Fishing with a mate at the local canal the other week, I nearly slipped in. He said I was lucky because loads of people drown in canals despite them often only being ~3-4 ft deep. I said at 6ft tall I'd just stand up.

He argued the silt at the bottom is so slippery/deep you can't get traction to stand, which is supposedly why drownings happen. He linked these:

Police said the water was only "chest deep" but the "thick sludge" could cause people to "slip and fall in.”

And this:

Police said the canal was "about chest-deep” but “the silt was very deep" and a person who fell in would "slip and be unable to stand up."

Is that actually plausible, or exaggerated?

What's your deal? Are you retarded?
>>
Maybe the bottom is like quicksand so your legs sink down
So it's like you're half as tall and stuck and can't move
Eh? Eh?
Someone should jump in and test

Kind of person you see walking around talking to himself in public
And if you make eye contact he comes up to you and starts talking about "Did you know people drown in canals? They're only 3 feet deep but they still drown."
And you walk away and you're like "what the fuck was that?" And he's already talking to himself about canals again as he continues down the street

Why not just swim/float? Also are you the same guy who keeps posting about girls drowning in canals alot recently?

Imagine there is a britbong serial pusher that pushes girls into canals and then brags about it on /int/

Seen this being spammed whole week or two now and I think I wanna add 1 of my anecdote. My experience in a river in my country was, the top silt can be slippery and when you first put weight on them, you can actually slide for a distance before more weight get you break past the slippery slit and into goey clay which will continue swallowing your leg and if youre unlucky , at an angle. When youre in this goey clay part, your leg will be water/air tight from the goey clay quickly filling any space and you'll feel like something is actually dragging you under. The hold is really tight and when youre at an angle + panic due to your leg pretty much frozen but youre still somehow getting swallowed, its pretty grim. You gotta be lucky too to get swallowed straight down (or you have a hold straight above your head AND getting lowered slowly) as like I mentioned before the layers are not uniformed and you will slid in at an angle.
