I'm unfamiliar with the portuguese case, but in the spanish case, it was due to the fact that they encountered organized indigenous societies that controlled different territories, maintained trade routes, knew the terrain, already had institutions, and held power over various groups.Therefore, as a strategy to establish themselves in the territory, the Spanish had to forge alliances with the different indigenous leaders and nobility, which in many cases led to marriages in order to establish or acquire something similar to the medieval fiefdoms called encomiendas in America. These were the first colonial enterprises to emerge in the 16th century and are the forerunners of the haciendas.
