Dudes didn't even have writing. They had a period of a primitive script in a small part of the Indus valley, then they just dropped writing for over a thousand years and didn't start writing until around Alexander and Ashoka. They basically had an impressively early start, but it went to shit fast and then they just rejoined civilization at 300 BC or so which also went to shit for a while, then it got better around 300 AD and went to shit fast, etc. etc. Compared to Mesopotamia, Egypt and China, they don't come off as very impressive.
