What the fuck is the metric being used here. Define what makes a person notable, what's the threshold

"We collect a massive amount of data from various editions of Wikipedia and Wikidata".

Just yesterday I was reading an article about the Spanish chemist Avelino Corma. This good man, with a ridiculously small budget more typical of a banana republic, is responsible for single-handedly discovering and developing one-fifth of all stable synthetic zeolites used worldwide. Considering that catalytic processes support approximately 30% of global GDP, for a single scientist to be responsible for such a percentage of molecular tools is an unprecedented milestone in the history of modern chemistry.

Ignorance is bliss...

liechtenstein is too small to see but it would be the darkest possible green (1,000,000 notable people per 1,000,000 in 1850) just fyi
>>
>>221885180
How many of these notable people are Jews thoug
>>
>>221889182
A Polish chemist Łukaszewicz pioneered modern industry. He created the process of getting a kerosene from gasoil, made first gas lamp in world (in Jasło afaik), constructed first morder oil well. Southeastern Poland used to filled with oil mines in 1850s and 1860, now it's gone (we're out of oil). Meanwhile whole countries base their economy on oil, war are fought over it and blockating a small portion of oil transport might cause, in next couple of years, a whole fucking global crisis.

At the time he lived Poland was not independant and Galicia (where he worked) was poor ass fucking periphery province of Austro-Hungary.

pretty sure some german chemist invented modern fertilizer which is the reason population could go past ~1B or something like that
chemistry is full of these oneshot quantum leap inventions

Russia has a huge number of notable people, but it is still in the red like Albania. Kekkk. What a meme map.
>>
>>221892339
I've aware of Euler

I've also aware of Rousseau, Jung and Le Corbusier; but that isn't 10 people right?

Yet I'm pretty sure I can name 10 people just in the provinces of Ile-de-France and Tuscany
>>
>>221893318
euler is worth 10 average "notable" people easily
he's in a god tier with maybe a dozen other people
>>
>>221893332
You overestimate his impact too much... He is certainly top 3 mathematicians of all time, but for Switzerland to be as high as it is in this map just because of him is idiotic. There is less famous people who changed the world much more than Euler with his multiple publications like the previously mentioned fertilizer developer

This map is bullshit

Per million inhabitants... It doesn't refer to absolute numbers. Anyway, the map is rubbish.

What the Portuguese invented was mercantilism. It, and its successor, capitalism, ruined the world forever. Politics, wars, anything became a soulless, endless search for profit, and profit only. All nations moral imperative became solely to fill the pockets of a small elite, which then use their amassed wealth to control nations to do their bidding. Fuck you very much for inventing this shit.
