal, their languages have been tainted by sudamerican thirdies
They had Rome. Everybody was already their bitch

>>221884322same as Germany, Italy was fragmented into small states all affiliated or colonized by other european powers until the 1860s, so the period which was the scramble for Africa or the conquest of trading posts across Asia for others was spent progressively trading or conquering little pieces of land from whoever took them. Also our only natural defense is the alps, we're completely open on the coast so before a unified defense it was very easy to sail off from another mediterranean country and take a piece of land.
After Rome, Italy took a thousand year breather, bucked back up in the Renaissance and now they're just chilling. They've already achieved an unending glory, they ain't gotta do shit else ever. Same as Greece. It's funny all these former Roman colonies and bastard children of former colonies talking shit about their Italy, like their entire language wouldn't even exist without them, so lower your tone.
>>221884322>theyItaly wasn't a country. And none of the rich states that composed it had any incentive to try and conquer lands on the other side of the world, plus it's not like they could have left the Mediterranean anyway since the kingdom of Spain controlled the only way out.
>>221884322"italy" is the colonial empire of piedmont
>>221885621"your grandmother's rectum" is the colonial empire of my sperm
>>221884322Had Italy united earlier, it surely would have. The great colonial empires had their roots in the 16th and 17th centuries, and anyone following on from that had a lot of catching up to do (particularly by the mid 19th century when Italy finally unified).
