>>221895217From what I understand their government was split into military factions, one of which put the emperor under house arrest (IJA), one that was about to become a neo-shogunate (IJN) and another that was completely privatized basically East India Company, Japan (Kwantung). They had a literal oligarchy that died out in 1940 and there was a massive push to expand because they hated their island with a passion, so much so that Manchuria was more developed than it. They wanted to make a discount version of the Soviet Union by violently forcing virtually all of Asia into their economic union (including India) and even tried making Israel in Shanghai. I know this is a controversial take here, but I can't imagine anyone liking this government. It's like if you had a more unhinged version of 1870s Prussia that wanted to copy the USSR.
