>>221901876modern Croatian borders are drawn along the ethnic lines mostlyand no, Italians almost did not live in Dalmatia. The Romance speakers there did not identify as Italians and they'd actually often wage wars against other Romance people. Calling Dalmatians "Italians" makes as much sense as calling Croats "Bulgarians"btw, there were (and partially still are) Slavic settlements even around Venice
>>221901840>>221901876Casual autism is simply giving Dalmatia to ItalyMore advanced autism would be having Dalmatia as separate Romance nation orReducing Croatia to Dalmatia and Istria only.
Croatia is one of the interesting nations in Europe in the sense how 3 completely different people in terms of their dialect (basically speaking separate languages), culture, history, behavior, lifestyle etc. etc still strongly insist that they are one nation that should live in one country. I mean, I'm obviously not against it, if it's their will. It's just interesting. Because technically speaking, a Shtokavian Croat from Slavonia is culturally closer to a Serb or a Hungarian than he is to a Chakavian Croat from Krk. And a Kajkavian Croat from Kumrovec is culturally closer to a German than he is to a person from Dubrovnik.

>>221902217Dalmatians told Slave(e)s to speak Italian/Dalmatian or get out.>In the Republic of Ragusa, official business was conducted in Ragusan until approximately the end of the 15th century. In 1472 the Senate banned the use (without permission) of "Slavic" or "any language other than Ragusan or Italian" for conducting legal disputes. Another piece of evidence is a letter by Elio Lampridio Cerva (1463–1520) that mentions "I remember how, when I was a boy, old men would carry on legal business in the Romance language that was called Ragusan".[8]
>>221904743well, if they had to ban it it means that it was so common so they were afraid of it taking the city over
>>221901784the opposite, savoie is the only region worth conquering together with corsica, balkanshits can keep their shitholes
>>221902217it's even stupider when you consider other "croat" groups that don't even speak any of those dialectsfor example, banat croats in romania (krašovani) speak torlakian, a dialect spoken in the far south of serbia, and parts of kosovo, fyrom and bulgaria.at some point you just have to conclude that croat historically just meant catholic serb.
>>221904743Even in Croatia itself, Latin was the official language until the mid-19th century. Foreign cartographers list Dubrovnik as a Croatian city, and the Dubrovnik aristocrats themselves wrote poetry in Croatian at that time.
>>221905705Retard detected. Croats speak 3 dialects that are not at all different from each other. What is different and what we do not understand in each other are non-Croatian words. Northern Croatia is full of Germanisms, the coastal area has a lot of Italianisms, and Croats from Bosnia use a lot of Turkishisms. And then it is logical that a Croat from the north does not (fully) understand a Croat from the south, because a northerner has no contact with Italianisms. Croatian writers have always called their language Croatian, regardless of which dialect they wrote in. Croats in Serbia or Romania have assimilated linguistically, they no longer speak the language they spoke 400 years ago. What Croatia went through and survived is impossible: Croats lived divided into 4 states, they spoke 3 dialects, literally all their neighbors tried to destroy them by imposing their language. We were destined to disappear. The Scots and Irish failed to preserve their language even though they only had the English against them. The Croats had Italians, Germans, Turks, Hungarians and finally Serbs against them - all of them tried to impose their language on the Croats and not only none of them succeed, but none of them live in Croatia anymore because we destroyed them. The Croats are an unstoppable force of nature.

>>221908703Wrong. About 100-120 years ago, there were about 100-150,000 Germans living in Croatia. The number of Italians in Dalmatia was about 30k, but there were a lot of them in Istria (maybe 100k). There were about 80k Hungarians in Croatia. The Turks did not live here, but part of the population converted to Islam, about 50% of the population of Slavonia. They were all deported to Bosnia when Slavonia was liberated at the end of the 17th century.
>>221909789It doesn't matter at all whether it's bait or not. Imagine if I call you a pedophile and you don't react because 'it's bait'. And then you wonder why everyone is calling you a pedophile/thinking you're a pedophile. That's how it works. A lie repeated 1000 times becomes the truth.

We've been having this thread for almost 15 years. Before the war, there was some legitimate claim over some towns here and there on the balkan coast, and with some balancing (moving around some hundred thousand yugos from majority italian towns and vice-versa) an equilibrium where we kept some more of the coast would have made sense. These days there's really no reason to, with the purge of italians post ww2 there's not much left of it other than the architecture. They are a funny thing to look at tho, like estonians cosplaying as phoenicians> I äm Vladimir Vladimirovich, I ljive in mjay tjypichol sztone howse on the cohst ov our bjyutchiful medjicherrenyansaid with a face of a person who descends from 5000 straight years of tuber-only subsistance

>>221912131I don't know why it's hard for you Italians to understand that Croats learned to build stone palaces, and that Croatian aristocrats lived in those stone palaces. Many of those patrician families have survived to this day. I don't understand why you underestimate us. I guess it's some kind of reflex from the era of fascist dehumanization of Croats. It wasn't like that throughout the Middle Ages, numerous Croatian philosophers, priests and artists worked in Italy.
>>221905722Dubronik/Ragusa language system was completely fucked up. By the late 15th pretty much all women and kids spoke croat, but most of the civilized adult men consider it a subhuman "illyrian barbarian" language, so they often used among themselves and for official document Italian and latin. They also usually "italianized" their very croatian names (like this Sabo Bobaljević dude that signed himself as "Savino de Bobali")https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savino_BobaliIts only from the 16th onwards that ragusan men started also writing in croatian, mostly plays and poems that were supposed to be spoken and not to be read anyway
>>221902084>modern Croatian borders are drawn along the ethnic lines mostlyIf that's true they weren't drawn very well. There are large Croatian minorities in Bosnia and Serbia, no?
>>221912670Oh I'm not giving a negative meaning to stone houses, dont get me wrong. >>221912727Some of the nobility in Dubrovnik were Latins who later assimilated into Croats, as well as a few immigrant families from Italy, but at least 50% of the nobility were ethnic Croats. In Split or Zadar and on the islands, the patrician families were almost 100% Croatian with the exception of a few Italian families who were also immigrants from various parts of Italy. Al Idrisi calls Dubrovnik 'the last city in Croatia', and he lived in the 12th century.

>>221902217>3 completely different people in terms of their dialect (basically speaking separate languages)That's not exactly how Croatian dialects work because for example some people will claim or classify the modern Zagreb way of speaking as "kajkavian" when it's just Sthokavian with a slightly different vocabulary compared to other Croatian Sthokavian variants. And you can't generalize Kajkavian, Chakavian and Sthokavian, they are dialect groups, not individual dialects. Although I'll admit Stokavian has way less variety compared to the other two considering the large area it's spoken in.>still strongly insist that they are one nation that should live in one country.Well most of the old core Croatia spoke Chakavian from East Istria through Lika and into parts of Bosnia down to southern Dalmatia. Minus the parts that became Bosnia that is all still Croatia. It's good that at least some people in certain conquered areas down south still identified as Croats. Giving up your land just like that would be foolish and we would quickly get conquered by different countries with that attitude, every nation would. It's almost like saying Poland should stay divided between Germany and Russia because of slightly different cultural aspects still seen today like party voting preferences that follow the former border.
