Do they think hundreds or thousands of years of rich art and academic history and wisdom is inferior to kawaii anime lolis and isekai slop? Or do they still admire their own cultural values? Do they look like fat neckbeards or based chads?

It's not about culture, it's about posturing. I know weebs who bitch about western art, I showed them a side-by-side of some Argie anime styled VN and Jojo and he said he preferred the 'real' Japanese art style. I told him it was made by spics and he went off about how depraved western society is. You can find 10/10 anime art that fits all their weeb criteria, they only like it if they think it's Japanese like how some women freak out if they find out their gucci bag is a knock off.

lots of non-Japanese weeb shit being successful these days though

When does irony become truth?

I feel like the opposite is true. kind of.
these days, if someone says any good thing about anything in Japan or any Japanese, some people will always claim ''you are praising it only because it's Japanese'', you know.
''thing, Japan'' meme is just that. it's pretty fucked up.

After gamergate pretty much every gamer regardless if they're a weeb has similar reactions to what I describe. Outside of niche subculture things my entire interaction with Japan has either been Chris Broad, who is pretty neutral on the subject, or clips of women talking about how much they love Japan. I have never once experienced thing, Japan in great volume, even on /int/. In fact the most common reaction to thing, Japan I've seen as of late is something like "heh they only say thing, Japan because it's actually better". There are so many of these Callistoroll-esque Japanese shilling channels on twitter it's crazy, the guy isn't even Japanese to boot.
>>
>>221917406
That's every zoomer weeb nowadays
Also if you haven't realized europeans have been mindbroken into hating their own heritage

I think ''thing, Japan'' is too normalized for 4chan's taste. Now it's reddit. That doesn't mean it's gone.
>>
>>221918749
idk I don't browse there, but this has entirely been my experience. Even people who don't care about anime at all like Asmongold will open a stream then bitch about how horrible the dubs of some anime he doesn't care about are to pander to his audience. And it's not new either I remember when Metokur used to do this stuff too where people would pay him just to recommend manga at him and all the guy did was talk about how much he hates trannies. So I don't know when thing, Japan went mainstream, and if it did I completely missed it due to not using Reddit, but I was here on /int/ when it was made.

Anyway, I think it's quite ridiculous for westerners to think like Japan is getting special treatment while the west is by far the dominant power in world's media.
The only reason they think Japan gets special treatment is because Japan is ''foreign'' for them but from the non-western perspective the west is ''foreign'' and they are much bigger than Japan. Not even close.
>>
>>221919127
funny enough when people think of “western” entertainment (movies, tv, cartoons, comics, music), they strictly think of anglo entertainment

nobody cares about what continental europeans release, and even europeans anglicize their media (eg. singing in english rather than their native languge)

anglos + japanese dominated the world
>>
>>221921590
I haven't seen much in the way of people talking about western media. It really is mostly anime+kpop for zoomers, like what relevant stuff have Anglos put out since Hong Kong action movies? Most of Hollywood's dominance ended after the 90s too, everyone's favorite movie is still shit like Fight Club. I can't look at that movie without feeling visceral nostalgia then remembering it was made almost 30 years ago.

how do the more schizo weebs reconcile their loathing for westoids/gaijins while being the very thing they're always seething about? do they consider themselves an exception to the rule or do they just not think about?

korean media is probably unironically bigger than japanese at this point even though they were influenced by japan a lot

I guess it's not that hard. There were so many Japanese jazz fans thinking basically only african americans can make real jazz.

korean pop culture is just anglo/japanese copycat

If he learned Japanese just for ironic shitposting that's dedication. At some point weebs need to accept that they've entered Poe's Law territory. There are people who make completely serious 30+ minute videos about how bad CalArts is (it's always CalArts) and why pixiv is superior to anything western art has ever accomplished ostensibly because CalArts exists.
>>

I find it kinda disturbing how that kind of rivalry only exists outside of Japan.
Japs are too busy fighting with credit card companies and prude anglosaxon feminist groups behind them and such just to defend themselves
>>
>>221924258
I wouldn't take it too seriously, go on /v/ and you'll likely find these types of media disputes easily. It's the same Japan went through with hallyu and Korean media, if you remember that. It's political bullshit masquerading as an aesthetics argument.
>>
>>221924333
>It's the same Japan went through with hallyu and Korean media, if you remember that. It's political bullshit masquerading as an aesthetics argument.
Eh I don't think what Japan went through with hallyu and Korean media was similar, because basically Korean things were never so foreign for the Japanese. It's not like specific Korean dramas were bashed in Japan.
One of Japan’s major TV networks, which holds special legal status, was buying Korean dramas on the cheap and airing them a lot and theTV network itself was the biggest target for those right-wingers who hated Korea at that time. It's true that it was politically motivated bullshit, though.
>>
>>221924520
>right-wingers who hated Korea at that time
Replace 'Korea' in this sentiment with Disney and you're spot on. Also instead of the foreign national bashing they bash media that they think was bought out by Soros or some other leftist finance boogeyman, that's about the only difference.
